    With apologies to Talking Heads…

Just how leftwing is Burnham? He joined Labour Friends of Israel in 2015 and has yet to call Israel’s massacre in Gaza a genocide. He owes the reprehensible rightwing Labour Together faction something big, given that that faction’s Josh Simons stood down to allow Burnham to become an MP. He is (reportedly) a fan of that hideous rightwing racist, Shabana Mahmood.

Yes, this thread is a tad premature, given that Burnham is not yet Prime Minister, but (to quote Depeche Mode) it’s just a question of time.

Burnham is only interested in himself. Notice how during the by-election, his pitch was all about him. His branding didn’t even mention the Labour Party.

He is the sort of person who tells his audience what they want to hear. Right now, he has calculated that presenting himself as some sort of standard bearer for the Left is to his advantage. But that wasn’t always the case. In 2015, his pitch for the leadership was as a “centrist” and Blairite. Losing so heavily to the left wing Corbyn obviously stung.

I have encountered him a few times, in the Ship And Mitre pub in Liverpool. Plenty of Everton supporters gather there before matches. I have to say he gives off a strange sort of vibe. There is something odd about him.

I know someone who has worked for him, who interestingly assures me that Burnham used to drink his tea from a Liverpool FC branded mug. Which makes me doubt his much talked about love of Everton. How can you trust a man who doesn’t even know what team he supports?

The same person also once quipped to me that people can be divided into two groups. Those who like Andy Burnham. And those who know him..

I’ve never liked him and I’ve never trusted him. If he can renege on his commitment to the people of Manchester [something that I very much doubt Starmer would do] he can renege on anything. Can’t wait to see how he copes with the media turning on him. [If I sound bitter and twisted you bet I am…].

Starmer reneged on a whole swath of pledges (remember his “Ten Pledges”?) he made to the left of the party when he was running for its leadership. As soon as he became leader, his true (Labour Together) colours were shown.

I’m sure Burnham is going to veer to the right as soon as he has his feet under the desk, but will he go as far as Starmer has on immigration, for example?
