I have mixed views on JS, some races that you least expect him to win and his riding tactics are iritating some time. I think he is a great jockey and he cant win every race so no worries and i wouldn’t like to say wether i dont like his tactics or not.
ThanksSeptember 13, 2007 at 19:07 #114809Seb the Butcher had a go on Pairumani Princess at Wolverhampton tonight, with much the same end result. Is it incompetence or stupidity from the trainer that ensures she continues to be held up?
October 2, 2007 at 08:28 #5249Hi guys.
Please go easy as im new here.
<!– s:wink: –>
<!– s:wink: –>Just thought i would get your views on Frank as the subject tends to crop up alot when i talk about horse racing.
Without doubt he is one of the best jockeys around, but do you feel he gives his mounts to much to do? ? ?
Take Excellent Art for example. I do feel if he had got him up with the pace more as they came around the last corner, then he would have won. Frankie Dettori was very clever and actually got Ramonti into Excellent Art’s pathway so he couldnt get through. Jamie couldnt do anything as there was also a horse on his outside, so effectively, he was boxed in.
Now, i think that 2-3 seconds proved vital as Excellent Art was catching Ramonti at the finish line and given a few more hundred yards, i think he would have got up.
Not just this ride mind you, there have been countless others.
Ryan Moore will take a lot of stopping next season if he doesnt get injured like he did this season.
Your thoughts? ? ?
Thanks.
October 2, 2007 at 08:39 #117520Ryan Moore is riding very well at the moment.
Jamie Spencer is, or more truly could be, a great jockey but he does tend to make a lot of errors of judgement.

October 2, 2007 at 09:19 #117523This is a real Betfair Forum thread. The word ‘Frank’ gives you away.
October 2, 2007 at 09:57 #117526Zorro.
I’ve never been on Betfair forum in my life mate, was just trying to be amusing. Trying being the operative word.
October 2, 2007 at 09:59 #117527Zorro, you’ve lost me – why is a thread discussing a jockey’s strengths and weaknesses a "betfair forum thread"?
October 2, 2007 at 10:00 #117528Perhaps Ramonti is a better horse than Excellent Art, who perhaps gets found wanting for pace at a crucial stage of all his races?
October 2, 2007 at 10:23 #117530I agree with zorro, postings from the gutter again, it’s been covered a thousand times on here and other forums. Why does Ryan Moore always have to be brought into the argument about Jamie Spencer? If you think he’s no good and he isn’t what’s the problem with that. Maybe there are plenty who complain about him that are equally useless at their job. Why not just lay all his mounts if he’s no good.

Or perhaps Dettori has outridden Spencer at both Goodwood and Ascot. Excellent Art looked to be lacking for room rather than pace as Frankoe set sail for home imo.
October 2, 2007 at 10:32 #117532Ok sorry.
I have obviously ruffled a few feathers.
That wasn’t my intention.
I am new to the forum, a forum which seemed user friendly and where good debates take place.
Didnt realise it had been done before.
October 2, 2007 at 10:39 #117535Dont worry about them mate, they are just miffed because they can’t put up a proper answer. I can’t either, because I dont watch racing, but I’m not going to be rude about it.
October 2, 2007 at 10:39 #117536I think Zorro was talking more about the referring to Jamie Spencer as "Frank" (Spencer) as this is what the guy is called on the BF forum
Regarding the actual topic:
Jockeys who like riding in the hold-up style such as Jamie Spencer and Timmy Murphy will always get into trouble at some stage for leaving their horses too much to do. I think Timmy Murphy actually refers to it in his book where he states that it is more exciting to come from behind and snatch it on the line than to win from the front (I’m paraphrasing here obviously).
To some extent, that mentality IS a flaw as each horse needs to be ridden on its merits every time it runs and tactics should change depending on the pace of the race. Riding each horse to win with a slalom-like run in the last 2 furlongs is NOT going to do the trick every time.
Looking at the St James Palace Stakes again last Sunday, you’ld wonder would Excellent Art still have won if it HADN’T been 2 Ballydoyle horses in front of him when he got the gap? Not suggesting anything underhand, just that the other 2 jockeys in question didn’t make life as difficult as they could have done.
With regard to the QEII, I thought (to my untrained eye) that they weren’t going all that great a gallop at the start and turning for home, it did look like one of the first 2 could steal it by kicking on but hindsight is 20-20 vision.
Ramonti will still be underrated in Britain next time out IMO

Que? The front two were not hanging about – The time was about a second quicker than the other mile race on the card I thought? (Don;t have the RP at work so can’t check).. Ramonti was running out of gas at the end rather than excellent art catching him..
Spencer irritates me (Because he lost me money again on excellent art) but I still rate him one of the best jocks in Britain.
October 2, 2007 at 12:02 #117562Why oh why does Spencer have to hold his horses up stone last all the time, you can ride a hold up horse in midfield if you like, of course we all know he likes to be the cheeky boy, looks great Jamie when it comes off, but Spencer your not just riding for owners and trainers not to mention your own ego, but millions of punters aswell, you might just remember that sometime.
