I almost always do singles, occasional CSF in big races. Mixture of exchanges and bookmakers (always online).
Ante Post is my passion, Cheltenham Festival and the English Classics mostly and I had an incredibly profitable streak from 2000-2005 but have been much more quiet since. I currently have 24 ante post bets in the book.
I used to do speed ratings religiously but stopped all but the big meetings three years ago when a young family and change of job meant the time required was prohibitive. I loved the process of doing ratings and I think I learned a lot from compiling the figures even when they didn’t immediately point to winners. It changed my thinking on the sport in other words.
On the negative side… I sometimes have a tendency for too many action bets, sometimes chase losses and occasionally bet with my heart…but I am working on all three shortcomings and confidently predict I can eliminate them all in another twenty to thirty years or so.
February 12, 2009 at 02:52 #209775Seems I am in the minority here.
I only ever bet singles on big races, generally handicaps where odds are 12-1+. Otherwise its all yankees, lucky 15’s, canadians, lucky 31’s. Both e/w and win only. I consider all races, although generally look for 8 runners or more. I am happy to bet 5f sprint or 4m slog and everything in between, every class in between.
The reason I bet like this is two fold… Firstly I cant afford to bet much and so doing multiples lets me have 10p unit bets with the chance of £1000 returns. And secondly, I love the game! I dont want to be too selective with what I bet on and therefore watch.
February 12, 2009 at 02:58 #209776Those of you who say you put your bets on first thing in the morning, do you not find that in some cases you see your selection drifting badly in the betting later in the day and go on and get beaten, and wish you hadn’t placed your bets so early. I know the money isn’t always right, but I’m finding time and time again, a horse that shortens strongly before a race often wins, and a big drifter nearly always loses.
Most firms offer guaranteed odds now WD, but I agree- one of the skills you need to develop is anticipating how the market will move, when to take an early price and when to wait for Betfair before the off.
