Quote: from zilzal on 11:47 pm on May 6, 2006[br]It was sad to see Estopona’s fate did not receive even a footnote after the race on the BBC, from what I saw anyway. The RP times for these hurdle races confirm the ground was very firm and even a layman could see the horses hated being ridden on it. Estopona seemed to break his leg because the ground he landed on was simply too firm which leaves one thinking once again if enough is being done (even basic watering) to make the landing area as safe as possible.
I would think the Swinton Hurdle day is no stranger to these sad fatalities as the ground is invariably fast.
Agree that the ground rode fast and that many of the hurdlers didn’t seem to be enjoying it. Many of them have also had long seasons "winter" jumping on softer ground and were probably crying enough on the firmer surface.
Did Richard Johnson go too soon on Boychuk or am I being hyper critical? I am not talking through my pocket as I didn’t back it!
To my knowledge the equine fatality was not mentioned on BBC. I’m not sure whether they wanted to intentionally sanitise the death for the sake of viewers and the sport’s image or just missed it or didn’t deem it worthy of mention.
It was a strange day’s coverage overall for them. The team was trimmed down and they didn’t seem to have the number of camera angles.
Balding was at Badminton horse trials, Williamson absent, Hislop reportedly no longer required and Scu off duty patting his boy on the back.
We were left with Persad acting as anchor (!) as well as doing the "what was it like to win?" interview stuff and McGrath commentating. There was a lack of analysis and action replays.
The David Pipe interviews were also bizarre with him being in a state of limbo as the trainer but not the trainer with the licence holding Dad being on holiday in Barbados! David seemed more gregarious than Dad and was amiable without saying anything of note.Presumably he went on to enhance his profile.
Incidentally what happened to Timmy Murphy? The BEEB did show an action reply of his unseating but the camera angle was inconclusive- did he just fall off while going well enough?
Thought that DJ’s Saif Sareea was going to threaten in the Swinton but faded into third. Still picked up good prize money and has proved a brilliant acquisition from a claimer. Is consistent over jumps but does have a touch of second and third itis.
Acambo was tipped by one of the many tipsters in yesterday’s RP and recovered its form on the firmer going. Hard to tell if it was really enjoying the really fast ground though as Murphy’s claiming substitute isn’t the tidiest.
May 7, 2006 at 09:19 #71865Does have a touch or second and third itus? Forgive me but he has won 6 times in 17 starts since he joined Fahey and then gets stick for being consistent.

I thought that you might get touchey and misconstrue what I posted David.
Taking the horse’s results this calendar year ,as the seasons are virtually indistinguishable, the gelding’s results read:-
FLAT 211
JUMPS 222283
I was NOT implying that the horse was ungenuine or inconsistent in any way.
Perhaps it is better h’capped or easier to place on the flat than over jumps.
As I said , it was a brilliant claim and you’ve always got a run over both codes. Some valuable place money was won yesterday.
I’m sure that you’ll do OK when the horse goes to the sales soon.
