Ladbrokes have eased him from 6/1 to 8/1 after the Haskell.
Can’t imagine on that showing he’d get near to Curlin in the Classic (synthetic surface not withstanding).
August 4, 2008 at 09:50 #176002He has become what J. J. Pletcher likes to call a "J-A-H".
Just another horse.
August 4, 2008 at 16:58 #1760701m1f was not his trip but his class helped him.
Love to see Henry or The Duke do him in the BC Classic.
August 4, 2008 at 17:08 #176071What would you consider his optimum trip Neil ?
August 4, 2008 at 18:43 #176083He is 1m2f without question and at a pinch may get 1m3f.
The runner up in the Haskel certainly put the race to Big Brown and made sure he had to work.
Also Kent Desormaux is the only kink in the armour as yet again he was all over the place and maybe a change of jockey could help as i fully believe he was to blame for the horses flop in the Belmont.
Best thing to do now is keep him away from Saratoga and Del Mar and get him ready for Santa Anita as West Coast based horses always struggle on the Eastern side as happened last time the BC was held at Santa Anita.
Remember the Haskell was run at 6.15pm in the evening when it would be much cooler in the day and due to Western USA wanting good telly coverage the first race on BC day is 9.40ish in the morning on the Eastern side because of the time zones and the temperature will be a hell of a lot warmer.
August 5, 2008 at 08:49 #176132Sorry Neil but have you got your east and west the wrong way round?
August 5, 2008 at 10:47 #176144Allegedly, Rick Dutrow said that Desormeaux would be sacked if he didn’t go to the front in the Haskell so we’ll see if he’s true to his word (should Big Brown ever race again).
August 5, 2008 at 11:20 #176147Dutrow pleased with Big Brown’s condition
Less than one day after winning the $1 million Haskell Invitational (G1), trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. said Monday that BIG BROWN (Boundary) looked "great" as he left Monmouth Park at approximately 10:15 (EDT) for a van ride back to his Aqueduct headquarters. It is unclear what lies ahead for the dual classic winner.
"We’ll take a closer look at him later this afternoon and then worry about down the line", Dutrow said. "Once we see how he came out of it, we’ll start to look ahead."
After chasing pacesetter Coal Play (Mineshaft) for the first mile, Big Brown spent the final eighth of a mile reeling in the early leader as the crowd of more than 45,000 watched.
"Our operation was thrilled about Monmouth Park and the crowd yesterday," Dutrow added. "Hearing everyone give a big cheer for Big Brown was great. We couldn’t be happier."
August 5, 2008 at 20:23 #176216Sorry Neil but have you got your east and west the wrong way round?
Thanks for correcting me.
At least you know what i mean even if i am a bit James Willoughby about the analysis.
Basically, I think All Eastern USA trained horses will struggle at Santa Anita.
August 5, 2008 at 23:28 #176241You may be right, NW.
Perhaps a good plan will be to back good Californian horses at UK prices, especially in races where the European runners are afterthought contenders.
August 6, 2008 at 20:20 #176318The fact that it’s Polytrack must surely give the Euros a bigger chance this year, despite the rigours of travelling so far- I’d go as far as to say that if any of our genuine group 1 turf horses turns up and gives their running they’ll win.
