I have always liked Clare and her knowledge of horses and racing. However, today I really think she was over-the-top sycophantic about the ‘royal’ runner. Neither she nor Carson gave any credit to the excellent runs of the second and the fourth – Coolmore was always on a hiding to be a spoiler here it seems.

Nobody outside racing enthusiasts really gives a hoot about who wins the Derby, except those there on the day wanting a moment to remember. (And they can remember the day the Queen’s horse lost as well as the day he might have won.) All the rest was hype, hype, hype.

What really annoyed me as much, however, was Clare giving the Oaks winner’s name as Rain Dance initially. (In a second mention later on she said Dancing Rain, but never apologised for her initial mistake – shocking, especially because she’s always correcting Carson in these matters.)

Thought it was sad that Ryan Moore was so upset by the result. I’ve never seen him so close to tears – what’s the story there – did the hype get to sensible Ryan as well? He couldn’t possibly think he was on the best horse, could he?

Please tell me I’m not alone in thinking the best filly won the race. Yes, Murtagh’s ride was judged perfectly, but she still wouldn’t have won if she hadn’t been good enough. I think this will be borne out in the rest of the season.

Dettori’s ride was a bit of a shocker, but I do not in any way think BB would have won. WOW I think will go to and win (barring Dancing Rain’s participation) the Irish Oaks, and then she would be a good candidate for the St. Leger – she seems to need a minimum of 12f and would possibly benefit from farther.

You’ve got to love Misty For Me. I think 10f will be her game, and she could still pick up another G1 or two if her exertions thus far haven’t taken too much out of her.

If things go according to what we’ve heard about the current Ballydoyle plan, St. Nick runs in the Coronation and Await the Dawn runs in the Hardwicke. They have multiple entries so they can juggle things if plan A doesn’t pan out.

FWIW I think both those horses will be hard to beat. Midday a very feisty lady though.

I don’t think he’ll get past Await The Dawn there, but the Princess of Wales will be a good spot for him.

What does everyone think about the Gold Cup – is it a match between last year’s winner and the classy but unknown distance-wise Fame and Glory? Am I missing something? Perhaps the Saval Beg will spring a surprise??? Does Theology have a chance for Noseda??

Should Misty go to France I think she’d be running for third after Golden Lilac and Galikova (I’m not sure which order between those two). Don’t think she’d fare better at Epsom either. Wouldn’t she be better served by going for the Pretty Polly – does anyone know the date of that this year? That’s the race that I think would suit her. I like little Misty but think 10f is plenty far enough.

Thanks, Z. I’d hoped that information would be more readily available – which to be fair it probably is to those in the bloodstock and breeding industry.

Thanks, Zarkava. Seems a bit odd – SF had three runs prior to the Princess of Wales last year. Either their main target is the Melbourne Cup and they are looking at only a few races to try and get a nice-ish weight, or something is wrong. SF is somewhat fragile I think, and has missed some of Noseda’s older horse gallops. Or is JN being ridiculously secretive on his website?

Pity, I think he could have been very competitive in the Gold Cup. Like Fallon said about Yeats in his first GC, if Fame and Glory stays, he wins. Only my opinion of course!

On a completely different topic, Zarkava, can you tell me where on the Weatherby’s website you can access the stallion information (runners to winners, runners to stakes winners, etc)that you’ve mentioned on another thread. I couldn’t find it – though maybe it was staring me in the face!!

    Thanks in advance.

Help – what does this mean? Are they both likely non-runners in the Gold Cup or are they going to Ascot without a prior run (which does seem odd)? Please Sans Frontieres have a go!

Best of all perhaps is the French filly Galikova, a G3 winner heading for the French Oaks as the likely favourite. Oh, yes, almost forgot, she’s a half sister to Goldikova!

I thought Zain’s performance was just as impressive as Wonder of Wonders. She seemed to zoom away, although the second and third looked short on stamina.

BB,WOW,Zain and Havant. The race is beginning to look interesting. Can the Musidora bring anything on to challenge these four?

I think this result has everyone smiling. I know I’ve got a very broad grin. :D Hope she can go on for George.

Re RVW’s drift: Sporting Life and RP quote AOB saying he’s worried about RVW’s fitness first time up. Why didn’t he have a prep run in that case, or go for the slightly easier option of the POW? Curiouser and curiouser.

Curious and odd too that the Ballydoyle News section on the Coolmore website has not been updated since before the Derby, not even to list their runners. :? What gives?

Oops – just looked again at Sporting Life website. Quite a few updates from AOB there, so not so curious perhaps after all.

I’d love to see Rip win the Classic, but, even without his foot problem, I think it will be an uphill battle from his draw. Wonder if it will be Summer Bird and not Zenyatta taking the prize – SB’s price is too big, and I think he represents value.

With the heavy favourite in the Juvenile having the worst of the draw, I think this race is wide open and a real chance for a Euro to score at tasty odds – but which one?

One thing I am interested in is that O’Brien tends to send horses to the Guineas without a prep run; Steinbeck has only had two runs so far – will he know what is expected of him, or will he lose the race from inexperience?

I don’t think this will be a problem, Gerald. Footstepsinthesand went straight to the Guineas after two autumn runs as a 2yo.

Having experience of the Rowley Mile, something his sire did not have, is a plus for Steinbeck.
