You’re some man Gerald, are you even a guy, or is that short for Geraldine ?. I’m not joking when i say as things stand, you’d be 4/7 to end up at gamblers anonymous or some similar organisation. Wannae take me up on these odds ? :)

    What’s the problem?

The ante-post shopping sprees are generally okay, as I have an idea of which horses I want to back.

I can’t see anything wrong anywhere else.

Using Betfair will keep me out of trouble, as I will win bigger than at the bookies.

My Betfair account shows a profit for
    December 2008
    January 2009
    Since 1 January 2009
Since I started betting again on 28 November 2008
Since when I opened my betfair account just before the Irish 1000 Guineas to back Halfwaytoheaven, but I couldn’t because I only had an Electron card, and I couldn’t prove I was over 18.

It shows a loss of £9.97 for February 2009.
This would have been a profit if Betfair had given me back all the money from the Schweppes, because I would have backed Haafes at 26 (Saturday, not today).

I generally bet on virtual racing whilst seated around my pool at home with a chilled glass of Chablis in hand.

Sometimes I stroke a furry white cat in my lap and mutter the words

"You have interfered with my plans for ze last time Mr Bond…"

    in a cod-Teutonic accent.

    Or novice hurdles or something…

There is no problem Gerald. Saying someone is ‘some man’ is nearer a compliment than anything else. It’s just you say that you ‘go on an anti post shopping spree’ as soon as you get your wages. However, you say you’re in profit so that’s alright i guess. I used to be on alot of races when i first caught the bug, but i’ve calmed right down.

The ante-post hamsters haven’t come home to roost yet.

Anti posts are worth it if the horse runs at a shorter price. I’ve got a couple of small ones on myself.

I wonder about this ‘begginers luck’ malarkey. Maybe it’s just that begginers know less, and sometimes knowing less is better. I remember sitting down and looking at a card, and picking 4 simulataneous winners. I could never do that now.

I will be starting to bet again around April.

I will bet one or two races a day maximum, usually handicaps, usually with single figure fields.

I compile my own simple ratings and bet in line with my own prices using a relatively huge bank for a smallish profit.

I also used to bet on outsiders at largish odds but fell foul of the premium tax with that ploy, mainly down to luck rather than good judgment on my part. So I won’t be doing that anymore.

    I don’t ..
    I don’t lay horses.
I never ever bet with the bookies, for various reasons.
    I never play in-running.
I don’t use a bot or any automated bet placing software, although, if I was serious about betting I would.
    I don’t trade out.
    I don’t chase losses.
    I don’t do ante-post.

    I do ..
I decide stakes before I see the prices offered, these are determined by my current bank size.
    I do enjoy betting.
I do make sure that I have at least two days off a week, usually Sunday and Monday.
I keep my betting bank separate from the family finances, no-one but me knows what is in my racing account.
I draw down profit or top up losses on a yearly basis. If I blow my bank early, which hasn’t happened yet, then that’s it gone.

Racing is a bit of fun and there to be enjoyed imo. I reckon you are doing a fantastic job if you get your entertainment for free, anything else is gravy.

I bet mug multiples on anything that takes my fancy, i don’t trust anything enough to have a serious punt. I gave up on anti posts after Nashwan @16 2000 Wrong one of stouteies 1000 and wrong one of elsworths Gold Cup in a treble. :(

Entertainment only these days and i use the word lightly!

99.9% of my bets are on Betfair and the other 1 on Betdaq. WBX charges for withdrawals or something, so keep away from them.

I may in future open accounts with other bookmakers for the free bets available which of course I would lay off on the exchanges after using.

Wouldn’t dare use Betfair or phone or internet..make a point of going to a bookies, but not usually going out of my way to go to one [sort of diceman principle]. Usually bet ante post at big prices; very small amounts; quite often when a horse drifts out after a bad run eg See More Business in his Gold cup year…don’t keep a record of winnings/losses as have a knack of forgetting the losses quite quickly [found a little tin full of betting slips one day with horses like Young Hustler et al..obviously losses!] In retrospect used to back an awful lot of horses with no chance out of sheer ignorance; went through a spell of picking winners everywhere

. Have a big problem with my Oh So Risky syndrome where I get certain horses that I have to keep backing because I know the day that I don’t they’ll win . Only really bet a lot at Cheltenham week; we always go on the Tuesday and have our bets with the Tote before racing starts; take the week off work and go to the bookies each morning….errr still back an awful lot of horses with no chance out of sheer ignorance…..

For me its 100 per cent betfair , in running , on Lingfield , wolves , and Gt Leighs (f it ever returns ) I do trade out , ,I go to Newmarket as much as I can and when live I tend to lay one that has not impressed in prelims

Since I specialised I have been making profits , maybe thats the key
    :D

    have fun

I totally agree about specialisation. By specialising in a particular area or areas you lose the desire to bet in other races, so it cuts out all the stupid bets. You also get greater satisfaction, because you are an "expert", or at least knowlegable, in your area.

Those of you who say you put your bets on first thing in the morning, do you not find that in some cases you see your selection drifiting badly in the betting later in the da and go on and get beaten, and wish you hadnt placed your bets so early. I know the money isnt always right, but im finding time and time again, a horse that shortens strongly before a race often wins, and a big drifter nearly always loses.

Very true. Wish all my lovely lovely hunter chases would stop getting flipping rained off, though. I have Nicholls animals to lay, dagnabbit!

Have done the scoop 6 once (never again), Jackpot never, 100% record in the Placepot (once) though it made a loss with most favourites winning (never again). I don’t do multiples. Do like ante-post bets but only on the very big races; not generally the weekend handicaps. Have to be even more careful these days with trainers not going for the obvious race, with so many choices.

I stick to win bets and an occasional each way. Looking at the best quality races of the day (not every day), working out 100% books, then adding a small margin for error. e.g. Anything I believe has a 4/1 chance I will back at 5/1 or more. Usually back best value horse/s as the main bet/s plus savers on any other value bets. My average price taken per horse is 13/2 and per race 9/4. Rarely back odds-on, never “worse” than 4/5.

Staking plan for main bets is based on the table of odds and chances. 33 points on something I believe has a 2/1 chance, 20 points 4/1 and 6 points 16/1 etc. Average stake per race 34 points. Mostly on Betfair but more with off course bookmakers recently. Less with on-course bookmakers, that market seems less competitive these days, often just savers. The main bets that are on course are usually maidens, where there is more of a paddock edge. Most main bets are usually put on late the night before or at early prices.

When backing value prices I’d be disappointed if most of my bets are not well backed, some remain roughly the same but few drift badly. If they do drift it is probably because their chance is not as good as their form suggests. Sweating, playing up, not fit etc. I wouldn’t have worked the race out wrong, would I?

I rarely bet in poor quality racing.
On the flat don’t really like betting in sprint handicaps or staying handicaps, unless they are of good quality, prefer 7f to 1m4f.
Quite like backing against “talking horses” in maidens and novice hurdles / chases.
I seem poor at laying horses so rarely do so.
Do like the pace angle and trainers in form / not in form.
