I went to Haydock on Saturday and there were TWENTY
non – runners . To make matters worse there is no
kind of prominent information board to give racegoers
this information . In fact , nowhere is there any
indication of the prevailing going .
The course betting shop had a list of non – runners but
it should be Haydock ‘ s responsibility to provide this .
As to the main point of why there were so many
non-runners , the forecast going on the Thursday was
good – firm , as it was on the day . The non – runners
were almost all from the handicaps . The 13 runner
2 – y – o maiden race only had one non-runner . I take it
the trainers ‘ reason for not running was the ground .
In the opening sprint handicap I discounted Sierra
Vista ‘ s chance because she does not win on ground
faster than good . Trainer David Barker let her take her
chance and she won .

In fact , I only found out what the going was by asking
Mr Barker after the race . Haydock Park certainlly
weren’t telling me !

I do like 48 – hour declarations because they give more
time to study the form but loads of non-runners mess it
all up .

It looks like Anthony Kemp is the replacement for Rishi Persad . He was the studio anchorman on Saturday and
was the presenter at Newmarket yesterday .
It was , I believe , Anthony Kemp , who , I agree , does
not have , to my humble ears , an appealing accent .

What does " pig iron " mean , please ?
I looked at Betfair and WBX shortly before the National .
The totals matched were about £ 5 million on Betfair and
about £ 27000 on WBX with the leading fancies at shorter
prices on the latter .

I agree , Haydock is expensive .
It cost £ 27 to go into the Members’ enclosure on a Friday
evening last summer . Friday evening counts as the
weekend to Haydock Park . I thought the weekend
was Saturday and Sunday !
It was a competitive six race card but included a claimer
and the total win prize money was just over £ 20,000.
The top price for the Members’ at other northern
courses seems to be £ 18 , even on a Saturday , and in
the case of Ripon that includes a free racecard .
Chester is also generally overpriced . You pay for the
setting there but in its defence there are fewer
meetings to support the cost of running the course .

The Business section of today’s Independent carries the
following story :
" Setanta Sports is to mount an aggressive challenge in the
sports programming market by launching on the Freeview
terrestial platform with a monthly subscription price of only
£ 10.99 . The cut-price offer , available from March , seems
designed to tempt customers of BSkyB away from the
satellite group .
Setanta will offer Premiership football to customers from
August , the first time in more than a decade that top-flight
football has been available on terrestial TV . "

Reading the RP article mentioned by CarryOnRacing it
says :
" WHILE the power of their principal rivals is acknowledged with a degree of deference, there is a hole they will be looking to exploit, namely that, for the first time since the Premiership started 14 years ago, you will be able to watch live Premiership football next season without subscribing to Sky, as Setanta will be available on the Freeview network.
East said: "We think £15 is excellent value. We feel it will appeal to people who already subscribe to Sky Sports and Prem Plus.
"But there is also a market that cannot afford to watch Sky Sports and the other significant market is Freeview – those people who cannot have a dish or don’t want one. "
Perhaps this means that you will not need to subscribe to
Sky or NTL / Telewest to receive RUK . In my case Telewest costs £ 16.50 per month + RUK subscription .
However a subscription to Sky or NTL would still be necessary to view races from ATR courses .
Stevie Gee was ridden on its first outing over a straight
six furlongs at Newcastle by K. McEvoy and was beaten
18 lenghts . How many two – year olds win first time
out ? SP 13 / 2 so it must have been fancied .
On its second outing , on the AW at Wolverhampton , over 6 furlongs round two bends , it was beaten 9 lengths. . This represented an improvement on its previous outing .
It had never raced on the AW before and its first run had
been on a straight course . The jockey was D. McKeown and the SP was 33 / 1 .
On its third outing , over the straight 5 furlongs at
Southwell on the AW . it started at 8 / 1 and won by four
lengths . It was ridden by D. McKeown . He had only
ridden it once before . The surface at Southwell is different from that at Wolverhampton .
Would McKeown have made such a comment about Stevie Gee being the best horse in a yard which contained such as Collier Hill on which he was the usual rider or when he had not ridden it on the two previous occasions but only the last outing ?
Its subsequent three outings , two of which it won , were
on the grass over a straight six furlongs .
This is the link , but it is Dean Williams , not Darren
Williams , who has been suspended .
For the two main races of the day , the Hennessy Gold Cup and the Fighting Fifth Hurdle the Exchange figures for Betfair and WBX were as follows :
HENNESSY :
BETFAIR : Total matched : £ 1,931,813

Matched on winner : £ Not known
[ £ 8231 was matched at 16 and £ 165 at
16 . 5 ]
WBX : Total matched : £ 899
Matched on winner : £ 4 @ 16
FIGHTING FIFTH :
BETFAIR :
Total matched : £ 2,060,701
Matched on winner : £ 1,491,919
WBX : Total matched : £ 1411
Matched on winner : £ 926
Glenn,
You say " Look at today’s percentages – up to a mind boggling 5.5% per runner. BAGS racing is here. "
How do you arrive at your percentage figures ? For
example , in the Kempton 5-50 there were The Racing Post
states that the Total SP figure was 136 % . With 14 runners am I correct in saying that the percentages were
9.71 per runner ?
Walter Swinburn seems to be producing the goods with
16 winners , including the John Smith ‘ s Cup at York , to his
name this turf flat season , amassing over £ 260,000 in
win prize money . Of course he has the guiding hand of
father-in-law Peter Harris behind him so only time will tell .
I am a Telewest customer and rang them about the lower
subscription rate and the enhanced package .
After following this thread I was not surprised when I was told politely but firmly that neither was available .
Looking to the future is it possible to buy a satellite dish
and subscribe to RUK , on a freestanding basis , without
paying a subscription to Sky ?
As regards the RUK club pack , if you are a Telewest
customer they will not send you a pack . So ring them up to complain and you will receive a one month credit for not
receiving it . Then contact RUK and tell them that Telewest
will not assist in your receiving the pack and they will send
it to you .
I did this earlier in the year and also last year . I don ‘ t
think Telewest want RUK to have a list of their customers .
