Its` a vaild point that NRWA makes about Thommo. I would
suggest that he`s the best poorly rated pundit. So, if we had
5 divisions of say Poorly Rated, Mediocre, Ambivalent, Good
and Sublime, would Thommo be promoted up a rung?

I think Jimbo flutters his eyes more than closes them. But that`s just me being pedantic or the TV`s on the blink.

In all fairness to the chap, It must be said that I admire his honesty, because the stats of his tipping service are for all to see or download on the TIMEFORM site. He doesn`t disguise the fact that last year was abysmal. Conversely, 2006 was a good year. But that wasn`t chucked in your face during his presentations. For me he brings a certain gravitas to the program and knows his onions. But that would make his eyes cry.

    Regards,

    Dave

PS I won`t mention the rugby as this is racing site, so there.

The free site I find most interesting is Marten Julian’s. Obviously, most of the stuff requires various renumerations, however, his journal is free. This well respected journalist never pulls his punches, and that is most refreshing. Sometimes, the old devil will whet your appetite with a potential piece of interesting gossip, but obviously for libel reasons leaves you wanting more. Just a like a Svedish-Nympho-in-Syrup…….the ultimate Treacle Tart.

    Hi Paul,

Actually it was Willy Hills adjacent to the Good Companions in sunny Llanrumney. I do remember the bookies in Greenway Road. I do believe when the Sporting Life was still in hard-copy circulaton that they would offer the forecast SP to small amounts. Some of the shrewd Llanrumneyites, a contradiction in terms, would wander over there for that purpose.

Predominately, I was a Goodies punter. You’ld get a better class of villain there. Off course, there was the odd down and out. One is already a seasoned forumite, and I’m sure he knows who he is………that’s right "TheWelshWizard".

    Cheers,

    Dave

Those were the days of the EXTEL blower service. 15 fellow punters crammed into the corner, by the only speaker hanging precariously, with a monosyllabic commentary sounding like it was being read off a ticker-tape. I feel a frisson of nostalgia sweeping over me.

Mind you the body odours of some of those 15 have diluted my romantic image.

Always thought POTOOOOOOOO was clever. Actually a son of the legendary ECLIPSE, which is another classic name synonymous with the turf.

I normally associated most Derby Winners with classic names, and then Benny the Dip came along.

Finally, the clever ones that can encourage spoonerisms with devasting results are worthy of mention. Stunt Kite, when they were fashionable, may have been a good one. Also, used to have a manager in our organisation called Michael Hunt. Insisted on being called Mike Hunt.

    Good Evening Kauto Star,

I, like you, am a newcomer to this forum. I do not see the problem in starting a similar thread to ones that have gone before. Surely, the user community is constantly changing and even a repeated topic will interest new users. If you’ve seen the thread before, surely you just ignore it.

Anyway, I like many, think the boy Spencer’s modus operandum is to hold horses up in the main. Therefore, surely, if you’ve studied the beasts style of running, and that style doesn’t suit, well don’t back it. However, if it is a hold-up merchant, then you have the man on top for the job. My point is, use his style to your advantage. Personally, i think he is an extemely talented young man, but could be much better with a variation in his tactics.

    Kind regards.

    Ravel,

Thanks for mentioning a suitable book title. Next time I’m in Hay-on-Wye I shall try to obtain a copy, or even E-Bay. ‘Er indoors has informed me that it’s my racing books or her. Hope she’s happy with her new abode………but talk is cheap.

Apart from the plethora of tragedies for the National Hunt aficionado, what about the dramatic career-ending run of Gorytus. Rated 132 as a 2 year old by Timeform (I believe), but the sad site of his obvious distress in the 1982 Dewhurst. A dark chapter in the annals of racing.

    Aragorn,

Did you mean British Racing, and not English. Are you not forgetting Chepstow, Bangor and of course a few tracks North of the Border.

Also, I do believe Jason Weaver may well be a Welshman himsellf.

Also, I believe his daughter, Franca, rode in the Ladies Race on the Ascot Diamond Day Card. If memory serves me right she may in fact have ridden the winner of one of these races, possibly in the lates 70’s early 80’s.

    Good Afternoon,

I sympathise and can relate to the addiction and social problems that arise
from gambling. In particular, It is not uncommon to see punters feeding these cash cows, oblivious to the whole reason why turf accountants were originallyl legalised.

However, what I find even more worrying is the plethora of Casino based sites on-line that are taking money that isn’t really your own at that stage i.e. credit cards. As sad as it is to see one capitulate in any Betting Office, it is normally with the folding stuff that was their own to fritter away. OK, I know you can draw money out on a credit card, but I’m generalising. My point is that in this country, UK, measures should be put in place to not allow credit card deposits, or tighter limits. As most people are aware, borrowing to the hilt is the slippery slope to misery, even more so when there is nothing tangible to show for your money.

PS Be easy on me as this is my first post on this forum.
