I’ve just checked the tee off times  and skys coverage
6pm – 3am on all four days, some late nights ahead for me

I know mate, I was surprised at this also; I can’t remember it being this late ten years ago. Somehow, California appears to have lost three or four hours on the world clock; we are now 8 hours in front of them :D

Credit to the front two, even the third perhaps, but barring these three this race has to go down as the race of non-stayers.

The field were seperated by seven or eight lengths with six furlongs to run; at the line they were seperated by two furlongs

Well done to everyone who backed the winner – from Novice Hurdling to the Ascot Gold Cup, quite an achievement.

    And u matey.

That 4/1 about Rhys is a massive price, I’d like
to see him go instead of someone like Sergio.

Yes it’s massive now because he is best priced 4/9 or thereabouts I think. I place the bet in February.

Unless Sergio’s form picks up considerably in the next two months then I don’t see how he can possible make the team. He won’t get in automatically, and if Monty makes him one of his picks then he needs his head testing. I’ve never seen Sergio play so poorly, he is all over the place. Shame really.

Matthew, they hold US Open qualification heats in this country, as they do in the US for our Open.

The day after the BMW PGA Championship (about a month ago now) Rhys Davies qualified by finishing in the first five at Walton Heath (they play 36 holes in one day). The winner of the BMW, Simon Khan, failed to qualify but was made first reserve and fortunately for him someone pulled so he has also made the field.

Thankfully for Rhys he is now in the world’s top 50 (official world rankings) and as long as he stays there he will never have to pre-qualify for a major or World Golf Championship again. I can’t see him dropping out of the top 50 in the near future, in fact I can only see him climbing higher.

Like you say, he is a fantastic putter, I’d go as saying sensational in fact, the best I’ve seen for a long time.

I’ve backed Rhys at 4/1 to make the Ryder Cup team so no matter where he plays I’m always supporting him. I just hope he continues to play well to either get in the side automatically, or impress Monty enough to get a pick.

Good luck with your selection this week.

So if there’s any trainers out there that have a stable full of horses that like it ‘rattling’ hard, or ‘like a road’ (as it’s often described), then they may as well pack the job up.

Get a few greyhounds instead, it’s much cheaper :D

    Goodnight.

Gingertipster I don’t think anyone is disputing the harder the ground the more dangerous it becomes, what I (and I think BB) is saying is that the ground hasn’t reached anywhere near hard yet and therefore there is no need to water, especially with showers forecast for Friday. No water was put onto the course during Wednesday, yet at 6pm the description was Good to Firm, Good in place. I can’t see how that is going to change to ‘road-like’ hard ground overnight.

I completely agree with BB here.

The ground description on Wednesday was Good – Good to Firm in places but was later changed to Good to Firm – Good in places.

We have seven different going descriptions in Britain, the two ‘hardest’ being Hard and Firm. So why do Ascot need to water when the official going at the end of play on Wednesday was Good to Firm – Good in places. Surely the next description for the ground, assuming another dry 24 hours, is going to be Firm at worst. This is an official going description of horseracing – so why aren’t horses being allowed to run on it?

I’m all for horse safety, but surely it’s the responsibility of racehorse trainers to know whether they have a thorughbread that will act on the described ground, and if they don’t then don’t run the said horses.

Horses pull up lame on every going description out there, not just fast ground. A possible reason for coming back lame is the ground being unsuitable, whether it be heavy, soft, hard, firm etc. So for me it’s down to the trainer being responsible for knowing what his horse acts on.

The two reasons Ascot are watering ahead of tomorrow are 1) the Clerk of the Course has told trainers the ground will be no worse than Good to Firm all week, and 2) a few (relatively new) track records were broken today and panic has set in.

What the Clerk of the Course should have said is that the ground is Good – Good to Firm in places today, but if the dry weather continues we could be racing on Good to Firm or even Firm ground by the end of the week. Trainers then know exactly where they stand.

According to BBC Weather Forecast (for the Berkshire area) a few showers are on the cards for Friday.

Fingers crossed then that we don’t get an Ascot watering, more rain than expected, Good To Firm turns into Good To Soft, 28 Non-Runners scenario.

Or is that a bit far fetched? :D

I generally like to take a look at those that did well in the corresponding tournament the previous year … quite often players will come back that have played the course well before and repeat their form.

But they haven’t played this course for ten years now :D

They play another event (the AT&T National Pro Am) at Pebble Beach yearly, but the course is set up in a completely different way to how it will be set up for this week’s US Open, and as I say, the US Open hasn’t been staged here for ten years now.

The last time it was staged here Tiger won by 15 shots, but even though he has this course down as one of his favourites I simply couldn’t back him given his form (and personal problems) this season.

I’m taking on Tiger and Phil which then makes the event wide open. I hope Westwood wins but at the odds he’s too short for me. So my money is on Graeme McDowell, Bo Van Pelt and Steven Ames. All three are just hunch calls really, though I’d also love Rhys Davies to do well as he is a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend and I’ve said hello to him a few times :D

It wasn’t Henry who made her ante-post jolly for the Oaks.

But he did continuously say that she was his main Oaks hope… didn’t he? Or if he didn’t say it, all the vibes over the winter certainly led the public to believe this was the case.

As I’m sure you know, bookmakers don’t generally price ante-post races like the Oaks and Derby up on form alone, and most market moves in the months leading up are because of ‘vibes’. I think it’s no secret that Cecil thought Timepiece was his Oaks horse, so as UM says, it looks like he got this one wrong.

I think it had something to do with ATR/Worcester Racecourse and nothing to do with the BHA.

Both Ascot and Worcester were being shown live on ATR so if the races went off together they would have had to go split screen, so Worcester (to the benefit of themselves and ATR no doubt) held their race back until Ascot had finished.

The 5:50 at Hamilton was shown on RUK, and with all due respect to that channel, both ATR and Worcester probably didn’t give two hoots if their race clashed with that.

C’mon everyone – Matthew’s post was clearly light-hearted and not meant to be taken seriously.

And, in Paul Roy fashion, to put the record straight re-Armchair Jockey what I said to him (via pm btw) was…

We like to conduct the debates on TRF in a certain manner and that doesn’t include attacking other members of the forum

There is a clear difference between Matthew posting of frivolous topics (clearly driven by enthusiasm) and the type of cynical comments made by certain other members of the forum.

    Right – let’s move on.

Spot on. People accused the original poster of being juvenile when he was clearly being lighthearted, but the only juvenile aspect of this thread is people complaining that Mahttew spelt a person’s name wrong. Is this really what get’s up people’s noses, if it is, I’ll get my coat.

(sorry, that should be matthew :D )

Would it kill you to at least check the spelling on your thread titles (however inane they may be) before you submit them, Matthew?

That’s slightly harsh CR. I’m new to this forum so don’t know how other people feel about spelling, and I certainly don’t want to go upsetting people. But as a kid I struggled with dyslexia and worked really hard to rectify my spelling. I’d hate to think that someone pointed out my spelling mistakes on this forum (and there will be some) when it’s clear that you know who or what I’m talking about.

A few people have already had a lighthearted dig at how Matthew has spelt Big Mac’s name, it’s clear he is talking about John McCririck, so is there really an issue here?

    David Probert:D

not a big enough name. No chance.

Of course he isn’t, which is a crying shame. I wasn’t suggesting he will get the Godolphin job, far from it, I was suggesting that if they wanted an upcoming jockey who is going to be a star of the future then he’s the man.

But like you say, these big stables (understandably) tend to go for proven jockeys with big reputations. Would love them for once to take a chance on someone like Probert, which is why my hat goes off to Gosden for taking a chance on Buick (in a very similar mould to Probert in terms of talent and potential).

I’m not just talking about Godolphin, I’m talking about any stable who wants a jockey that, is undoubtedly in my mind, going to be one of the greats of the sport over the next 20 years (barring injuries of course).

I’m talking about a jockey that shines every time he rides, someone that gets his horses running for him, gets them travelling on the bridle, always puts them in the right position and gives them every chance to win. I’m talking about a jockey that, for his age, is incredibly mature and kwoledgable, yet still willing to learn.

I’m talking about a jockey that has beautiful quiet hands, someone that walks the course every day before riding (so I’m told), and a jockey that is just an incredible horseman.

I’m talking of course about David Probert.

But other than that, I’m not a fan :D
