Hello,
Good day’s racing on Saturday, mixed event.
Head feature is the Swinton Handicap Hurdle over 2m.
Excellent prize money and usually graced by good sorts.
Looked at the likely runners for this year’s renewal and not very impressed :(
But one contender sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb..
CHERUB….Jonjo’s horse.
Has not had a great season [very poor really], has been tried over 2.4f which is perhaps proved too far for it and has had some bad luck, hampered in running, bad ground etc.
Ran well , to a point, in this race last year, almost fell. And for some strange reason has prepared for the race with a Flat Race at Kempton over 1m2f a couple of weeks :o
Yes, if running, I will be dabbling with the markets as soon as they have opened. ;)
regards,
doyley
May 4, 2006 at 12:04 #71848I was delighted to see the entries which meant Saif Sareea got on off 10-1. However apparently the course have already put a substantial amount of water on the hurdles track and with an unsettled forecast it wouldn’t be impossible for the ground to turn on the soft side, as a result we’ve decided to go to Musselburgh this evening for a mile and a half handicap worth 7k to the winner. Depending on how he gets on tonight and what conditions are on Saturday, it wouldn’t be out of the question that he turned up at Haydock as well as the race doesn’t look at all strong for such a valuable prize.
May 4, 2006 at 12:25 #71849good luck with that David

Looks like you completed phase 1 of the plan with the horse winning as easily as the odds implied tonight.Congratulations.
Incidentally I read somewhere that you intend selling the horse. Is this true and when do you intend selling?
May 4, 2006 at 19:12 #71851Thanks for the kind words Lingfield and FSL
Yes everything certainly went to plan tonight. Shame it took us so long to learn how to ride him:biggrin:
He’s entered for the Doncaster May Sales and will probably go there unless he wins at Haydock on Saturday. However as I said earlier he is anything but 100% likely to line up at Haydock. Either way he has been a wonderful servant to us. 6 wins, 5 2nds and over £45,000 in prize money. We have been really lucky with him and I shall always remember what Richard said to us after he worked him at home first time, ‘He just wouldn’t pick up the bridle’. Unbelieveable when you see him on the track really.
May 4, 2006 at 21:18 #71852dj…I note that you’ve not changed your "signature". If you don’t mind me asking, which National do you envisage Lord Of Illusion winning?
May 4, 2006 at 21:42 #71853It’s laziness as much as anything but Lord of Illusion took well enough to the course until breaking a blood vessel around the 13th fence. On good ground and from a similar mark as what he currently has I could see him running well in the race next year.
May 5, 2006 at 09:03 #71854Hello,
Congratulations on the Musselburgh success.
Although on a light weight for Saturday’s Hurdle,, how will the horse perform over the 2m on what will probably be G/F ??
The long range forecast earlier in the week projected heavy showers for Saturday, but this has now been amended to "likely" showers.
As I sit here in Manchester, the weather is beautiful, a bit cloudy, but no sign of rain as yet, altho’ there were some overnight showers.
As a Swinton H’Cap veteran, if the good/firm ground appears tomorrow, historically, the race is run at an incredible speed…and the speed has, unfortunately, led to some horse deaths in the past, as well as the career finishing injury to Declan Murphy.
Hopefully I am not displaying myself as a Doomwatch, but I am just enquiring as to whether Saif Sareea would require easier ground for a hurdle race such as this?:)

May 5, 2006 at 12:51 #71855Hello,
Appears CHERUB ain’t runnin’…:(

May 5, 2006 at 12:56 #71856The faster the ground and the faster they go, the more it will suit him. He travels so keenly that I still expect him to pull tomorrow no matter how fast they go.
He ate up well last night and the plan at the moment is to run. He has an each-way chance.
May 5, 2006 at 21:58 #71857E/W bets on Into the Shadows and Estepona
two outsiders for consideration…..Senorita Rumbalita and Glimmer of Light
May 5, 2006 at 22:28 #71858I fancy Senorita Rumbelita to win for the in-form Alan King. This speed-favouring race and track will be right up her street, she is sure to travel well in a field of lesser class than she has been taking on recently. Only Ladbrokes have priced up but anything bigger than their 14/1 will do me.This appears a weak renewal and few go in with decent graded form, so much so that the 4yo top-weight Blazing Bailey can’t be completely ruled out.
May 5, 2006 at 22:46 #71859My two conerns are Callow Lake and Into The Shadows, paticularly the latter who showed good speed last time but I don’t think she’s the greatest of jumpers and will need to improve in that department in this stronger field.
May 6, 2006 at 12:52 #71860Blazing Bailey e/w for me on the Cheltenham form despite the weight disadvantage.
May 6, 2006 at 17:17 #71861Thanks EC
Absolutely delighted with that. There were a couple of moments though when I thought he might just do it. That leap 2 out will be something to remember the day by!
Yes a shame for Estepona. Agree the ground was very fast.

I hand timed the two hurdles races today and both were with hundereths of a second off course records. Apparently the going was only good though.
May 6, 2006 at 22:47 #71863It was sad to see Estopona’s fate did not receive even a footnote after the race on the BBC, from what I saw anyway. The RP times for these hurdle races confirm the ground was very firm and even a layman could see the horses hated being ridden on it. Estopona seemed to break his leg because the ground he landed on was simply too firm which leaves one thinking once again if enough is being done (even basic watering) to make the landing area as safe as possible.
I would think the Swinton Hurdle day is no stranger to these sad fatalities as the ground is invariably fast.
