No hesitation here in believing that as far as the whip is concerned Chapman regularly complains about whip bans taking the shine off the result of big races as in he doesn’t think whip bans should occur.
I’m in the John Francome camp which favours banning the whip.John McCririck puts it in a nutshell that ‘hitting an animal in the name of sport’ is just wrong.
Anyone is entitled to a different opinion as to what they think the effect of the whip is but the appearance at least of horses being hit with whips is second only to fatalities in races in terms of being the worst aspect of the sport…..However,for the hyper defensive amongst you or those in plain denial of the facts this opinion is actually a world away from believing the sport should be banned.
December 31, 2017 at 07:23 in reply to: Matt Chapman in first ITV controversy at "The Derby" #1335129Not really an example of it here maybe but Chapman is definitely on the missing list when it comes to horse welfare as is clearly evidenced by his intolerance to any discussions involving a reduction of use of the whip in Racing.
It’s such a shame that Chapman can’t get his act together and sort out his glitches ( silly OTT voice overs and heavy handed attempts to try and make things fun) because his knowledge of form and punditry on the Opening Show for example is knowledgable, heartfelt and way better than anyone else’s so to dismiss him as a total idiot would be a mistake…..he just needs to watch himself back and go easy on the cringe factor.
From watching AOB’s interview with Matt Chapman on ATR, AOB has minimal awareness or even interest in records and stats.
The Ballydoyle approach according to this interview is to do the best they can with each horse as an individual eg horses end up in the same races on their individual merit, which for me makes the multiple entry factor in these stats a bit more acceptable until I recall ‘team tactic’ issues or the occasions when horses aren’t running strictly on their merits.
As we know AOB is obsessively guarded despite appearing to be accessible to the media and he doesn’t give away much or any personal insight,so appearing to enjoy being a world record holder was never going to happen.
Perfectly possible that in footage that we hadnt seen Chapman’s over familiar style had caused AOB to clam up but in a truly weird way the most revealing part of the interview was AOB’s awkward total inability or unwillingness to respond to Chapman asking him what his favourite food was.
If AOB enjoys his achievements then it is in a way that he isn’t able to share with the racing public.Fair enough.
I know what the OP is getting at and the idea that the BC are legitimate world championships is stereotypical US arrogance and doesn’t wash.
I’m glad that the Europeans treat the BC as pretty much an afterthought for the best horse and it is usually proven year after year that it’s usually a race too far ,a probability that most serious trainers can usually work out beforehand based on the type of horse they’re dealing with.
However, the surprising thing is still how many top class horses are still allowed to run only for them to run palpably as though they are OTT or for whatever reason they can’t show anything like their form….I can’t help thinking that surely a good trainer would know their horse well enough to avoid a record blemishing defeat…..some of them run embarrassingly badly and it would be a shame if the pursuit of money allowed this to happen.
The BC remains of interest but it’s nothing to get carried away with and is of little relevance to the story of the European season.

Great stat but anyone know how many runners?
Amazing trainer of even more amazing horses.
Would like to think he knows who is his best chance in some of these races as some of the results suggest that even he doesn’t know if jockey bookings are anything to go by……if AOB doesn’t know ,what chance have we got.
Not mad about team tactics and multiple entries either and rather than bookish looking lists of runners in G1s on here ( we can all read racecards and newspapers) I’d like to see the AOB runners in G1s that seem to be thrown into the races seemingly just in case (or you could argue on merit) but who run relatively or absolutely poorly or worse still are never ridden with a chance by being sacrificed as pacemakers.
The 2017 Arc was a good example.
Great record yes but there is more to it than bald figures.
Totally agree about Nick Luck ……..top class anchorman who knows his stuff and knows how to interview.
I’ve still got C4 ahead of ITV overall and the weak links in both productions remain obvious and I’m afraid, looks aside Francesca Cumani’s patent lack of passion is amongst them.Weaver is improving and isn’t a bad tipster but Hayley Turner is a write off.Chamberlin and Bell are passable but the Opening Show is as bad a programme as the Morning Line ever was.
Chapman needs an edit and clearly doesn’t respond to the universal criticism that he is inappropriate too much of the time.
Today’s studio based Arc coverage looked like an afterthought.Poor.September 29, 2017 at 13:48 in reply to: Champions Day – just post on this thread for chance to win pair ot tickets #1319263I’m in………….er no I’m not I’m 2 weeks too late

Enable is value at around about evens and Brametot is good eachway value at 12s or above.
Order of St George for 3rd.
Winter and to a lesser extent Ulysses would be lays for me.Kelleway and McCririck shouldn’t appear together because the overall impression given is too low rent.
Kelleway is unable to make any of her many opinions sound well thought out or popular to an even worse degree than Big Mac and that takes some doing.
Dullards like Chris McGrath are the other extreme and should also be avoided until they can show at least a modicum of broadcasting ability.
August 31, 2017 at 17:19 in reply to: Why have the BHA never had an investigation into this? #1316298Apologies…….I forgot to include mealy-mouthed.
What a ridiculous heap of a going through the motions toothless and pointless response that was by the BHA.Hopeless.
August 31, 2017 at 13:55 in reply to: Why have the BHA never had an investigation into this? #1316277I’m afraid its seriously uncool to point the finger in Racing because the whole industry thrives on a romanticised air of mystery and everyone thinking or pretending they’re in the know when in fact the romance actually amounts to corruption at one end and doing what you think you can get away with at the other with a bit of properly conducted honest sport in the middle.
Add into the mix that the people who run the sport are either totally self serving or utterly incompetent and you have the perfect recipe for blatantly suspect telephone conversations like the one ‘allegedly’between Dwyer and Mulrennan not being investigated properly.Sickening.
The presentation was utterly spoiled by Chapman… totally unable to bring gravitas and seems to think being over familiar ,mashing up people’s names and cracking lame jokes is appropriate no matter what ….embarrassingly bad and makes a joke of the sport. He obviously doesn’t watch himself back because this is chronically naff by any standards.A problem.
Delighted that the Coolmore team tactics blew up in their faces …very satisfying that they failed to get Harry Angel at it and that he actually won.
Hate the team tactics thing and the way Ballydoyle smother these races and it tarnishes their achievements for me.
I know how the stable jockey thing works but also poor that a ride couldn’t be found for Padraig Beggy amongst the fleet of horses as thanks and consolation for winning at Epsom.
I suppose that’s the thanks you get for not sticking to the anticipated stallion plan.

I’m in the Hayley Turner camp when it comes to Ballydoyle I’m afraid and think its healthier for racing when their multiple runner scenarios don’t go to plan.
Am I alone in really wanting to know what AOB was chatting to Princess Anne on the podium about after the remarkable Highland Reel won at Ascot because it was almost a shock to see him looking so animated ,expressive and unguarded in his manner.
I’m not a big fan of the multiple darts at the board approach at Ballydoyle in terms of numbers of runners but I’m increasingly frustrated by hearing the same old (albeit always gracious and polite) platitudes from AOB after the victories…really detracts from the sense of joy of victory that there should be to me…if his head is elsewhere other than wanting to be on TV at that moment then don’t do it.
I was surprised when Ferguson gave up his ‘proper job’ as a successful trainer to become effectively a ‘racing manager’ which has always struck me as a bit of a non job,and certainly so compared to being a trainer in my opinion.
Money talks I suppose.Interesting to see that maybe loyalty to Bin Suroor has won out in the end in this story especially as it seems he has either been very indiscreet or has been right royally stabbed in the front by the Racing Post.
