O’Brien will have to get creative here and be prepared to travel. I doubt he will have the record in mind, after all, Group 1s in Europe are what count (I refer to the mid season ones, compared to the global races)
I don’t think the ex Wesley Ward’s horse will race much , Ascot maybe that is it. No certainty she will win. July Cup as well? Aidan ain’t exactly an expert in the sprints (I know he has won it) Wachman use to get the sprinters
The Epsom 2nd, who ran a fine race, will probably go for the Irish Pretty Polly and hose up and then try the Nassau. By then Shutter Speed will likely run it that so long as the French Oaks goes well. There is no telling what will happen in the Irish Oaks but Ribblesdale winners don’t have the greatest of records (Bracelet won both in 2014ish)
I am not entirely convinced that Order of St George will win the Gold Cup, but, who has he to beat? Jessie Harrington’s horse?
Highland Reel, to be fair to him, might have another Group 1 in him. For his sake, he should be given a real chance to prepare for the Arc and just run in the King George and maybe York (he will likely be sent to the Breeders and Hong Kong or Japan at the end of the season) I just don’t want to see him in races like the Prince of Wales or Eclipse and the ICS.
Definitely keep Chruchill at a mile, he ought to clean up
He should and will send horses to the Belmont Invitational Derby and the Belmont Oaks which will be on around the time of the Eclipse. Who does he send to Arlington Millions? Deauville and USAR? I can’t really see Somewhat win the Yorkshire Oaks giving weight and she won’t beat the boys in a Group 1 (decent Lockinge performance) perhaps the Beverely Dee – Juddmonte will have two good horses in Arlington for that (Time Test and Suffused)
June 2, 2017 at 19:28 #1303074Twice Over, i agree also that he wont have the record on his mind or even care for it in the slightest. It seems he is not an attention seeker at all, quite the opposite in reality.
Regarding the record, for sure that a target of 4 non EU and 4 Two year old G1’s is quite realistic this year.
On a side note did anyone see the race that Idaho ran today FTO? He looked really promising.
Plenty of time for something to come out of the woodwork. It’s hard to imagine that Highland Reel got beat in the Hardwicke before going on to bigger things last year.
A little while ago it looked like the older horses would be carrying the flag, but in less than a month we have had Churchill, Winter, Rhododendron, Roly Poly, Alluringly & Hydragena all being G1 winners or placed. And that’s before 3 French Classics, 3 Irish and 2 English.
I think if someone went 6/1 i would have a bet on it still. WH are not betting on it as far as i can see.

Won well i thought, never touched him. Irish Derby next maybe ?
June 3, 2017 at 20:24 #1303367Give me a couple of days to digest it and I’ll get back to you, Botchy. The brain is totally fried after a surreal day of trading up at Hexham. I wish I was Simon Nott and was free to tell a few stories!
Epsom was a good meeting for O’Brien, though again I had the Oaks, Derby AND Coronation Cup on the important pile. Two out of three ain’t bad but the task gets harder and harder as we start to rely more on him blagging those international G1s. The French Derby would be a major bonus of course, hope one of his trio can outrun their odds.

Yeah I see no reason why he shouldn’t go there next, I don’t think he’ll confirm the form however.

War DecreeNo joy today. Looks like next port of call is Royal Ascot, might not be the biggest shock in the world if War Decree picked one up.

June 4, 2017 at 20:46 #1303514I thought the horses ran well in France today, could see one or both of Orderofthegarter and War Decree heading off to the US to tackle those three G1s that Deauville and Long Island Sound ran in last year.
Roll on Royal Ascot. Churchill, Winter, Caravaggio and Order of St George are all short price favourites, and Acapulco is in with a shout.

June 21, 2017 at 23:00 #1305479That’s a staggering stat. I know he has the ammunition but that is amazing.
June 22, 2017 at 04:18 #1305521Am I alone in really wanting to know what AOB was chatting to Princess Anne on the podium about after the remarkable Highland Reel won at Ascot because it was almost a shock to see him looking so animated ,expressive and unguarded in his manner.
I’m not a big fan of the multiple darts at the board approach at Ballydoyle in terms of numbers of runners but I’m increasingly frustrated by hearing the same old (albeit always gracious and polite) platitudes from AOB after the victories…really detracts from the sense of joy of victory that there should be to me…if his head is elsewhere other than wanting to be on TV at that moment then don’t do it.
