Marble, have you come out of retirement?
I’ve actually got MdB 280 for the win, 50 for the place for the GC, but only for my usual £2 stake.
However, my bigger stake bet at 90 for the GN isn’t looking good any more.
February 7, 2009 at 20:21 #208746Denman looked a bit mulish before the race to me.
He seemed tempted to plant himself a few minutes before the start with Ruby having to bump him along a bit. I can’t remember seeing that in him before.
February 7, 2009 at 20:21 #208747I’m not so sure Denman did look "a shadow of his former self". Take Madison out of the race and he’s beat the others well. Had the winner not run Denman would be odds on for the Gold cup after that.
So are you suggesting that Madison de Berlais is worth a rating of 190+, if not then Denman has run a long way below par.
Of course not. However if Madison hadn’t run in the race would you give Denman as low a rating as you now will?
Its a difficult race to work out. Madison isn’t a 190 horse obviously and Denman was never going to be at his peak today but the winner was very impressive and Denman’s comeback wasn’t unpleasing.
February 7, 2009 at 20:24 #208749Can anyone smell something?
February 7, 2009 at 20:31 #208750I would think team Denman wll be very concerned, considering his record when fresh thats got to be a massive dissapointment.
February 7, 2009 at 20:35 #208751I can’t figure out how the winner has seemingly made such enormous improvment on about his 500th start over fences.
February 7, 2009 at 20:37 #208752It is just a private conversation, being carried out in public.
February 7, 2009 at 20:37 #208753I can’t figure out how the winner has seemingly made such enormous improvment on about his 500th start over fences.

Perhaps he hasn’t. The likeliest scenario for me is that he was the only horse that came close to running to form and any overreaction from the handicapper could make the horse very difficult to place in the future. Perhaps his Hennessy run is better than it looked at the time, but even so, he still looks more like a low 160’s chaser than 170’s to me until he proves otherwise.
February 7, 2009 at 20:39 #208754He hasn;t. – the form isn’t worth a sook. Denman just didn’t go….they went slower that KS’s King George. AR has ran again too soon. JL is a cheltenham horse.
KS should be odds-on now.

I’m not sure I disagree with you.
That then though would have Denman running in the 140’s 30 – 40 pounds below his best. That seems a ridiculous amount but yes the winner could well be very flattered by the run.
Ok I admit it, haven’t got a clue what to make of it.
The track is suiting stayers today though Madison, Pancake, Tartak all got good form over further all of them scoot up. Ok Pancake maybe not scoot but won well enough.
February 7, 2009 at 20:46 #208757He didn’t look right in the paddock before the race, he seemed to be a bit pottery walking round.
February 7, 2009 at 20:47 #208758I suppose the way to explain it is that the runs until last season were over 2, 2.5 miles.
Last year, seasonal debut, couple of runs, then probably slightly injured at Cheltenham January 2008, because didn’t run again until GN.
February 7, 2009 at 20:48 #208759They were showing some footage of him at home earlier, and he didn;t look the big cock sure horse that he was last year… this isn’t just fitness and I’ll be surprised if he actually runs in the gold cup now….
February 7, 2009 at 20:56 #208761I have got to admit that Albertas ran like a pig, but not totally surprised
knowing that he is capable of performing at both ends of the spectrum!
Denman, well thank goodness Sam didn"t ride him, because the 1st 2 fences were shockers, but in No way am i blaming Ruby like others would blame Sam! Denman! at no point before, during or after the race did that look anything like the big beauty that won the Gold cup, he almost looked pony like, that was a very poor performance no matter what anybody says
almost makes me think he will be retired it was so not him in every way!February 7, 2009 at 21:12 #208765A race that poses far more questions than it answers.
On the face of it the only one who ran to his mark was the winner.
Denman just did not look as though he was out to win the race.
I would raise the controversial question, which I’m sure will pi$$ off Mr Nichols, but was Denman put in the race to win it or was he sent out just to get a run under his belt?
My stance on the Gold Cup is it will be a race to watch, not one to invest in.
February 7, 2009 at 21:13 #208766Doesn’t look good.
I certainly won’t be rushing to take the 4/1 on offer about Denman winning the Gold Cup.
I’ll be surprised if he even lines up at Cheltenham.

Harry Findlay said on ATR before the race that it was a final piece of work for Denman and none of his connections were backing him today.
