Excellent follow up Gerald thanks. I fancy him at a big price if he runs.
Cheers for the comments on flintoff. I found last years sportinglife article and the GN was mentioned. With his evident prep and temprement issues I’d still have him at 200/1. That being said I would expect to see him miss the race.
I actually think Mark Williams is a very live outsider at around 25/1. An ex world champion who seemed to have the world at his feet before losing his way. Slowly coming back to form and worth a nibble.
Does anyone have any information on Flintoff? Despite his disjointed season at various trainers I like his profile but I have heard nothing of the horse this season. Big price on the machine but not big enough to believe he is a non runner at this stage.
I believe the reference to Denman needing soft ground to win was based on his opposition not himself. i.e good ground see’s Kauto at an advantage rather than Denman at a disadvantage.
Maybe the comment should have been Denman needs soft ground to beat Kauto.
So we only need Madison and Notre Pere to defect to leave mon mome top weight? I would be working around that handicap framing at the moment. Is Piraya a likely runner?
Ah Moe, but thats no bad thing for me. I am certain of the level of IC’s ability so any doubt in others minds just builds value into the horses price. I have been doing well out of the ‘French bred horses deteriorate earlier’ mantra for some time ref Kauto at evens for his last King George and better for last years gold cup. Still have him at an outsider for next years Gold Cup though, around 12/1 feels right to get there and go on to win it.
Theres hardly any point in discussing what would have happened if Kauto hadn’t fallen, or even if he hadn’t hit the eigth fence. Jumping is all part of the equation in NH racing and I wouldnt be taking a horse with a 50/50 record over gold cup fences to win the race in his 11th year. Unless the price was right, ofc.
IC is a better horse round Cheltenham than Haydock so little will be answered there ref next years gold cup. Kauto will still be untouchable at kempton but I think he will be trained with the KG as his primary goal next season. Kauto is streets ahead of any other horse round Kempton but he simply doesn’t take to Cheltenham with similar dominance and any age related decline will be seen at Prestbury park. An eight year old Kauto didn’t get into the 2008 gold cup race. A 10 year old Kauto didn’t put his best effort forward in 2010. An 11 year old Kauto has it all to do next year against younger opposition. I believe Kauto’s 2009 effort would have won the gold cup this year incidentally but I feel PN should concentrate on building the great horses legacy at Kempton next year.
Im pretty confident in my view that kauto was still searching for the effortless rhythm that he usually has during his races BEFORE he hit the first fence. I was there, and it’s how I saw it. IC travelled better than any horse in the race pretty much from the 2nd circuit. I dont feel we will see enough from Kauto to win another GC but I would love it if he did. 2 more King Georges look very much the possibility though.
Being a firm believer of self congratulations, its good for your confidence, without that you would never put your hand in your pocket!I have celebrated every night of the festival with a different bottle of champagne and i"m still not sick of the stuff! My Doctor would say i"m an alcholic and my psychiatrist would say i"m addicted to gambling! I say until you have had the thrill of seeing a horse you have watched develop over a number of years carrying your hard earned cash and jumping and still travelling at the 2nd last at Cheltenham, then powering up the hill to win you a bundle, you haven"t lived! Anyway i have a dilemma for next years Gold Cup,
Imperial Commander
,
Somersby
,
Weapons Amnesty
,
Mikael d"Haguenet
! One of those 4 will win!
I’ve also been following Imperial for a couple of years and this years gold cup was unforgettable! Gut feeling is Weapons will be the biggest threat to IC next year. KS will make the frame but I feel MDh won’t quite be at Gc standard with his Uk chasing debut so late in the season, providing he actually runs at leopards in 2010.
Really enjoyed following the results and some awesome advice from several posters. Very enjoyable!
No no no. 6/1 about kauto to win the 2011 gold cup is entirely valueless IMO. Give him the rest of the season off, bring him to the king George next year and consider the position if he loses, which I doubt he will. If he wins take him to Cheltenham again via the normal route. If he loses next years gold cup take him back to kempton for his final run in 2012.
Under no circumstances would I consider the grand national for him.My understanding of Denmans heart condition is that the operation was done to ENABLE the horse to continue racing in safety. I have no concerns about seeing denman enter the grand national but it would be highly unlikely that a declining horse could carry top weight to victory in such a race. You can of course argue Denman is not in fact in decline but something has prompted Harry to target the national in favour of the gold cup next year. All things going well next year I think he could be a very short priced favourate if he does line up but around 8/1 would be fair to me.

6: Voler La VedetteGoing along the lines of television at the moment I would have thought a reality show following 12 apprentice jockeys voted by the public each week with the winner getting a ride on a PN mount in the Grand national would kindle interest amongst the public. PN, Clare Balding Frankie D on the panel with Ruby and AP as mentors, who also ride in the great race.
A tongue in cheek suggestion of course but it would really heighten the profile of racings stars.
Dont you agree that to the uninterested public horse racing is, in the first instance, just boring?
All they see is a bunch of horses running around in a circle. These same people see gambling on horses a one way street to the poorhouse, to alcoholic fathers and shuffling old men. When racing used to be on terrestrial TV more do you think its poor viewing figures were because it was shady and underhand, or just boring?
In the words of the great Billy Flynn, "Give ’em the old razzle dazzle, razzle dazzle ’em……"
It’s a transition many parlour sports are coming to terms with and they don’t like it much either. But its necessary. Racing only exists now because the bookmakers enable it. Put the power back into the hands of the governing body by creating DEMAND for the sport.
Reform the sport, then the transparancy must follow.
