Now, I’m not one who usually has a gripe or highlights others’ shortcomings or deficiencies; but something has been annoying me ever so slightly these past few years, and I think now is the time to get it off my chest.

So, I place my Sunday Soapbox in front of you and will now step up to raise a couple of issues. Feel free to use for your own purposes when I alight.

Good people of the forum, pendantry is not what you’d call my raison detre ( sorry I don’t have the wee arrow thing on my keyboard for to place above the first "e" in detre  ), nor do I wish to condemn to the fires of hell those culprits I am now about to have a go at.

No, I just hope that they will now see the errors of their way and adjust ( or adapt ) accordingly to the basic rules of spelling etc.

    Here goes:

I have noticed how some people on t’internet continuously use the phrase, "should of" … as in, "he should of won", or she should of divorced him" etc

For the love of the big man ( ok, or woman :P ) upstairs, the correct phrase is SHOULD HAVE ! Come on, how hard is it ? Duu – uuuh, as they say. :)

Next: the words argument and truly.

Now, if I had a quid for each time I see these simple words spelled wrongly, I’d be the proverbial millionaire.

There is NO extra "e" in argument, as in arguEment ( ) … and there IS most definitley no "e" in truEly (  ). Jeeezuuuus H Christ ! :x

    Anyhow, that’s me done.

Your turn, if you wish :D

I think that in all walks of life people should be quicker to thank and praise people; as it is we all make an effort to hand out critiscism.

Personally, I think people should give up trying to act tough by offering private bets on a public forum everytime they have a differing opinion. It does not make you look hard,

Marble, perhaps you should re-phrase the above with "Clever, smug,Cocky" but not Tough, there is nothing tough/hard about having a "friendly" wager with fellow forumites that you have a trust with!
I personally cant be doing with those who feel the need to come across as "Big players with balls of steel" who place £500 e/w bets on perhaps Madison du Berlais at 16/1

I’ve never really viewed forums / blogs and the like as places where perfect grammar and spelling are paramount. Most people type their comments quickly and don’t spend much if any time reading them back and correcting them. So, although "should of" instead of "should have", is annoying, on the internet it’s something to shrug your shoulders at and move on.

However, as it’s "moan" time, here’s a few of mine:-
    1) The co-op advert when the scots guy say "gooooood with fud". Gets up my swede that.
    2) The Danone advert, when that wench coos "mmm Danone" at the end.
    3) Journalists (not internet posters) who use "shoe-in" instead of "shoo-in".(There’s a sports journo in

    The Independent

who used to make this mistake (Roger Alton?) – hope he’s learned by now.
    4) (An example of this is in this weeks

    Spectator

, an organ that usually has the highest copy-editing and proof-reading standards) The use of the term "pre-book". WTF’s that?
    5) "At this moment in time". What’s wrong with "now"?

Guilty as charged. :( I did write "should of won.." in another thread, and normally try my very

    bestest

with grammar. This is not a regular occurrence and completely understand the error and it’s annoyance. My only defence can be tiredness and alcohol, as it was almost 4:00am.

Now go **** you’re self. (sober)

lazy grammar not such a bother on forums for me, few of us are footperfect but two things that grate, and are already apparent on this thread incidentally are the following, and apologies in advance for repeating them:-

****, feckers, feck, knut, cnut and all varieties thereof…
I realise it’s generally male banter but I think, if allowed to go unchecked and proliferate as it does, then I wonder if it discourages others from posting – those who are able to engage in discourse without recourse to such profanities. Just a thought.

Secondly, the use of what may seem to onlookers especially women, derogatory terms aimed at their sex, such as…bint, wench, slut, slapper, all of which I’ve read on here in recent times….well, how many women bother to write on here these days? is a single sex forum a desired result?
Some might turn a blind eye but personally, I do find it tiresome and belittling.
If we turn it around and imagine a forum dominated by women, with a few male onlookers, would they be happy to read posts they might deem to be misandric?…
    and say nothing?… I doubt it :)

Sshh I’ve got 100 quid on Crystal Palace i’m trying to watch it in piece.

Go and play games with your ‘mates’ on the forum, dickhead.

Classic Marble, trying to be clever! Funny how that Madison du berlais bet still comes back to haunt you! You know why? I can see a fake just by the way he writes! Thanks for finally putting your hands up though!

Marble was annoyed that he had gone for MDB in a long, reasoned post on page 1 of the thread, and then someone goes on and congratulates someone else who mentioned the horse 10 minutes before the race.

    Unfortunately,

Over the years we have lost quite a few posters – female and male – because some of the points highlighted in "Moehat’s" post.

Perhaps, more members could air their views on this issue?

In much the same way as isolation in a 2mm steel shell causes us to exponentially multiply our frustrations and anger during an incident of road rage, the anonimaty of forum discussion has a similar effect on how we choose to express ourselves. I for one find it frustrating that most forum discussions have to reduce to one forumite directly TELLING another they are talking tripe in derogatory terms and patronising comments. Is the purpose of a forum discussion to learn anothers opinion? Or is it to win an argument? My personal feeling is the former. I can find arguments anywhere in life without needing to hide behind my computer subconciously repaying the bullying I was probably subjected to in the playground.

On a side note, accronyms such as FFS, IMO or any variation of your bloody opinion get my goat. I know it’s your opinion wether it be honest, humble or very much of either of those. When I see the IMHO it reminds me of someone saying ‘to be honest…" before going on to make a dubious statement. I don’t need to explain my issue with FFS other than it makes the poster look like an inarticulate e-thug.

UG, are you sure about this? I can’t recall threads where women have been referred to in such derogatory terms and I’m sure if it were as common as you claim I (and others) would of commented on it as I too hate that sort of thing – I maybe wrong and just missed it or perhaps worse than that become insensitive to it. Seems very unlike TRF to me……

Perhaps UM posted those comments on the wrong forum? I think it’s betfair where those words are commonplace.

    Agree pompete.

The only derogatory comments towards women I’ve read on here recently come from Ugly Mare herself, in relation to her Middle Eastern sisters.
