You’re right Andrew, it’s just today that has been ruined by bad officiating, not the World Cup as a whole. Nothing to do with England being one of the sufferers of course :D

I thought the commentator today touched on something very important. He was talking about Klose when saying that he’d had an awful season as club level but in a Germany shirt he is transformed.

How many players can we say that about when in an England shirt? NONE unfortunately.

How many of the Germans would get in the England team

All of them, because they played in positions familiar to what they play at club level, and thus operated as a team far better than England will ever be capable of if playing people out of position.

Agree, defence was dreadful today and Capello can’t be blamed for that.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being not good enough Andrew, remember, most of the time it’s the media that builds up the England team to be something that they’re not.

The buck, as in club football, should always stop with the manager. True, these England players were never good enough to win a competition of this magnitude, but they would have faired much better if Capello’s tactics were correct.

I simply can’t stop shaking my head at Capello’s insistance that Gerrard plays out wide. Name me another international manager in the world who would have played Gerrard wide left, or Wright-Phillips wide left (as he did against the USA)? Completely baffling.

In fact, name me another international manager in the world (apart from Sven) who wouldn’t have changed tactics or formations when 2-1 down and needing a goal to stay in the World Cup

Probably stay. Aside from the issue of Gerard on the left, everyone was saying pre tournament that he was the man for the job and on Wednesday night

    no-one was criticising his tactics

    .

Doubt if anyone else could do better with this bunch.

No-one was criticising his tactics Andrew, I’ve been saying since day one his tactics were all wrong. The man is a bufoon and needs to go immediately. The only problem is, the FA are even more bufoons and gave him a two year extension to his contract prior to the tournament starting

Wayne Rooney has just had the best season of his career… playing in a lone striker role. Steven Gerrard is one of the world’s best creative central midfielders.

If an England manager can’t build a team AROUND his best players then he shouldn’t be in the job. Instead, Capello sticks Gerrard out on the wing and plays Rooney in a two-pronged attack. Apart from 60 minutes against Slovenia, England have been absolutely awful using these tactics and formation. True, the players must take some responsibility but as I’ve said before, they weren’t given the chance to play to the best of their abilities because of the formation they were asked to play.

And yet again England has a manager that is incapable of changing things during a game. He did nothing against USA, nothing against Algeria, and today, when needing a goal, he changes Milner for Cole – a like for like change but no change of tactics and formation. And when we needed goals he takes of a proven goalscorer and replaces him with someone who now scores two or three goals a season

Yes I thought we’d win today but that’s because I think we have the ability to win every game. But I tell you what, England won’t even qualify for Euro 12 under this crank of a manager, not if he persists playing players out of position and a formation that doesn’t suit the players he has at hand. A lot of players appear to have lost faith/respect in him and I just can’t see how he can carry on.

Is Tempsford the Jonjo horse that won at Bangor last October? I’ve been looking out for him ever since, Thought perhaps he’d been injured or something.

Not injured as far as I’m aware

Sorry misread this completely hence the edit

Really feeling confident about England now, maybe it’s the sherberts but the more I think about it the more I fancy England.

Germany have been impressive so far (barring the Serbia game perhaps) but that’s their level, they can’t go higher. They have no Ballack or Schweinsteiger in midfield and that department now looks extremely weak in my opinion.

Ozil has been great, but he’s young and I think he will struggle on the day. Klose and Podolski are undoubtedly their biggest talents but I think Terry and Co will sniff out them quite easily. If K & P don’t score then who will for the Germans?

I’m rememberring Munich and 5-1, I’m rememberring 2-1 last time we played them. I think this will be quite easy to be honest, the Argies will be much tougher in the QF.

    Come on England.

Let’s see, in the English speaking world..

    UK… football
    Ire … SOCCER
    Aus …. SOCCER
    NZ …. SOCCER
    CAN … SOCCER
    South Africa … SOCCER
    USA … SOCCER

Seems like a "no brainer" to me, the English speaking world has decided that SOCCER is the preferred term. So I use Soccer…. or Fútbol with my Spanish speaking buddies.

Isn’t it ironic though, that the English gave the world the game of soccer, which would go on to be the most popular sport in the world, indeed it is the world’s game, yet all major English speaking former colonies have a different form of Football that is more popular.

Austrailia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa… ahh, the giants of WORLD SOCCER

    Let’s try again;

    Spain … Football
    Italy … Football
    France … Football
    Brazil … Football
    Argentina … Football
    England … Football
    Germany … Football
    Russia … Football
    Netherlands … Football
    Croatia … Football
    Slovenia … Football
    Uruguay … Football
    Chile … Football
    Ivory Coast … Football
    Mexico … Football

Sorry, I’m betting bored now :D

Ok, in their own language it isn’t literally FOOTBALL, but the English translation is FOOTBALL in probably 95% of the world’s nations that participate in this game.

It will be another tactical match and not a fiesta of brilliant

    soccer

(as ENG vs. SLV and GER vs. GHA had been). The team that will score the first goal in

    regular time or overtime

will have an advantage which is more worth than just a goal – remember the semi-final in 2006 with GER vs. ITY.

    Soccer = Football
    Regular = Normal
    Overtime = Extra Time

I wouldn’t have mentioned this, but as you want Germany to win I thought I’d better bring it up :D

    Good luck.

Don’t be hard on them guys. it’ll take time for them to get used to the proper terms AND not to have adverts interrupting play every 10 mins.

Believe me, nothing can be as bad as watching PGA Tour golf when Sky get the pictures from American TV

They show the leader tee-ing off, show an old clip of Arnold Palmer then go for a break.

They come back, show the leader’s approach shot, then re-wind a few minutes and show his playing partner’s shot (even though we know where the ball lands cos we saw it on the green when they showed the leader). They’ll then have a break.

They’ll come back from a break, show another clip of Palmer or Nicklaus, show the Accenta Shot of The Day, and then take another break. Then it’s back for another shot from the leader, a few pictures from the ocean, a picture frm the Met-Life Blimp, and before you know it someone has birdied four in a row to take the lead. So stuff the previous leader, we’ve seen two of his shots already, let’s go to the new leader… but only after a break of course.

I used to have a full head of hair when I started watching American golf… now I’m bald as a coot :D

It’s great that the USA are starting to embrace Soccer(Football) and are playing a big part in a truly

    WORLD

    sport.

I’d rather listen to a Brazilian sports reporter talk about how their

    attack

    played some brilliant

    football

    in

    extra-time

    to lift the

    World Cup

    .

Much better than an American reporter talking about how their

    offence

    played some brilliant

    soccer

    in

    over-time

    to life the

    prize

Obviously, they can win but I wouldn’t put a bet on it. There was much euphoria surrounding the Slovenia win

but was a 1-0 win against a very ordinary side really that brilliant?

Yes, it was better than the previous two performances but clearly that’s not saying a great deal.

In a tournament seemingly lacking outstanding sides thus far neither side looks a potential winner and a draw is probably the most likely outcome.

Where Germany’s 1-0 win over Ghana and 1-0 defeat to Serbia that brilliant?

At least England played much better against Slovenia. Yes they got tired/nerves played a part in the last 15 minutes but prior to that the played incredibly well and could have scored three or four quite easily on another day. It’s not always about the scoreline Stilvi.

I’ve voted for England as I think they can win. I wouldn’t have a bet on this game with free money however as it really is a difficult game to call. Germany have a few injury worries, especially with Schweinsteiger (or whatever his name is), and with Ballack not there they could be a bit short in midfield.

There’s no doubt England have the players and more experience, but will their nerve hold out? I hope so.

From the opening week Murray certainly looks stronger than Fed and Nadal, but I can’t help but feel that Murray needs a four or five setter also, if only to get his mental strength and concentration levels to a maximum.

You just know that when it comes to the quarters and semis Fed and Nad will grind their way through if they have too, whereas Murray is always likely to put in a poor performance. Like I say, it’ll be good for him if he puts in his poor performance today or in the next round but comes through it in four or five sets.

Good luck with your bet Matthew.

If England get knocked out, and USA progress, I think very few England supporters will support America.

Not that there’s anything wrong with the USA, but more down to the fact that we didn’t beat them in the opening game and that USA scored an injury time winner to deny England an easier passage in the competition (by virtue of being in the other side of the draw).

If England lose against Germany then the two/three teams I’ll be supoorting are Brazil/Holland from on half of the draw and Argentina from the other. Purely financial of course as I’ve backed a Holland/Argentina final at 33/1 and a Brazil/Argentina final at 22/1 :D

Are you skint Zippy lol? Same here mate.

And ooops, sorry about the tone of my message to you (note to self, never post when drunk).

Think it will be incredibly close between England and Germany and there’s not way in this world I’ll be betting on it. Going to sit in the house and have a few beers (it’s been rubbish in the pubs for the games so far) and watch the game with the wife. I’ll be a nervous wreck, but hopefully we can get through.

If we do get through though I’ve had a decent bet on a Argentina/Brazil and Argentina/Holland final pre-tournament so god knows how I will feel then with England playing the Argies in the QF.

    Good luck with your bets.
