Yes, Seagull,
I think this doing far better than most published betting theorists would imagine.
A very interesting thread.
Btw, do you ever bet in Baker Street?
Another ridiculous thread based on a personal attack on a man, who, not only has done so much for the racing game, but is a decent guy too!
Now look what you made me do: I’ve been sucked in to what will probably be yet another of the pointless slanging matches that sensible folk know we don’t need!
I’m reluctant to post here, as I think we’re going round in circles – like a dog chasing its tail – but here goes:
My opinion is that this forum has changed its character greatly. That may well be the problem.
Society, standards, ethics, and racing have all changed.
As an old codger, I find it hard to wade through some of the stuff that seems to pass as the " done thing" nowadays.
Perhaps, I’m just old -fashioned.Frankly, much of the stuff this year seems to me to be based on the style set by the buttfair forum. Maybe that’s "cool", I really don’t know.
My suggestion is that we all check out the various sections on this forum and then try posting in the relevant place. This may help avoid annoying those who don’t care for our subject matter or for our style.
Finally, I’d think that " chit-chat" would be a good corner for the compulsive attention-seekers, with perhaps a backroom for boring old farts, such as myself, who prefer the nittygritty of racing to all the shite and hype of media-style filler.
That’s the problem with being old ; we’ve heard all the bullshit decades ago!
I agree with Zippy that we could do with more good quality racing on the AW. Today’s Lingfield card isn’t too bad, imo.
Although I’m not a big fan of Arena Leisure, I get the feeling that they are not entirely to blame for any build up and overflow of dross. There are other factors, namely, the breeding industry, the BHA, and the British "winter" weather ( plus summertime floods and wash-outs, I suppose).
From my experience of it, the UK NH scene is mostly in the West ( inc Welsh) with a smaller hub in the North ( inc Scotland).
Bigoted enemies of the AW always say the thing is all being done for the bookmakers, with the implication that the poor old punter or, more accurately in their minds, the poor old racing enthusiast and connoisseur, has to pay for something unwanted.
Well, I find this confusing; even Laddies and Billy’s are finding their share prices down right now, so I don’t really thing shop punters care much what is on offer.
My guess is that live racing is to be actively discouraged in the shops with the realisation that better returns can come from easier means eg FOBTs, cartoons, bingo and all the other numbers rackets.Who the hell out of this lot – shop-keepers and customers – is bothered about opening up a venture that takes place miles away in some weather-exposed field?
Now we come to the nub: those few hardened souls who DO attend the AW- be it as punter or bookmaker – deserve all the credit and praise they can get.
These are REAL racing enthusiasts and should be respected by all who profess to like the game, imo.Spot on with HOJ there, Aaron! 6 lengths.
My place bet wasn’t bad, but I suppose the RF would have been the thing.
Form seems to be holding well this month, and you picked some nice ones.
Well done. Thanks, Adrian, for explaining about the expenses.
I know from the AW, that the incentives to go to the Middle east, say, are very tempting.
Some fairly moderate animals have made their connections some nice returns, even though they finished out of the first three.Perhaps the Australians will find the Ascot ground as puzzling as messageboard posters do!
I think a lot of the anti-AW moaners have never been near it. It’s much better live, on-course, imo.
February seems to be the month when form on the AW settles down. Plenty of favs are going in.
I’ll be in Tatts at Cheltenham on Gold Cup day, and, frankly, I don’t expect to enjoy the afternoon entirely. Good racing, but plenty of aggravation.
I’m happier at all the Aw tracks and at less-packed meetings in general. It’s just a personal preference thing, I suppose.
Anyway, if my selection today, Realt na Mara, trails in last, I may be joining the whingers!
I hadn’t realised that Ascot subsidise the expenses of overseas entrants.
Does the same thing happen for runners from Europe when they travel to Melbourne, UAE, or wherever?
Yes, I agree with AP and Ricky.
Btw, where’s the nearest train station?
I guess Liverpool Street will be the London station of embarkation.
Btw2, to all those who have trotted out the usual stuff about this being only for the bookies: how much have these bookies invested in the project?
I’m trying to understand the economics of the thing. Are the major investors working for the bookmakers or something?Cheekster knew! Well done.
Btw, which leg is it?
We don’t want PN pulling the wrong one.I hope all the KS people got a decent price.
A pretty awful thread, imo, mainly because there is a distinct lack of facts but plenty of personal jibes. Not a good foundation for anything constructive.
Seagull’s piece was informative, I thought. Things have changed a lot over the decades and I’m not up to speed on the present day set up in UK.
I thought that bankruptcy made restrictions that lasted for seven years, not just one.
Also, I’d wonder about the houses in question; presumably, he still lives somewhere and he still has at least one well-paid job.
All very strange, imo.And as so many here have been prepared to guess, I’ll do the same and suggest that the man was never poor in his life and he isn’t going to be now!
What he says and does means nothing at all to me and my punting; I’ve always totally disregarded him. However, for some reason, I’ve always thought that the poor ( not financially) fella was physically handicapped, and, in my day , we didn’t mock the afflicted, so I always feel sorry for him when I see him. He’s no harm.Anyway, he’ll be alright, I’m sure, and I wish I was just a pound behind him!
Just in passing and as a matter of interest, here are some figures for Denman and Kauto Star:
Denman: Win% = 92.31, LSP + £12.83
Kauto Star: Win % = 71.43, LSP + £6.60
Right now, I cannot find the Earnings quickly, nor the "Speed Figures".
These things are interesting, but I’m not sure how useful.
Just wondering a few of things:
How did he manage to get such big sums on?
Should he also sue the people who lent him the money?
Did he use the Exchanges?
Yes, I would seriously suggest that some kind of " earnings per start" criterion is used in the system.
When I looked at VDW, I didn’t find their way of doing it much help.
However, when just toying with figures for tonight’s racing at Wolver, EPS pointed to the following payers:
Semantic Witch, Terminate, Ermine Grey, Buster Hynoven, Blackheath and Maktavish.
They weren’t all winners and they weren’t all top on EPS, but they weren’t far off!I suggest that we give this due consideration. Perhaps someone can offer a good way of using the idea?
I agree, Welsh Wizard.
Southwell is much better in reality than it looks on TV. Some of those guys there know their stuff.
Thanks, Ginger.
I think it may be a very hard thing to prove either way with so many other variable factors involved.
Perhaps we’re flogging a dead horse here?
I found it interesting that in Australia they used the word " flogging" to mean stealing, and I’m sure that’s also true in parts of Scotland. The English slang equivalent would probably be " to whip" ( meaning to steal), whereas "flog" means to sell.
Not a bit of wonder that misunderstandings can arise, imo.
Not that good, Drawn.
The guy seems to get a kicking even when there’s no evidence to prove the urban myth(s) that abound.
For the little it’s worth, I followed the man right back from the time just before he joined Cecil. OK, I probably am one the " miserable losers", but the few bob I made from racing came mostly from the Stoute/Fallon years, so I’m hardly likely to turn my coat now.
