Having backed Sixties Icon for the Derby at 500-1 a few days before the race (takes a bit of doing, especially with Bet Direct ) I find it hard to believe that just a few months later he’s odds-on for another Classic. Red Rocks is massive each-way value at 7-1. He was in front of Sixties Icon at Royal Ascot despite finding the ground faster than ideal and has not finished out of the first three since his racecourse debut.
Shadow66, trying to make money by laying horses to a zero% margin and paying comm on winnings isn’t exactly easy. If I’m laying one it’s usually beacuase I’m confident that the horse will drift so I’ll lay it with a view to backing it back later. For example, lay £100 at 3.0 (2/1) and back £60 at 3.5 (5/2) – equates to laying £50/£40 (2.25, or 5/4). Fine in theory but often prone to going tits-up when the horse in question collapses.

"Trod on dog" sticks in my mind – not sure about the horse’s name but it was around 1989 (when I first got into racing) and I definitely remember reading that comment in the Sporting Life.
Stav, me and Lottie (as she insisted I call her) went for a curry after the gig – mint chicken at Spices on Ascot High Street, don’t know what made me choose that dish but won’t be ordering it again. Not a patch on my Texas spit roast after racing at Newmarket the other week (me, Charlene Spiteri and the drummer) – sorry that was sick.

Having spent yesterday banging my head against a brick wall at Ascot, a.k.a. trying to get a result at the Shergar Cup meeting (still haven’t met anyone who thought Tucker came second), I have to concede that the on-course market is in serious decline. I laid a £2,500/£1,000 Young Mick to an off-course firm but the next biggest bet after that was a £700/£100 each-way and the majority were £2 each-ways. Fortunately I bought the spread on how many times I would have to explain to Charlotte Church fans that "£2 each-way costs £4" as they passed me a shiny £2 coin (pint of weak Australian lager costing £3.20 in the other) – made up at 85. Roll on Cheltenham!
Whatever next? A Race for non-bent jockeys. What price it’s reopened?
Galway Plate…is it that time of year already….has Ansar won yet?
"When racing at Galway over hurdles or fences his record is: 1111511 (6-7), with the sole defeat coming in the 2003 Galway Plate when fifth by around five lengths (he returned 12 months later to land the same race)."
Having backed Etaala each-way (fifth under Dick Hills) I’d rather not dwell on this race, and just for good measure I backed the second and third win only at silly prices…doh!
I had a £1775/100 Sedge this morning on Betfair (SP 9-2 after being matched at 1.33 in-running) – that couldn’t bloody win could it!
LRM, I’m so sorry to hear of Daylight’s passing. It’s sad and bizarre to realise that I didn’t know his real name until now. I will always remember meeting him for the first time – when Amelia won at Leicester in June 2002 – I told him that I didn’t think she could win yet he still invited me for a glass of champagne in the winners’ room after the race. He was one of the good guys and will be sadly missed.
The only surpirse is that it took until Tuesday for the excuse to emerge.
Rory, one day you’ll be rich…and then I’ll inovice you
David it is. Just buy it, it’s very good :)
You misunderstand me Mr Brady. Paul Jones is something of a Eurovision wiz – he tipped Ukraine at 14-1 two years ago, Greece last year and narrowly missed out on 80-1 Belgium a few years ago. I’ve ordered three copies of the Cheltenham guide (‘cos I know he’s hard up) and have subscribed to his email service.
Definitely worth buying. I’ve ordered mine just for the Eurovision preview.
How about the "Best Mate would have won this with a half-decent ride instead of coming second when Mounty was on at 10-1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle"
It could be worse, he could be Godolphin – 250 expensive two-year-olds and not a good ‘un amongst them. Who buys the damn things and how do they keep their jobs?
