Last place again! Why do we bother?
It is easy for those who have never sat on a horse to be critical of jockeys. Horses are not machines and have a mind of their own. In my view the majority of jockeys are talented. Punters lose in the long term because bookmakers set the odds in their favour, not because jockeys are not up to it!
May 15, 2026 at 12:36 in reply to: How many tracks have you visited here and abroad? Checklist of ones to do #1766868In my view, the best racecourse in the UK is York. Best racing and the best facilities.
The only International racecourses I have been to are:
France – Longchamp
Kenya – don’t know the name of their racecourse (racing only on Sunday’s)
Hong Kong – Sha Tin
Australia – Melbourne, Sydney and HawkesburyWe must all pray that Burnham wins the by-election. If he doesn’t the country is well and truly doomed.
I don’t think appointing Gordon Brown in his advanced years makes sense. This is just another example of Starmer’s inability to make rational decisions. But in his heyday Gordon Brown was superb. We should not worry about him selling some of our gold reserves – following the financial crisis started in the good old USA, ha ha, he saved this country from total wipe out. Now unless we loosen our dealings with the USA quickly we will find another financial crisis is just round the corner. Who will save us then?
Betting on the horses, I have only had two winning seasons (defined as winning a decent amount). In one of those seasons I kept backing a 7lb claiming apprentice who kept on winning, often at high odds. At the end of the season I was convinced I had found a winning system. Alas not! By the end of the season everybody had latched on. The apprentice’s name was Ryan Moore.
I have been following racing for 60 years and in my view Ryan Moore is a GOAT. Without doubt the ‘greatest of all time’
The King’s speech will be critical. If the Labour Party’s MP’s don’t like it, Starmer will be gone in days. Alternatively, if they do, they will all rally around him. We live in interesting times.
Purwell, you have every reason to be concerned. In the 1950’s when I was young I asked my father how any population could support someone as evil as Hitler. My father replied saying, “it could easily happen here son.”
The only part of the country that has fallen for Farage’s nonsense is those who are under privileged and poor. This statement is based on May’s election results. Any sensible government could squash Reform by introducing a fair taxation system. After all when Income tax was introduced it was based on ability to pay
Starmer isn’t the problem, so changing the leader will not help Labour. The source of the problem is that Labour have continued to adopt devious Tory policies. The Tories froze the tax free rate in 2022 and reduced the basic rate to 20%, claiming they had reduced taxation. They hadn’t of course; they had made sure the biggest burdon was on the poorest shoulders. If you analyse the May election results you will find Reform won in areas of extreme poverty. People on low incomes cannot make ends meet; they are getting more and more in debt and do not know which way to turn. They see that the Tories will never help them and are disgruntled that Labour are just as bad. The solution is to get back to a fair tax system. After all, income tax was supposed to be based on ability to pay.
The solution is to increase the income tax free allowance to £18,000 per annum and increase the basic rate to 25%.
.I read that a Reform councillor has said there are too many Nigerians in his area and that they should all be used to fill potholes. I find it very sad that so many people are happy to vote for such a racist party. When I was young very few people would go near racist parties.
All I was pointing out is that it is too easy to blame jockeys. I agree Oisin Murphy is a class above Hollie Doyle, but behind Ryan Moore. In one race abroad I remember Hollie Doyle beat Ryan Moore into second. Does that make her a better jockey than the master? Of course NOT; she was on the better horse.
I know being jocked off happens to many riders, but that does not make it right
Blackcounty Kid, It should be perfectly obvious that the Birmingham Council will carry on as before. Left leaning councillors (Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens and Independent = 61 while the far right (Reform and Conservatives) = 38. That is unless Reform can persuade all the Independents to join them which is unlikely.
The problem is that Starmer is a lawyer, not a politician. Nobody believes what Starner says, because nobody can work out what he stands for. He reacts to events, rather than making sensible decisions and strongly defending them. For example, he has made life difficult for legal immigrants (who we need for care and the NHS) whereas he should hwve said we are tackling illegal immigrants within the constraints of International Law, while pointing out how we all suffer if International Law is abandoned. He only has to illustrate how the USA is falling apart. He was right to refuse to join the war against Iran, but he should have prevented Trump using bases in this country. Consistently is required.
Reform have done well in the Liverpool area, not Liverpool City itself. Reform will win in very poor Labour areas as the voters there believe their lives have not improved and want change. They would never vote Conservative and simply do not understand that Reform is actually far right of this right wing party. It is like turkeys voting for Christmas. In areas where the Conservatives had a massive majority Reform could do well and many of them are on the extreme right of the party.
As for a right wing coalition (Reform + Conservatives) after the next generation there is little chance of this. Left wing voters (apart from the very poor) will vote Liberal Democrat, while extreme left wing voters will vote Green. After the next General Election I I expect the order to be Reform, Liberal Democrats, Labour, Conservatives and Green. The most likely outcome would be a Liberal Democrat government, supported by Labour and the Greens. Even then the majority will be very thin.
Of course the above forecast is based on how things are now. Within two years Trump might be gone and the US will be in crisis mode thanks to his policies. People will realise the stupidity of voting for a ‘Trump’ party and Reform could implode. If that happens then Reform voters will go back to the Conservatives and poor voters will go back to Labour. We could have a very interesting outcome.
We don’t need a ‘balls up’ in local elections. Reform could do a lot of damage to local communities and will if elected. I hope the electorate see sense in time.
The main problem is our vile and biased gutter press. They gleefully report that Starmer apparently was given a free pair of spectacles from somebody but failed to report that Farage has just received a £5 million private donation from a foreign billionaire. I am told that one of this billionaire’s policices is that all Muslims should be deported from this country. So the £2 billion Reform will spend setting up an ICE type agency will spend its time deporting immigrants as well as Muslims
How could anyone vote for such a vile party?Today’s boost was Esna to finish 1st or 2nd 5/4 (was 8/11). Do these boosts ever win? Another one bites the dust!
