Agreed. I’ve never liked Aussie Jim as a commentator anyway, I think he’s awful. Nothing like Ouija Board’s "race of her life"

Thank **** for that lol. I thought Ouija Board was going to pick Shirocco up but thankfully for my sanity I think conditions just favoured the French horse a bit more and he kept finding a bit.

Decided the fact that there is still plenty of cut in the ground I’m having no bet in this. If Ouija Board wins I’m heading for the nearest canal. Pockets already filled with led just in case. ;)

The times would indicate there’s definately a bit of juice in the ground.

Ouija Board to turn over the favourite.

I think 3/1 was the tissue price last night. I wanted to hear the jockey’s comments on the ground before parting with cash. Gutted now lol.

I got stronger and stronger on Echelon as the race approached and guess what didn’t have a penny on. Is there anything more annoying?

Fantastic ride from Fallon, absolute magic. Can see money continuing to pour on Horatio Nelson no one rides Epsom better.

Looks a weak Oaks to me on paper. A group 1 winner but nothing else that gets you excited. Speciosa I think most people would like to see win because she’s from a small yard but I don’t think she’ll get home. To be honest I think you’d be as well off sticking a pin in and taking pot luck as you would be racking your brains for hours with this lot.

Tentative selection – Time On but with no real confidence, will keep my wallet closed for this one.

Surely a two horse race? Ace usually runs well but never wins, the others are leagues behind Shirocco and Ouija Board. A tough call but the conditions may swing it Ouija Boards way.

A very interesting race. Echelon makes a lot of appeal at 3/1 but not at 13/8. Conditions should be absolutely perfect for her, Stoutes fillies are flying and she has Fallon on board. Barely a negative. A penalty but I don’t think I’d be put off by that. has to go very close. Big danger could be Tarfah who is a filly I like and has already showed form that entitles her to go very close here. Musicanna has solid form but would maybe prefer a bit softer ground. I expect the winner to come from these three. Put a gun to my head and I’d choose Echelon.

Quote: from SirHarryLewis on 1:32 am on May 18, 2006[br]really………..not very stiff so if the likes of Lester Pigott was quick to realise Sir Ivor wouldnt get home at the Curragh.

But then you could argue that El Gran Senor got home better at the Curragh than at Epsom.

I dunno, one or two horses best at 10f have won the Derby but generally I’ve always thought of Epsom’s 12f as pretty stiff.

Visindar is 6/4 in some places isn’t he? :o

Sorry, but that is utterly ridiculous for what he’s achieved to date especially when he’s not a nailed on certainty to get the trip.

Chester is a course that is well known to playing to such strengths isn’t it. No matter how Hill’s had ridden the horse it wouldn’t have won today. That being the case I think he’s getting stick for the sake of it here.

I disagree. Chester is a course that suits front runners or promnant horses. I believe Mubtaker was wridden totally the wrong way.

If I’d backed Mubtaker I’d’ve expected him to be jumped out and make the running. As soon as I’d seen Hills’ "tactics" I’d’ve been yelling at the TV screen. Awful ride IMO.

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Agreed Aston the ride Hills gave Mubtaker was little short of a joke.

The horse loves being allowed to use his stride and gallop and is more than happy being prominant so what does Hills do today? Holds the horse up on a sharper track, makes headway for no reason at halfway to go prominant, I don’t think the horse knew whether he was coming or going. Whereas Aidan O’Brien knows what goes through a horses head and mentally manages them superbly, Hills today could’ve done nothing at all for Mubtakers mentality asking the horse to do something he was totally uncomfortable with. What the hell was he doing?

All Hills had to do was ride Mubtaker as he was ridden at Newbury. As soon as they’d gone half a furlong I knew Mubtaker hadn’t a prayer of winning today.

The Derby is still a great race.

Like anything though you’re going to get good and bad spells. Look at the 80’s – Shergar, Dancing Brave (unlucky loser), Reference Point, Nashwan, all terrific horses.

The Derby then went through a poor spell but more recently it’s picked up again with top class winners like – Lammtarra, Sinndar, High Chaparal.

The best three year old mile and a half horse usuallywins the Derby. In recent years though with a couple of exceptions the three year year olds just haven’t been as good as the best of the older horses. For me that’s always disappointing but it’s swings and roundabouts.

You have to say this horse was disappointing today. He had everything seemingly in his favour and was a big flop.

I was surprised that he wasn’t quicker away than he was after listening to Hannon’s comments, Lord Charles held the edge on him most of the way.

Just goes to show listening to trainer / jockey comments can prove costly. ;-)

I’m certain he was idling. He must have lost a couple of lengths drifting across the track as well. The horse does pretty much as he likes.

The pace wasn’t that quick early so for the horse to quicken the way he did off a relatively slow pace was pretty impressive to say the least. I don’t think the leaders were dying, the early leader finished third and the runner up was running on strongly after being prominant the whole way.

Quote: from cormack15 on 7:58 pm on May 6, 2006[br]I thought the way he won today suggested that a step up to 10F rather than a step down in trip may be on the cards. He’s bred to get 10 and it’s only his scintillating speed that has many doubting his staying powers. I wouldn’t be surprised, depending on how the rest of the O’Brien team progress, to see him tackling the Eclipse or somesuch rather than sticking to a mile.

(Edited by cormack15 at 7:59 pm on May 6, 2006)
Didn’t his dam win over 13 furlongs as a three year old?

If George was slower you’d be tempted to think a mile and a half might be within his range but as you say horses with that sort of speed just don’t stay. Interesting.

Probably a mile will be George’s optimum then again maybe he’s just a freak of horse and sensationally good.

Personally Sir Percy has Derby written all over him for me.
