Now the rumour mill suggests that Burnham has a seat lined up in the Greater Manchester area. That looks risky to me, given what happened in the Gorton by-election and the local elections.
Bootle looks a far safer bet. Reform are not popular in the Liverpool region. Perhaps Dowd has refused to stand aside?

Neither are Murdoch’s vile rags. I wonder if the two are in any way related.
May 12, 2026 at 18:06 #1766613I think it goes without saying that Starmer’s the most disliked, to put it mildly, British political leader historically… his actions following the local elections are like …
Putting two fingers up to the public and saying “Screw you”
If his MP’s don’t remove him the public will come for them next.
good luck to allMay 12, 2026 at 18:25 #1766614Starmer’s crap but Truss was worse – and her popularity rating was even lower than his (-70).
More factual inaccuracy from the right.
May 12, 2026 at 18:43 #1766616I know the ownership of Sky TV changed several years ago but it often occurred to me that the principled stand so many people in Liverpool took against “The Sun” was rather undermined by the huge number of satellite dishes on the sides of houses, thus handing Rupert Murdoch far more money than his loss making newspapers ever did..
May 12, 2026 at 18:45 #1766617Kid he,s telling the public he’s staying to compete the job they elected him to do , I understand people not agreeing with it but you also can’t keep having people doing what the feckless Cameron did

May 12, 2026 at 18:50 #1766620Had to laugh just now.
ITV 18.30 news: ” Let’s go to one of Labour’s heartlands, namely Wigan”.
Heartlands, Wigan?!
Try Islington South or Bristol North West or any other Metropolitan middle class area.Labour abandoned their ‘old’ heartlands years ago. Took ’em for granted, to cosy up to the metro middle class public servants.
May 12, 2026 at 18:58 #1766622“Truss was worse”
Totally irrelevant.
‘Today’ and ‘Tomorrow’ is about THIS shower of a government, led by a lawyer, who’s out of his depth, and who’s supported by a cabinet out of their depth.
They’re devoid of ideas, havent implemented anything of note in nearly 2 years.
NO plan in that time, no vision, no strategy for growth, no plan to control welfare spending.
Running scared of their backbenchers, culminating in c15 policy U-Turns.A mess of their own making, with no vision or action to rectify an ever-growing serious financial and economic situation.
Bond markets call the shots and they see a treasury that’s maxxed out the nation’s credit card, with no hope of any 0% balance transfer deals.Their solution? Call in Gordon Broon, who sold off the nation’s gold reserves.
Incidentally, those reserves would be worth £40BN in today’s terms….yes, £40BN.May 12, 2026 at 19:05 #1766624“Totally irrelevant.”
You’re right, for a change.
The fact that Truss was even worse then Starmer is irrelevant to the point Kid was making: “I think it goes without saying that Starmer’s the most disliked, to put it mildly, British political leader historically…”
That statement is factually wrong.

Incidentally, those reserves would be worth £40BN in today’s terms….yes, £40BN.Of course Tory governments would never dream of flogging state assets.
May 12, 2026 at 19:34 #1766627Reform are not popular in the Liverpool region
I’m sure you’re aware but for the benefit of others:
Reform came second in Bootle in 2024 with 12% of the vote, admittedly a long way behind Peter Dowd’s 69%, which was down from 79% in 2019. Paul Nuttall – sometime leader of UKIP – also came a poor second to Dowd in 2015 with 11% of the vote.
Which suggests to me that although Bootle would be one of the least hazardous seats for Burnham to contest, it’s not a given he’d win given the swings to Reform last week, notably in not-too-distant St Helens, which to me on the other side of the Pennines would count as being in the ‘Liverpool region’.
I see one of the St Helens MPs has declined to give up her seat for Burnham, which is probably a good thing…for Burnham.
May 12, 2026 at 19:51 #1766628“St Helens, which to me on the other side of the Pennines would count as being in the ‘Liverpool region’.”
But very much in Woolyback Land.

Being serious, Reform did finish a distant second in Bootle last time and did do well in St Helens last week. But I don’t see Reform doing well enough to win seats in Liverpool or Bootle. St Helens is a little more detached and has some wards which traditionally voted Conservative until quite recently.
May 12, 2026 at 20:04 #1766629“Let’s go to one of Labour’s heartlands, namely Wigan”.
A place where Labour had to defend 20 council seats last week and lost them all.

May 13, 2026 at 07:36 #1766640“Reform are not popular in the Liverpool region.”
I think there is one seat on Merseyside that Reform will win at the next election: Southport.
The seat passed between the Conservatives and the Lib Dems between 1987 and 2019. There was a significant UKIP vote in 2015 which allowed the Lib Dems to hold on but that vote went to the Conservatives in 2017.
Labour won the seat for the first time in 2024, with the Conservatives in second and Reform in a strong third place. But Labour have next to no chance of holding the seat. Let’s just say that Starmer is not popular in the town now, to put it mildly.
May 13, 2026 at 11:14 #1766648I don’t think appointing Gordon Brown in his advanced years makes sense. This is just another example of Starmer’s inability to make rational decisions. But in his heyday Gordon Brown was superb. We should not worry about him selling some of our gold reserves – following the financial crisis started in the good old USA, ha ha, he saved this country from total wipe out. Now unless we loosen our dealings with the USA quickly we will find another financial crisis is just round the corner. Who will save us then?
