Grassy’s post is a wee gem. Could not concure more as another middle aged git!

It used to be that when the country was in crisis we all stood to together. This country is probably in the worst crisis since the 2WW and all we get is political oportunism and press sensationalism. I am so tired of this Punch & Judy show that is politics. Politics is all now about playing to the press. The press now make the news rather than report it. I am fed up with some plonker standing outside of 10 Downing Street making it up as they go.

We as a country have no concept of real poverty.

To quote the wise one "the country is fooked, and there appears to be no motivation to do anything about it"

    Marble,

I did not intend to talk down to you but find your accusation that I am not being objective is laughable coming from you.

I did not say I was a labour supporter and I did not say Gordon Brown was my hero. I simply put up some defence of a man and the labour party where it seems nowadays to be the in-thing to have a go at them. As I said I do not like this mob culture and my natural instinct is to defend someone. Perhaps you should read what I said properly. I could be a liberal, SNP or BNP etc.

Whether this country is in a better or worse position is impossible to determine right now and a mute point. We might be in a better or worse position than any county but we might all be going down the toilet together. Gordon Brown might pull us out of it brilliantly and then Cameron will be worried? Whatever he does he will get criticised.

    Example: Quote you:

“And finally, if you think Labour are a leftist party & free of blame, why can’t the former Iron Chancellor guarantee all savings like the Irish government did? “

So he is being criticised for not underwriting nearly a trillion pounds of savings with British taxpayer’s money. If he does do it he will be criticised for doing it to late or squandering tax payers money. It would be refreshing to hear the Tories actually coming out beforehand and saying just what Gordon should do beforehand rather than sitting sniping from the fence and playing both hands. If they told us what they would do to get us out of this mess then I might be a bit more inclined to think they were more than political opportunists.

No one really knows if the Tories will make a bigger mess of things in the future. You are entitled to your opinion and vice versa. Just do not try to tell me what my opinion is.

    Marble,

Maybe you should take the time to learn just what Maggie did and you might understand why a generation of voters will never vote Tory. I still remember my 16% Mortgage rate, the miner’s strike, whole communities decimated by unemployment etc

This concept of left & right is redundant. Tony Blair took the middle ground ages ago and now both the Tories & Labour have policies mixed from all parts of the political spectrum.

This current situation is a global problem and little to do with any one country’s government. The financial markets are global. America has borrowed trillions more than it can afford and the international banks have fallen over themselves over the years to loan it to them irresponsibly. If anyone is to blame it’s the rich speculators (many of them good Tories) on the financial markets and all of us who took all the cheap credit thinking it would never run out.

The fact is that Labour is behind in the polls because they are a government in their third term blighted by loads of unpopular issues such as Iraq, the international economy etc. Its nothing to do with what the Tories have done. Indeed what have they done?? Cameron has just kept the Tories quite and benefited from the unpopularity of Labour. What evidence is there really that Cameron, a novice, would do any better than Brown? There is not any because there are no policies and indeed he was part of the Tory’s past financial mess. I have no confidence Cameron and the Tories are competent to get us out of this global financial mess.

The liberals are clearly the most consistent of the parties when you look at policies. But how many of the voters care about manifestos? How many voters know more than what is on the front pages of some tabloid? It’s all Brown v Cameron in some kind of presidential press hype. Its easy to try and blame Brown for everything in some kind of mob culture. I for one do not like bullying and when everyone is picking on someone I tend to look for reasons to defend them.

The one thing I am pretty confident in is that eventually the wheels will come off the Tory party soon. Unfortunately that might be after they are in government. Once they start to be pinned down on policies such as Europe and the Economy then all of the old personalities and grudges will come to the surface and they will self destruct. Most of the old characters are all still there along with a few new nutters. Cameron has done well to stifle them and keep them quiet for now.

In Scotland it really does not matter anyway. The Tories are a minority party here. However if they form the next UK Government we are looking at the break up of the Union in quick time.

    Good thread Young Fella

I am amazed I just cannot remember my first bet. I was well under age. Probably about 14.

Pendil was the horse that really set my racing heart alight. Night Nurse, Sea Pigeon et al. Glory days indeed! 8)

Betting wise it was the Saturday ITV7 that got me betting each weekend.

My dad was horse racing mad. He used to take me racing as a kid. Guess it paid for my student years.

I have this strange very early memory of a horse called "Homefield" (or something close to that name) winning at Ayr in the 70s. Was there with my dad who backed it because I picked it. Whatever it bolted about 20 lengths clear in the first few furlongs and was never caught. really impressed me. :)

Must admit that Kat was a pain in the ass.

Had a few quid on Sara @ 20/1 a few weeks ago as my only bet. Do not know why really. Just the rest seemed to be nothing special but she had been quiet till then and is bit of a babe  How sad am I

Michael will probably win it but it keeps me interested.

Been away for a few days. just back

Dave I am only pointing out the flawed logic. Perhaps Blair was just another parent genuinely scared about the MMR vaccine as were the majority of parents at the time. No conspiracy theory. As it turned out the chap who caused the whole scare was exposed as a fraud who made up the experimental results. Who knows what damage that caused. The truth is that there is no proven link between the MMR vaccine, this new cervyikal cancer vaccine & Autism.

This idea that the government have some strange agenda on the cervyikal cancer vaccine is quite frankly silly. The government just rely on their scientific advisers who are apolitical.

    Dave,

I think you are letting your anti-Blair feelings bias your decision on your daughter’s health. The two vaccines/issues are not related. The previous jab was safe and not proven to casue autism.

Dave the "MMR thing" was all down to a discredited scientist who forged his data. There was never any proven link to MMR innoculation and autism. Indeed many families have suffered by not getting their kids treated at the time.

Colin you mentioned the Tuesday night. Did not realise that the Monday & Tuesday were evening meetings. :P

By coincidence I am in Galway next Monday and Limerick Tuesday & Wednesday on business. Guess that sorts out what to do in the evenings.

    Outstanding!

To compare Thatcher on any par Churchill is just ridiculous. Churchill galvanised a nation to stand up against massive odds for years against fascism and fight for a nations very survival.

Thatcher picked a fight with a small country on the other side of the world without any proper consideration of the realities of what this meant. Luckily the British forces managed to save her bacon. Indeed as was pointed out earlier in this thread it was her government’s policy decision to pull out and not replace the royal navy boat presence in South Georgia/Falklands that created the opportunity for the Argies in the first place. It was not Thatcher that beat the Argies. Before the Falklands war Thatcher was the most unpopular PM ever. Even now she polarises opinion over many things.

Rather see them burn the money.

    Grassy;
Simon’s on about Churchill who was the mastermind of the Gallipoli campaign in the 1stWW. It haunted him all his days and did for tens of thousands of British, ANZAC & colonial troops.

    Nathan,

 I have been saying Lisa is a man since the program started! She has the balls in the house and I for one would not like to upset her. Wait till you see her/him loosing it.

It is getting interesting now especially as they all get interviewed by BB on their parts in the fight. Amazing the double standards Jen, Dale & Rebecca have against Mohammed & Rex. You could almost see the penny dropping as they realised that the public watching might not perceive them as they thought and they might have been wrong.

    :P

I always think that the strong views people have against Big Brother are akin to those of people who have given up smoking being overly anti-smoking. I cannot think of another programme where it is so fashionable to declare you do not watch it?

If you do not like it then do not watch it!

Personally my wife and I enjoy Big Brother.

Crizzy, the answer is that Italy or France should just have played better and score some goals. So far Romania have played just as well as either of the latter two.

However I cannot see the Dutch lying down here. They are playing for fun now and some of those in the "second" team will want to impress and get into the "first" team. Think they will still be too good for a Romanian team flattered by a poor France. Italy should win tomorrow and go through in second.

But what do I know. I though the Czech Rep were certainties against Turkey last night.
