The image of smoky betting shops and insider knowledge still haunts the industry and as the old generation of punter dies out they need to be replaced.

    Your words

the weighing of horses on-course pre-race

    My words

    Mutually inclusive words IMO

The sending of racehorses to the track in, shall we say, various states of fitness is one area where all but the most experienced horse-watchers – or those with "insider knowledge" – are denied the full facts and truth. And one that is easily rectified with either weighbridges at every course or by the use of portable weighbridges moved around the country a la starting stalls

Many (most?) trainers weigh their horses at home – why?

The more withheld quantifiable information that is divulged to the public the better: one day the old shady lady may be wholly stripped of her fustian burqa…one day

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment but isnt it just low grade races where the bulk of the plotting and shady activitites manifest? Surely as a punter you have the choice to avoid punting a monday AW meet or the 2:15 at Kelso? Indeed as a punter able to recognise the possibilities hitherto described cant you build the likelyhood into your tissue even?
The level of diligence to transparency within the sport will increase in line with the level of scrutiny that goes hand in hand with increased popularity and commercial interest. In other words chicken and egg. My belief is the sport needs to start by broadening its appeal in bite sized consumer sized nuggets of competition. The plethera of shite racing day in and day out is a struggle for the most passionate fan to wade through so using saturdays as a ‘premier league’ racing day will give us a start. Let the trainers keep the midweek racing to training programmes within the bigger narrative, avid punters can take them or leave them.
I agree with your suggestion Drone I just believe there’s a bigger picture to address first.

Quel Esprit beat American Job and Last Draw on the bridle by 4 lengths. I’m not convinced AJ looks a straightfoward ride either but GL with your EW, I’ll check the result later.

12.5 the win and 3.15 the place now on BF. Seems to be likely to settle around 14/1
Bear in mind the place odds are a guaranteed 3 places I believe, irrespective of withdrawals.

The Tote ditches its current operating model, and moves to an exchange model with an across the board 1% deduction/commission rate.

Long been an advocate of a Tote Exchange so in full agreement. Hardly given much thought to it but a flat 3% commish is the deduction that springs to mind – being both fair and undercutting that which the majority pay elsewhere

It’s been done to death on this forum by Glenn, Grasshopper, Robert99, myself and others but once again:

the weighing of horses on-course pre-race

So the weighing of horses pre race will have Joe Public watching in droves will it? Ive encountered a lot of this thinking and the key word here is CHANGE. Punters already indoctrinated in the sport will not be the ones to ask how to achieve this.

Perhaps this thread isnt focused on the attraction of new ‘consumers’ to the sport, I was thinking along those lines.

Hang on guys, surley it’s only the people already interested in racing that want the tote/bookmaker system changed. Racing needs new viewers, more people tuning in on a Saturday to follow the narative of the season. Televised racing is essential, and that will only be achieved by adding interest to the format (see darts and snooker). The image of smoky betting shops and insider knowledge still haunts the industry and as the old generation of punter dies out they need to be replaced. The scoop 6 can be marketed as a ‘fun to follow’ lottery ticket type bet with smaller dividends paying out at 4 and 5 winners. A trainer/jockey grand prix can be run with 16 jockeys rotating the ride on 16 horses trained by different trainers. To interest ppl you need them to feel involved so personalizing trainers and jockeys in a boxing style clash, advertised on the tv channel periodically should get sports fans to identify with the personalities and indeed the horses atop the sport. The funding required to launch the venture should come from a sponsored tote with the main target being to massively promote the Saturday scoop6 and placepot pools.

Cheekpieces, better ground, fully fit = different horse. Still not sure he will be good enough but then again I’m not entirely sure how good he will NEED to be. Dunguib must stick to the novices though.

By essence an avearge is the mean of prices above, and below your 10/1. Therefor the trend would continue with any price.

HL about that EW Chelts. I’m not sure how bad that run was from Zaynar, first impressions are that the ground didnt suit and the horse could use more work. That being said I think we have just seen a decent type in Quwetwo and is one to watch in no uncertain terms. With regards the festival I wouldnt put Zaynar out of the picture but with doubts over the Go Native form line and question marks over Solwhits preferred ground I’m wondering if we should be looking outside the first few in the betting? Punjabi and Celestial Halo form lines dont strike me as good enough to win this so I turn my attention to the likes of medermit for EW value? Shoot me down then……

Chelts, interesting perhaps but i’m of the opinion Paul would have chosen Tidal bay over Quwetwo had the latter been contesting a race aginst Zaynar.

I can’t agrue with you on that! Interesting though Quwetwo nust have been going some at home nevertheless, worth an EW?

Ref Dunguib, Fenton noted ‘we need one or two to come out’ – Do you think he was seeing Binny as a chief threat? To be fair the only ppl holding up binnys price were on TRF claiming more ‘value’ was to be had now the horse was showing poor form.
In fact I can think of one poster in particular that would probably state that Binoculars withdrawal from the race would only serve to inflate his price larger still, that the horse was even better value and that Nicky would be certain to win the big one with him now as he has only the CH in mind……

Dunguib is certainly not a young horse but he needs to learn his trade amongst the hectic pace and large fields of Cheltenham before he tackles the CH. His jumping errors and whatever may cause them will certainly need to be addressed in order to handle the leading contenders in the CH sphere.

At 1.3 for the place on betfair in a 4 runner affair I would suggest most definitely not worth an EW! Watch the bookies trim Zaynar for the CH after a facile win while 1/10 on….

Perhaps UM posted those comments on the wrong forum? I think it’s betfair where those words are commonplace.

In much the same way as isolation in a 2mm steel shell causes us to exponentially multiply our frustrations and anger during an incident of road rage, the anonimaty of forum discussion has a similar effect on how we choose to express ourselves. I for one find it frustrating that most forum discussions have to reduce to one forumite directly TELLING another they are talking tripe in derogatory terms and patronising comments. Is the purpose of a forum discussion to learn anothers opinion? Or is it to win an argument? My personal feeling is the former. I can find arguments anywhere in life without needing to hide behind my computer subconciously repaying the bullying I was probably subjected to in the playground.

On a side note, accronyms such as FFS, IMO or any variation of your bloody opinion get my goat. I know it’s your opinion wether it be honest, humble or very much of either of those. When I see the IMHO it reminds me of someone saying ‘to be honest…" before going on to make a dubious statement. I don’t need to explain my issue with FFS other than it makes the poster look like an inarticulate e-thug.

Well if the power of positive thought is worth anything gerald, I’m on your side with a cheeky interest at 420/1 after your ‘dark horse’ comments some months ago. Start chanting the kilcrae mantra now……

I think BB sets an incredible standard and not withstanding slip ups the only threat is tidal bay, who I will be covering in the WO BB Market.

Backed BFT and BA after last years race too. No great insight there though but if Ruby takes the ride hes got every chance if he carries less than say 11st 2. Black Apalaches best chance has surely past but that being said if he gets to the front in that rhythmical jumping pattern again who knows.

Call me whimsical but Irish raptor is still a horse I fancy at 80’s.
