Thanks for taking a look. Given these are your type of races I was hoping for a little encouragement. Never mind.
I went with Katiymann at 20/1. Last time I looked there hadn’t been anything for him and the opening price was still freely available. I doubt he would go bigger.
I backed the horse last time in another big field handicap. On only his third start it all seemed a bit too much for him although he did make a little bit of late headway.
Obviously, I am hoping that the extra experience and the extra distance will produce a nice bit of improvement but it goes without saying he will need some luck in running.
I assume he was an Aga Khan cast-off. The dam was a soft ground, Group winner over today’s trip. Hopefully, the Shamardal side of the pedigree might balance the need for a softer surface but to be fair a drop of rain might have helped. Possibly something to bear in mind for another day.
Interestingly, the Aga’s favourite is also by Shamardal. She has already won on a quicker surface and her dam was a listed winner on a quicker surface. She should improve for the step up in trip but that is reflected in the market.
Fingers crossed because (so far) I haven’t backed anything else today.
September 11, 2016 at 22:38 #1263149Well having got himself into what looked a very good position from a wide draw once they turned in he just appeared to hit a brick wall. The run just left a lot of unanswered questions.
Did he do too much too soon? Did he stay? Was the ground too quick? Is that as good as he is? The biggest question of course being should I give him another chance?
There was a little bit of market support and I suspect he is going to be a relatively short price for an ordinary handicap.
The bookmakers might have well have just written today’s result.
September 11, 2016 at 23:52 #1263156I was willing him on for you stilvi (once Hasanour had went out like a light of course lol), I really thought he looked a big danger close home, but then he just hit that brick wall. I don’t think it looked too much like the ground, or how the race was run, and I’d suspect he’ll be definitely be worth another go if dropped back a bit. I wouldn’t be giving up on him based on that run……..and that market support didn’t go unnoticed.
September 22, 2016 at 16:20 #1264313It’s not often I’ll put up an Ante-Post proposition for something like The Qipco Champions Long Distance Cup, but will make an exception this year. Run at Ascot on the 15th October, I have Ivan Grozny in mind for it. No idea whether or not it’s a speculative entry, but entered he is, and I suppose understandable, given the potential opponents, that he’s generally available at 20’s. Even though, I feel that I’m the founding member of the “Ivan Grozny Fan Club” and been banging the drum about him since the turn of the year, I just get the feeling that that 20’s will look generous, should he trap on the day.
They seem to have really got to the bottom of him now, and have worked out how best to run him. He owes me nothing after collecting a right few quid in that win on National Day at Aintree, but I’d like to get a few more quid back off him after his late withdrawal from The Ebor cost me a fair few bob.
I’ve had a go at that 20’s then, and hopefully this will be en-route to The Fighting Fifth at Newcastle, where I already have him home and hosed…………now watch him not even get an entry lol. Either way, I remain confident that he’ll have a big season over timber.
Talking of Ante-Post, it’s been a fairly good month, and an even better start to the Jumps. Wrath of Titans brought the house down (well my house anyway) when he landed The Kerry National for me at 33’s. I was very happy to call him before a market was formed, and with him a widely available 33’s for a good few days once the market opened, I was delighted to see him a clear winner at 7’s on the day.
As for The Cambridgeshire, encouraging to see Spark Plug make it, well so far anyway.
Not Ante-Post, but had some joy in consolation races at Ayr. Classic Seniority was a big winner at 20’s in The Bronze, and this was topped up by Goring, who nabbed 5th at 28’s, and this was followed by Intisaab filling the same spot for me at 9’s in The Silver. All downhill after that though,
That blank in The Gold Cup cost me a few quid, but shouldn’t complain after Harbour Law, which was my first bet in a Classic in living memory, as well as, I think, my first ever bet in The St Leger, did the business at 33’s.
The flat’s been kind then, and that brings me on to my favourite Flat Race, The Cesarewitch. My main fancy, All Set To Go, has already disappeared with my cash, but very hopeful that Grumeti can outrun his odds again (50’s ew 5 places & 85’s to 95’s), and feel that The Minch (40’s ew 5 places & 40’s to 44’s) is perfect for this contest.
Decent few weeks ahead, and looking forward to the jumps hotting up.
September 22, 2016 at 16:22 #1264314Apologies, bit of “self indulgence in this post, but have to for this guy lol”…….As much as I’m looking forward to Ivan Grozny, and that “Autumn Double”, the star attraction for me today is Prince of Johanne at Newmarket. As more of a jumps man, I don’t get as many favourites on The Flat, but along with old Quito, this boy would be my favourite flat horse horse of all time.
He’s been ridiculously successful for me, and came in at good odds for me more than once. He’s only a few pennies behind Rock On Ruby, as being the most profitable horse for me ever, and this as well as catching him at good odds a few times, is also helped by the fact that I’ve managed to land him in an exacta no fewer than 4 times.
First time was with Stevie Thunder in the 2011 Cambridgeshire (was a huge exacta for me, my biggest ever), and this was followed up by another big pay day in The 2012 Royal Hunt Cup, when he pipped another old favourite of mine, Excellent Guest, and this came a few weeks after getting the 1,2 with him and Fury at York. The final time was with Es Que Love at Sandown a year later.
You can’t help but love a horse who’s managed to nab 4 exactas for you, including 2 whoppers, but I thought he had been retired, as all signs were that his best days were behind him, having shown nothing last season.
Back he is though, and although asking a lot for the old boy to bely his odds of 50’s, yet alone dealing with a hot favourite, I’ve had a go, and just have to do him in another exacta…….surely to much to ask for a 5 timer.
Best of luck to him, and hope he comes back safe and sound.

September 24, 2016 at 18:33 #1264678Well done on your recent winners. You put plenty in so I am sure it is nice to get a reward now and again.
I am talking a reasonable game at the moment but my last winner is becoming a distant memory. Just to let you know Katiymann is back out tomorrow. Dropped in class and trip and reunited with his original jockey I am surprised he is double figures.
September 24, 2016 at 23:15 #1264710Thanks for that stilvi, appreciated.
Yeah, been a good couple of weeks, just going to enjoy while I can, that big run of losers will just be around the corner.
Got to give Katiymann a chance tomorrow, was a very encouraging run last time, and with him being a generous price, 12’s last I looked, he looks worth a risk. I’ll probably do a Lucky 31 as well, and looking at including the likes of Defoe and Synopsis to include in that line.
September 25, 2016 at 18:15 #126478614/1-9/2, so I wasn’t the only one fooled. Quite possibly the main mover of the day.
I was in two minds last time but when I saw the double figure price I couldn’t resist. Never again. Although it was over two furlongs shorter and he was held up this time, the business end was exactly the same. When asked to pick up he has found absolutely nothing. With each disappointment the head carriage seems to get higher.
I said before he was almost certainly an Aga Khan cast-off and although they got the early win out of him perhaps we are now seeing why he was a cast-off?
Ginge’s break sounds like a good idea. At the moment I might as well be throwing money on a bonfire.
September 25, 2016 at 20:13 #1264804You certainly weren’t……..I certainly got sucked in, but with nothing to show for it today. I think your initial reservations were spot on, though easy to be fooled after that last run, but don’t think I’ll be in a rush to get fooled by him again.
As for a break, it’s never a bad idea, especially if things aren’t going well, you won’t be the only one after those Newmarket results, that was hard going. I’m looking forward to November and the jumps kicking in proper, but seriously considering a quieter October. I’ve had a really good September, but it just won’t last. Was in this position last year, the September was one of my best months ever, followed by an October which can only be described as carnage. I don’t want a repeat, so I’d be surprised if any major wagers next weekend, and as for the rest of the month, I’ll concentrate only on The Cesarewitch, and The Cheltenham meeting.
Enjoy the rest if that’s the route you take.
September 25, 2016 at 22:15 #1264822Thanks, at the time of writing I was thinking well at least I still have 14/1 La Cressonniere for the Arc!
September 26, 2016 at 11:50 #1264841Bloody hell stilvi, just seen the news, that is rotten luck, and I feel your pain, a feeling I know too well.
September 26, 2016 at 21:56 #1264892Thanks, that followed on from Roly Poly, GM Hopkins, Clef and Shady McCoy on Saturday plus a whole heap of rubbish in the last two weeks.
Sometimes it is very hard at times to keep the perspective that it is only sport and there are far more important things outside the bubble.
September 27, 2016 at 18:56 #1264944That’s an horrific run of bad luck, and I could see why you’d struggle to get perspective with that lot. I always think it’s harder with this sport, as not only is your judgement brought into question with an unlucky spell like that, but there’s the added problem of hard cash being involved.
You know the time of day, and know the sport well, I suppose it’s a just a case of riding it out, and taking that break.
It does end, just look at this wretched run of “luck” I had in the 2012/2013 season…..
November 2012, it’s The Cork National, and I’m all over Outlaw Pete @ 33’s ew, and much, MUCH bigger prices on the exchanges. He’s absolutely cantering coming to the last, he’s all over the horse he’s upsides, an absolute certainty…….and he runs out. 4 figures down the drain, and I am beyond gutted.
In the lead up to the Festival, I had bet Katenko at huge odds on Betfair to get 32k, and the way his odds were tumbling, I reckoned he was due to go to off around 12’s. He was around 18’s, 20’s on Betfair when he got Colic less than a fortnight before the race………..that wasn’t good, and although I had laid off a few quid on him, I was waiting till nearer the day to lay off properly. I had envisaged laying roughly £1000 at 12’s, to give me around 20k, and I was super confident beforehand. In my opinion he would have pissed it.
I felt really deflated with The Gold Cup after that, but I consoled myself though in the lead up, with the £18 I had on Sunnyhill Boy @ 1000’s, and going into the day before the race, I was very hopeful, and at the very least he was getting bet as well, he was as low as 16’s, 18’s. Then, of course, Davy Russell got injured, leaving Sunnyhill Boy to get a convenient “knock”, allowing AP to jump on to Russell’s mount in The Gold Cup, Sir Des Champs. I hadn’t laid off a single bean on him. It was a murky affair, that was pretty indefensible, but as someone who followed the JP/Jonjo horses, I had to grin and bear it.
That Gold Cup just passed me by then, I was gutted, but very keen on one in the next in The Foxhunter, so brushed myself off, and had a good go at Oscar Delta @ 28’s. When he jumped the last clear, that bad luck was quickly forgotten, I was going mad, jumping about like a man demented, what a feeling, and I felt I deserved a wee change of luck. What could possibly go wrong
You can’t make this sh1t up.Was very glad to see the back of that Festival, and the season was turning into a very disappointing one.
After the Festival, I had a few in the notebook, and I had marked one down to follow, who looked as if he was just been out for a stroll on The Tuesday in the Novices Hcap……..not easy to spot one like this at The Festival. There can’t be many there just for the day out, but Nataani looked one to keep on side of next time. Cue Taunton a week and a half later, and I piled in at 20’s and 25’s in the morning, he gets well gambled…………..my lucks changed, and he’s 10-15 length clear, and going further ahead at the last with the race in the bag. What Happened Next?
All of those events, in the space of a few months, cost me a hefty amount, and although I still contributed on here, and chipped away with the bets, I just wanted to chuck it altogether, I was sickened.
I’m glad I kept going, but that was a torrid spell.
September 27, 2016 at 20:25 #1264955Got to keep going guys!!
The next good winner is just around the corner!!
Just to tell a quick tale….
Saturday at Newmarket after four races I had backed not just four losers but three of them finished STONE LAST!!!Then I backed SPARK PLUG PICHOLA DANCE and SHADY MCCOY . Two winners and a second!!
From zero to hero in an hour and a half!!
So optimism is the key!!
September 28, 2016 at 12:02 #1264973Bob any views on Ascot 7f handicap on saturday
September 28, 2016 at 15:36 #1264991Do you happen to know where Empire Of Dirt has gone? Obviously, not Willie Mullins!
September 28, 2016 at 18:21 #1265010lol, no, not WPM I’m sure.
I haven’t heard, but of all the Colm Murphy inmates, I’d be most interested in where he goes. I think Elliot might be the best stable for him, but not heard a thing yet. Could have another big prize in him this season.
