Having just watched the re-run on RUK I didn’t realise just what a performance New Approach produced in the Derby he had a nightmare race in a lot of ways nothing seemed to go right for him yet he still won.

On reflection I can’t see Tartan Bearer reversing the form.

Wasn’t this the first time the horse has run drug free? Maybe that is a possible reason.

I can’t have Doctor Fremantle as a Group 1 horse. Sure he will always travel but he doesn’t have the necessary engine to win races at top level.

I think Tartan Bearer is a genuine Group 1 horse and the faster the gallop the better for him. New Approach however is going to be a tough nut to crack.

I’d be really surprised if we see New Approach run in the King George. Derby winners don’t seem to be aimed at the race anymore. He’ll probably run in one of the main 1m 2f races because dropping back in trip is the popular thing to do nowadays.

I think dropping back to 10f has been popular lately for stud reasons a Derby winner needing to show versatility. However New Approach was champion 2yo and has been second in two Guineas (one by a short head) so his versatility isn’t in question.

The ground at Ascot however will probably be too fast for New Approach to take his chance I would think.

I think firefox makes a good point lets not forget the horse among all the controversy.

I’d love to see a King George of New Approach, Soldier Of Fortune, Tartan Bearer and Look Here. Is it too much to ask for Peeping Fawn as well?

That would be a proper, serious King George. Thats what flat racing is all about bringing together the three year olds and the older horses, colts and fillies.

Bolger states the horse unlikely to go there I believe. Where have I heard that before? lol.

Listening to Bolger’s interview he said it was "the best" (winning the Derby) – not up there with the best but "the best". Quite a statement from a man who previously had more prefered races that he wanted to win.

I wouldn’t believe the man if he told me the earth was round.

Jim Bolger has said he genuinely believed that New Approach would not be running in The Derby, however he came out of the two guineas runs better than expected.

He also reaffirmed that leaving the horse in The Derby was a genuine mistake.

    That isn’t the issue.

The issue is that he said the horse DEFINITELY wouldn’t run as he prefered other options then he did a complete u-turn and ran him.

Had Bolger said the horse was "unlikely" to run but not 100% out no problem.

Had Bolger decided to run the horse and apologised for "non intentional misleading" then again that would’ve been something as people are forgiving.

As it is I think Doyley is right the mans arrogance and complete disregard for punters as left him looking like an a***hole and it hasn’t done racings image any good at all ………Again.

What RPR is that going to get then? 131???????

Be interesting to see but I’d expect it to be higher than Authorised last year.

Really? Just because the race was dominated by the first 3 in the betting? Authorized had the Derby field much more strung out last year (admittedly off a faster pace). Given how quickly the first 2 were pulling away, it’s a fair bet both can do better still.

Just looks a much stronger race than last year to me.

Is it fair to think Tartan Bearer may improve past New Approach given his lesser experience? Thought he ran a blinder and looked a very, very good horse.

You have to feel sorry for those people that laid the horse on Betfair following Bolger dismissing the Derby.

    Why?

Because they thought there was zero chance the horse would run and wanted to pick up some sucker money?

    Hahahaha!

    Who are the suckers now?

    Steve

Because they were told categorically that the horse was definitely not going to run.

That just isn’t fair and it isn’t nice and it certainly isn’t right. Once again the reputation of racing as a fair sport is tarnished,

By the way no I wasn’t one of them thankfully.

Anyone can be a "sucker" if someone wrong do’s them.

They have my sympathy for being well and truely conned (deliberately or otherwise).

Just been interviewed on BBC Bolger still doesn’t see what he’s done that is so wrong.

I have to agree he’s coming across as a real ******.

What a shame for the horse that the gloss has been taken off his brilliance by his trainers arrogance and lack of humility.

We should celebrate the horse but that sour taste just gets stronger.

Bloody Bolger without him I’d’ve had first and second  . Well its going to be interesting to see how that goes down.

Looks an above average Derby though IMO.

Thought Moore and Smullen gave my pair fantastic rides.

Not a strong feeling, and looks like quite a trappy Derby, so no doubt some kind of superstar will emerge and win by miles!

    For me…

    1st – Doctor Fremantle
    2nd – Frozen Fire
    3rd – Tartan Bearer

I hope something does. If I have one wish its that something emerges that becomes a superstar.

The most likely to do that is Casual Conquest IMO because he’s a big horse who is sure to keep improving. If he wins and wins well he could turn out to be special.

Thats the magic of the Derby the hope that a star is born.

Lets hope we don’t get a blanket finish or the race is won by something that has little chance of being anything but another "run of the mill" Derby winner.

From what Jim Bolger has said it was his decision, nothing whatsoever to do with the owners.

    Were those his words?

The idea that Sheikh Mohammed didn’t get involved in this decision seems incredible.

    Steve

I’m going off what was said on ATR earlier in the week. It was either Matt Chapman or Sean Boyce I can’t remember which forgive me, who stated that Jim Bolger had said that the decision to run New Approach in the Derby was his decision and his decision alone and not the decision of Sheikh Mohammed / Princess Haya or anybody else.

There has been no comeback on ATR that I’ve seen so I can only assume that Matt / Sean were accurate in what they said.

If I had to lay one I’d lay Dr Fremantle. This horse has been beaten in a handicap – this is no Derby winner. Also Ryan Moore chose Tartan Bearer weeks ago he obviously had no hesitation about which was the better. Dr Fremantle is running simply because Prince Khalid doesn’t have anything else following Twice Over’s flop at York.

    Famous last words?
