they are still on bestbetting.com, a better site anyway. I’ve long thought that the fiddlers like uk betting, sporting odds and so on shouldn’t be allowed on these odds comparison tables as they won’t lay a decent bet.
I wrote to Peter Webbon (was Jockey Club vet) about this about two years ago suggesting that vet certs were being abused. He was sympathetic but promised no action. What they need to do is have a number of vets licenced to them to descend on a yard once a vet cert is proffered to independently examine the beast concerned, as happened here in Ireland the day before the Thyestes when a horse came out to let Tony Martin’s in. I also agree that a horse taken out with a vet cert shouldn’t run for at least a fortnight. This has little to do with 48hr decs.
I’ve been hoovering up the 8/1 Rail Link this morning. I think his trial was perfect, not busting a gut to clock a fast time but doing just enough to win when most likely not 100% fit. The record of 3 year olds and Niel winners speaks for itself.
Just another example of how Cheltenham is taking over in the minds of many trainers and owners to the detriment of the rest of the jumps season. This horse took his racing well up to now, so for them to say he’ll only have 3 runs means that they think he’s more fragile than before. I’ll be opposing him this season as I think it’s hard for these top athletes to come back to their best after a season off especially without the seasoning of a few races.
I think that making excuses for horses is a fast way to the poorhouse- I thought his display at the weekend was one of a horse who either didn’t want to exert himself or had a physical reason not to be able to, with my money being on the former. I will be laying him anywhere he appears, but wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see him again.
Could someone fill me in on what C Soumi did after winning on Hurricane Run- was away (on honeymoon, good excuse) and missed all the fun.
Congrats to Cormack on a seemingly painless transition and for keeping that nasty Mr Davies away….
I’m with Corm and Sal on this one, not because of any personal beef with the bard of Basingstoke but because I don’t feel that his stewardship would allow the freedom of expression vital to the forum’s health. He has commercial interests which in my view make his assurances of an altruistic non-profit approach to the project unlikely as could be seen from the manner of his departure. If LRM accepts his offer then fair enough, but I hope she gives preference to an existing unbanned member or members.

Only just saw this after long weekend away (bank hol here in Ireland)
Never met Craig, and like Mounty never even knew his real name but had maximum respect for the way he ran the forum- a truly wise, considerate and fair man who showed endless patience sorting out our silly squabbles on here. Very, very sorry to hear this awful news.
Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam.

The winner defied the strongest recent trends in that he ran in the Guineas and did not win his last start- tend to think that if Hala Bek had run in and probably won the Dante, he’d have been a more trend-fitting winner. As it was greenness seemed to cost him victory. Every year gives you more information, but I’d still favour those prepped over further than a mile next year.
Senor Dali paid his Goodwood conqueror Championship Point a nice compliment by hacking up in a hot looking maiden at Sandown tonight…
Visindar
Price owes much to hype and less to the substance of his two recent wins in France, the second of which was visually less impressive but had the clock-watchers in raptures. Given his trainer’s and his country’s record and doubts about trip, track and big field he must be taken on at the price.
Sir Percy
The recent percentage is to take on runners in the 2000 Guineas running in the Derby, defeat for that race’s winner at the weekend another slight negative- laid at 6/1 post Newmarket.
Horatio Nelson
See above, and well beaten at HQ, laid at 7/1 post Guineas.
Septimus
A contender, will be Fallon’s choice I reckon. Ground it out at York, certain to stay. If it comes up soft must be a major player, but have a feeling something may outspeed him on good or faster ground, but respected.
Linda’s Lad
I vaccillate between fancying him and worrying that his trial was run slower than the fillies race the same day and that he has run more often and been beaten more than the typical Derby winner- on balance probably not good enough.
Papal Bull
Supplemented, like Kris Kin, by his astute trainer- my worry here is why he ran in the Chester Vase, an awful trial, and also that he didn’t travel well in that race- I don’t fancy him at all and will lay him if he shortens much more. When was the last horse to win a handicap then the Derby? Should be twice his price, will be stunned if KF rides him.
Hala Bek
This would be one of the training performances of the century. Surely his chance disappeared when he was forced to miss his trial.
Championship Point
Fascinating contender, won the Predominate very well after travelling all the way. Though this is not historically a good trial, this may be because it fell too close to the Derby (2 1/2 weeks) until Goodwood’s first meeting was moved back this year. It also proved his ability to handle an undulating track. Overpriced in my view at 18/1 on Betfair, I will be having some once he’s confirmed a runner and the ground looks decent.
Dylan Thomas
Did nothing wrong at Leopardstown in traditionally a strong trial, but wasn’t overly impressive either- has a small chance.
Atlantic Waves
Would love to have seen this one run again, but the bare Fielden form is not good enough- could see him running well up front without being good enough to win.
What you need for this race in recent years is a horse that is lightly raced but has won a good trial this year over further than a mile and has had a good preparation. This leaves us with Visindar, Septimus, Championship Point and a longshot Dylan Thomas.
I will be poorer(and surprised)if the Guineas runners win, and will be backing CP and possibly Septimus( latter if the ground eases)
Still think quotes of 2/1 are a joke, I’ve laid him some more- how short do people think he’ll be on the day, for God’s sake?
I presume you are talking complete s**t
e deliberately….
Didn’t High Chapperal win 2 Breeders Cups after the Derby and don’t Epsom winners follow up in Ireland fairly often?I fancy Senorita Rumbelita to win for the in-form Alan King. This speed-favouring race and track will be right up her street, she is sure to travel well in a field of lesser class than she has been taking on recently. Only Ladbrokes have priced up but anything bigger than their 14/1 will do me.This appears a weak renewal and few go in with decent graded form, so much so that the 4yo top-weight Blazing Bailey can’t be completely ruled out.
Seems only a short time since you were extolling the virtues of Killybegs, EC, "This is a fast horse…..anything over 5/1 is value"…etc
Does this mean that
a You have changed your mind
b You put a decimal point in the wrong place
c You just want to be right to help your fragile ego and are therefore tipping the 7/4 fav?
A very interesting question.
The interest lies in the difficulty of beating the market and hence turning a profit, an extraordinarily difficult task. In some ways, you have to get away from the desire to "solve the puzzle" and back winners, as the best way to maximise your pleasure from that source is to bet on favourites. You must be prepared to overlook the easy and the obvious and ignore the masses, seeing things not many see.
My greatest pleasure is when year end comes and I’m in front, something my father told me wasn’t possible.
The money is only a way of keeping score- for me at least it is not an end in itself, though I’m sure I’d feel differently were I doing it for a living. Is it a coincidence that his name seems to be a crude translation of "cavalier ramping"
