Seems I am in the minority here.
I only ever bet singles on big races, generally handicaps where odds are 12-1+. Otherwise its all yankees, lucky 15’s, canadians, lucky 31’s. Both e/w and win only. I consider all races, although generally look for 8 runners or more. I am happy to bet 5f sprint or 4m slog and everything in between, every class in between.
The reason I bet like this is two fold… Firstly I cant afford to bet much and so doing multiples lets me have 10p unit bets with the chance of £1000 returns. And secondly, I love the game! I dont want to be too selective with what I bet on and therefore watch.
Considering ATR is free then there is no doubt where the value for money lies. however, i spend most of my time online and so both channels have a decent replay service for free these days.
It still boils down to being able to assess a race properly. If you always assess a race wrongly then where you think the value lies is going to be incorrect. This, I would suggest, is not a betting tactic to employ unless you really know the formbook and the game inside out!
Such a fluctuating market for the GC this year. The race can be won by outsiders (Cool Ground, Nortons Coin) and have large priced place horses (Sir Rembrandt, Harbour Pilot, Turpins Green) so I may play 3 or 4 of the 20-1 + each way and hope for the best. Air Force One, Barbers Shop and Albertas Run for example.
I dont think Denman can improve fitness wise from yesterday to March 13th. With his heart condition, I doubt Nicholls would have ran him unless he was very fit. However, re-unite him with Sam Thomas, Get him in front, run left handed and it may be different. But, no matter what your opinion, we will only ever know the truth on Friday 13th March!
Completely agree with Ugly Mare here. Would much rather a £2 punter won the money than a big syndicate staking thousands.
HF, or other large syndicates winning the money, would appreciate there "fortune" far less than Mr Duckworth who had his normal £2 bet. It would be life changing to the £2 punter…it would be a good day at the office for a large syndicate. Thats just my view though. It would change my life were my £2 line come up…and that of my missus, my mother, father, brother, etc.
I dont really understand why Madison De Berlais is not getting praise for his performance. It does seem ridiculous to think a horse who had run 32 times before today could win in such an authoratative manner. However, seeing is believing, and if you remove Denman from the race he has absolutely destroyed Albertas Run. I was shocked when I looked at my paper and saw MDB was only 8 years old. Younger than Denman! Surely its not beyond the realms of possibility that he is improving quite rapidly? Add to that he probably feels like a champion winning races instead of finishing 2nd, 3rd, etc then surely his confidence is being improved. Hennessy winner…AON winner…Gold Cup winner? He’s winning the right races to be considered a very live contender.
I am not saying I’d back him come 13th March but certainly needs to be included in thoughts for the race.
That was a mighty performance…just noticed Madison de Berlais is only an 8yo…feels like he been around forever! Could just be improving at an alarming rate! He won the Hennessey and lets be honest, that race is only ever won by good horses. I am in shock at how good he was there!
With Blazing Bailey so out of form this season I dont suppose its out of the question for Alan King to run Nenuphar Collonges. He likes the track. Might be E/W possibilities but hard to imagine he’d beat Big Bucks, Kasbah Bliss and Punchestowns on decent ground…on soft…might have a chance as I am not sure any of the top 3 are out and out stayers.
Some members will be familiar with the loyalty card on offer with one of the big bookies, whereby when, for example, you’ve staked a total of £2,000 you get a free £20 bet. I reluctantly signed up to one of these but over time became increasingly fed up with not only the concept but also the practicalities. To begin with, I found the constant dialogue:-
"Have you got your card with you?"
"No, I’ve left it at home"
"Oh you’re very naughty, aren’t you?"I had a chuckle at this Ken. Sounds all too familiar on the few occassions I do pop in the bookies now. Almost all bets are placed via the internet now. Only if I cant get online do I venture in the bookies.

Unfortunately, big handicaps always seem to get a raw deal when it comes to re-arrangements. And for punters, they are the races they want run! The AON, despite being a good race, is a trial for cheltenham. The totesport trophy…that is all about now!
Economically, its important that racing resumes wherever possible. Cant afford too many blank days in the current economic climate I would have thought. Like with all decisions, there’s usually many factors to consider.
From reading the posts about road conditions though, does sound like Southern Englad councils are pretty badly prepared. I live near Edinburgh and, despite there being no snow here just now, the roads have been gritted!!!
I think Kasbah Bliss is due to appear at Haydock prior to Cheltenham. That should let us see if there is still 4 legs in each corner. On form, he would have to be the choice. However its the age old quandary of proven ability against potential ability.
Despite the cold weather and rainy winter I still think it doubtful that the ground on day one of cheltenham will be any slower than good to soft. That should be fine for Kalahari King over 2m. But better ground would have been preferable for him. Shouldthe ground be real bad then Ferdy could wait for Aintree and Punchestowns as I’m sure he wont want to subject Kalahari to a ridiculously hard race as a novice, even if it is cheltenham.
I imagine of that list only half will run.
No bet race for me but I think Exotic Dancer is the one. Odds will be too short to justify a bet though.
