Historically surely the Germans have the edge over the English.
The miss from the spot by Podolaski was the the first time they missed a spot kick in decades or something crazy like that.
Great Nation those Post War Germans. Always bring the A Game

Mentally, I think the balance of power has shifted in Englands favour.
On paper, there’s no comparison as to who the better eleven are right now. The Germans are are young side these days, and could well choke in the tunnel when they see the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney and co – at least I hope they will!
June 24, 2010 at 15:41 #302951Its which defense copes best will win the match.
The germans seem to fly forward from midfield this world cup and get men forward. If Jamie Carragher plays England will lose.

I thought we were magnificent and the last ditch tackles are included in that. It was always gonna be a high pressure game and we came through that. Like I said, it was uncomfortable towards the end because we didn’t get that all important 2nd goal and Slovenia were in the situation of having nothing to lose.
The failure to get the 2nd goal wasn’t through lack of effort or good football though. I thought we created at least 6-8 excellent goalscoring chances and had we taken one I think we would have strolled to victory and got more as the confidence grew. The fact we didn’t and ended up ‘hanging on’ a bit didn’t take anything away from the performance for me.
I also thought Lampard was neat and tidy for the most part, sure he gave the ball away a couple of times, but doesn’t everyone at times? He did a lot more good than bad for me and will be an absolute certain starter as he always has been for club and country under some of the best managers in the World! Surely your not questioning the judgement of such greats as Capello and Mourinho are you?
Bos….
There were critics who were saying we wouldn’t get past the group stage… they have been silenced.
Some of the same critics were saying Slovenia were a slick passing side and the toughest game in this group for us and that we would not beat them… they have been silenced.
There were critics who were laying into Capello for his selections and changes…. IMO all his changes and selections were justified and came off…so IMO they were silenced aswell.
We WILL beat Germany I’m certain of it!
If we fail to do so I will be back on here with egg all over my face, but will be back, that is for sure!
June 25, 2010 at 00:14 #303021Zamorston – Let me first stress that I am very much with you and England! I don’t want to come across as some doom monger who’s waiting for us to fall to the first decent side just so I can say "I told you so!".
I’ve seen many excellent performances against some poor sides, and much better sides than Slovenia over the years, as I’m sure you have too. Wednesday was much better – that’s all.
I do feel your standards have been lowered by our boys over the last week and a half, though, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the soul, at least!
‘Magificent’ one-off England performances roll off the tongue and the story told goal for goal: will you be reminiscing in twenty years time about a 1-0 victory over Slovenia that clinched 2nd place in a group that also contained Algeria and the U.S.A? The ‘magnificent’ performance that only had a handful of
good
performers on the day, with the rest adequate at best? Against Slovenia?
Regardless of the chances created, a 1-0 victory over Slovenia can never be called magnificent. I’m a proud Englishman and I wasn’t bursting with pride like I do when watching a magnificent England performance at a World Cup finals. The relief
was
magnificent!
I think we’ll beat Germany too, but what’d you call a 3-0 hammering of our foe? Would you find words to describe that?
June 25, 2010 at 00:47 #303023I don’t think I could mate.

I like to get carried away and am easily pleased! I liked the fact that we won a high pressure game and played some of the football we all know we’re capable of. I liked the fact that so many players had shown the heart and desire that has sometimes lacked and the fact that so many of them were out on their feet at the end.
If we can grow in confidence and win games and improve as we go on and actually end up winning the thing….then in 20 years time I can happily sit back with a cold beer and tell the Grandkids the ‘magnificent’ 1-0 victory over Slovenia was the turning point and the match and performance that set us on our way to glory.

A brace form Rooney and a Lampard screamer for a 3-0 hammering, you heard it here first!
June 25, 2010 at 09:26 #303047Football isn’t played on paper. And Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney & co hardly put the shits up the Yanks or Algeria or Slovenia, either in the tunnel or on the pitch so why you somehow think they will scare the Germans is beyond me.
And as for those of you who say that the critics who said that England wouldn’t get out of the group have been silenced, give me a break.
Yes they got out of the group. So what? They should have. And they should have as easily as Argentina or Holland did, if they are as good as everybody seems to think.

They draw with USA & Algeria and beat mighty Slovenia 1-0 and all of a sudden they are world-beaters, capable of going all the way.
Of the teams who have qualified for the Last 16, how many have England actually played better than? 2-3 maybe

Think we all know that England havent performed during the tourno so far and Germany wont be scared of England but believe you me they will be very wary. Take what the Sun says with a pinch of salt. Personally as ive said before, there isnt IMHO any stand out teams and tbh it looks pretty open to me anyway.
June 25, 2010 at 23:01 #303141Oh come on you ridiculously rose-tinted specs wearing Engeerrrland fans!
England beat Slovenia 1-0 – wow

They did play better, admittedly, but was
that really a performance of a team capable of going any further
?
Yes, they could beat Germany
but I think we are in serious trouble now. Ghana were more impressive in defeat than Slovenlyia.
The Germans have looked far better than us throughout the tournament. They have a far better flow to their game, can pass quicker and more accurately (please note) and they have far more depth in their squad.
Of course I
want
England to win, but if I were betting on the game then 9/5 Germany opposed to 13/10 Eng (Hills) is a steal.
Good luck to those that have backed Eng to win the tourney (as my mate has also done), but I think you’re in dreamland. I may join you, I’m an awful sleeper.

I’m a stickler for pointing out faults, but in one sentence you’ve said "was that really a performance of a team capable of going further?
And in your very next sentence you’ve said "Yes, they could beat Germany".
And in your next sentence you’ve said "but if I were betting on the game then 9/5 Germany opposed to 13/10 Eng (Hills) is a steal."
So please clarify… who are you supporting? Who have you backed? Or are you one of these people who say, "told you so" no matter who wins.
From what you’ve said you appear to think the Germans will win, but England can win, but Germany can win, but England can win also. For FFFF sake mate, who do you think will win?
Do you think we’ll beat the Germans or not? For the record, I Think we’ll beat them easily
OneEye – I think it could be close and either side could progress. However, I feel Germany are stronger – they are quicker, pass and retain the ball better and have enough quality forwards to fatally penetrate our defense.
Germany also look to have more energy in the tank, not to be confused with passion (which both teams have in spades).
I’d back Germany at 15/8 if I had some spare wagering wonga.

June 26, 2010 at 00:56 #303148Are you skint Zippy lol? Same here mate.
And ooops, sorry about the tone of my message to you (note to self, never post when drunk).
Think it will be incredibly close between England and Germany and there’s not way in this world I’ll be betting on it. Going to sit in the house and have a few beers (it’s been rubbish in the pubs for the games so far) and watch the game with the wife. I’ll be a nervous wreck, but hopefully we can get through.
If we do get through though I’ve had a decent bet on a Argentina/Brazil and Argentina/Holland final pre-tournament so god knows how I will feel then with England playing the Argies in the QF.
Good luck with your bets.
June 26, 2010 at 22:24 #303289Sadly, I too remain skint, OneEye *sob*

Still, like you and many forumites I shall be safely ensconced at home with the TV blaring AND the radio. Most peeps don’t like listening to both at the same time – but I do

I REALLY hope we can win…but I honestly feel Germany have played the superior footy so far. Do England have another level? We’ll see…
Enjoy all!

Ps,
Don’t worry about your tone, buddy. It’s good when peeps are passionate on here. Posters are only torn apart if they spout untenable dribble. (which I never do
