from that draw too ….
magnificent….he looked all over the winner before the turn
(terrible name though…..for reasons i would rather not explain)
May 3, 2008 at 22:28 #161437Very impressive indeed
Very sad for the connections of the second horse Eight Belles – horse has been put down.
May 3, 2008 at 22:29 #161438Very good performance.
The 2nd, the filly Eight Belles, unfortunately broke both front ankles pulling up and was euthanized.
Denis of Cork ran on very strongly for 3rd I believe.
May 3, 2008 at 22:33 #161439again another big american race ends in tragedy…. RIP Eight Belles
Awesome as the americans would say!
May 3, 2008 at 22:56 #161443I did not expect that. He looked a serious horse but drawing the carpark and having to come across and face up to a heavy speed duel and still beat them all off? It was Dubai Millennium-esque.
I do not know where the remainder finished – those of Pyro and Colonel John, Court Vision too. They were all burnt to a cinder and probably humbled into never running at Grade I level again.
Downright scary that was.
May 3, 2008 at 23:06 #161444Classic stuff, great triumph, great tragedy.
Congratulations, Big Brown and associates. RIP Eight Belles- gallant girl.
May 3, 2008 at 23:37 #161446She was too heart-strong*** for her own good. The owners got cocky and they earnt a Derby placing, but the filly is now lost forever.
Rags To Riches: never the same after the Belmont Stakes.
The fillies are simply not prepared for the physically demanding battles that take place between the boys. It truly is disappointing.
***Made up word I guess.

Pebbles? Miesque? Bosra Sham? Allez France? All Along?…..
May 4, 2008 at 05:53 #161462Why is it every single year America throws up a world beater at this time of the year?
This dirt racing is uncompetitive it must be (not that I know anything about it).
We have Guineas winners that scrape home yet the yanks seem to always have a horse that wins with ease.
It ain’t proper racing this sandy stuff – the turf thats proper racing!!
PS! Don’t bother arguing the toss as I shant reply have already dedicated more of my time than I should have to this second race discipline.
(PPS!! Watch some people bite for their lives

You’ve mentioned five horses only. And five of the best fillies and mares we will ever see.
There will always be rare occurrences of racing defying logic, but as a whole they are not physically capable of performing against their male counterparts. Otherwise … why run restricted filly and mare races at all???

You’ve mentioned five horses only.
The "…" implies that the list could go on.
The reason why there’s a sex allowance in racing is because it is recognised that fillies are weaker than colts and need that bit of help. As for the reasoning for mares’ only races, it’s quite obvious that they allow the best of their gender to be determined.
Your original assertion was a sweeping statement that fillies can’t compete with males. That’s simply nonsense.
May 4, 2008 at 10:44 #161489Oh for goodness sakes – surely the fact that Eight Belles beat 18 of her 19 opponents convincingly and was only beaten by a remarkably good horse, shows that she was fully deserving of her place in the field?
A good filly is more than capable of holding her own against the boys, and to call them ‘rare occurrences’ shows an unfortunate ignorance.
Russian Rhythm in the Lockinge? Marling in the Sussex? Balanchine and Salsabil in the Irish Derby, Ouija Board in the Prince of Wales and Hong Kong Vase, Alexander Goldrun in the Hong Kong Cup, Six Perfections in the Breeders’ Cup Mile and Prix Jacques le Marois, Passage of Time in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud, and did I hear someone say Makybe Diva?
I’ll keep going if you like, but I’m not sure it’s entirely necessary. Poor Eight Belles deserves only respect, not posthumous misogyny.
May 4, 2008 at 11:31 #161498I thought that mares allowances were introduced because it was more difficult to sell mares? Very sad to hear the outcome of the race, but what amazing horses the American Triple Crown throws up year after year.

I must admit that I hadn’t heard that. I’ll have to do some research on it.
May 4, 2008 at 12:20 #161504It may have been a conversation I heard ages ago about the mares allowance that was introduced before Dawn Run won the Gold Cup..it’s just the sort of thing that sticks in my memory, and could be completely out of context! Obviously if it was about nh racing it wouldn’t apply to American racing anyway..better get me books out…
May 4, 2008 at 13:20 #161520Another top class horse bites the dust in the states by breaking both front legs.
Dirt racing eh, dont ya just love it….
May 4, 2008 at 22:11 #161634Quite. How many of these superstars make it through the Triple Crown with 4 legs intact? On a decent surface he’d be a good bet to win the other 2 legs, but on dirt…..
