I wish Mackenzie and Harris were writing this one up…<br>Ellis Park on the Thoroughbred Times

Favourite bit is the ‘unwanted shade’ line.

"Trod on dog" sticks in my mind – not sure about the horse’s name but it was around 1989 (when I first got into racing) and I definitely remember reading that comment in the Sporting Life.

The racereader was less then generous in his comments on Muzher victory at newmarket last saturday<br>i quote ‘the mercurial muzher did well to win after doing his best to throw the towel in by carrying his head to one side and ogling the crowd.'<br>sounds like one to follow lol

I read in one of Nick Mordin’s books (at least I think it was him) where he is desribing the uncertain nature of horseracing when he states that there is a documented case of a horse being attacked by a wolf during a race!

My interest was sparked by the description of Feeling Better’s last effort in an amateur chase at Sandown, namely:

[i:13ajmmq2]”led 2nd to 6th, led 10th, devilishly[/color:13ajmmq2] interfered with by loose horses after 11th, cannoned[/color:13ajmmq2] into rail and unseated rider bend before next”[/i:13ajmmq2]

    He was ridden by the Reverend S Beveridge… <!– s:D –>:D<!– s:D –>

I had to go and watch a re-run of the race when coming across this from Liz Long’s form

    Liz Long
led 5f out, propped at loose geese on track, soon headed, weakened inside final furlong

The game 47yo Reverend has been subject of more than one pun since he belatedly took up race-riding this season. The form-book comment on his effort when partnering his own Fort Of Gold at Larkhill earlier in the year reads:

2nd when rider fell off 2 (soon rose Lazarus-like and walked about in the wilderness)

Lua’s Line when winning the Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Belmont for David Wachman, ‘pressed leader, led well over 1f out, drifted slightly after colliding with a goose 1f out, driven out’

There are loads from the Pointing field.

One which sticks in the memory went something like: "Facing wrong way at start, fence behind when eventually started, pulled up after 4th, rider apoplectic"

    Some great replies and…

Would you Adam ‘n’ Eve it – Feeling Better only went and won, without the assistance of his enthusiastic but seemingly eternally earthbound clergyman (but possibly with some other divine assistance, of course)!!!

    NV,

I’ve just searched the site for the original unusual comments in running thread, which did indeed feature a stack of pointing ones c/o Adrian, HJ and myself, but it doesn’t look like it survived a the postings cull. My error for not resurrecting it in time.

No matter, I expect we’ll find it in ourselves to re-post some of these asap – we’d fill a couple of screens just on Patrick Millington, untameable Welsh maidens and Audiostreetdotcom, I suspect!

There was one – for the life of me I can’t remember which one – in Racehorses of 1996 that said something like: “spooked leaving parade ring (probably due to crowd noisily celebrating Shearer’s Euro96 goal on big screen)”

And does anyone remember which horse was “chased to post with a broom” in Timeform Perspective around the same period?

The annual editions of "Hunter-Chasers and Point to Pointers" from Sale and Mackenzie were always eagerly awaited for some of the classic comments on the runners and I’ll have to dig through some of my old editions to unearth some gems.

One of the few that I can remember was about Urban Spaceman (who in his early career frequently unseated his rider ) :

"Tossed the rider into orbit in Maidens………………….."

Races at the Point-to-Point at Welbeck in early March this year had the footnote: [i:1bdxgcu3][b:1bdxgcu3]The open ditch was omitted in all races due to a mole infestation[/i:1bdxgcu3][/b:1bdxgcu3]

The first division of the Maiden at Black Forest Lodge in February had the footnote: [i:1bdxgcu3][b:1bdxgcu3]the Stewards enquired into the behaviour of Heathfield Flyer at the start; they cautioned his connections for rattling a tin in order to get him to jump off, which upset some of the other runners.[/i:1bdxgcu3][/b:1bdxgcu3]

I remember a comment in a Timeform annual about a horse called, I think, Singapore Road.

It went something like, "unless they start running the horse at more suitable distances beyond a mile, the best thing they could do with the fainthearted brute would be to shoot him".
