The owner (well, part owner now) named the horse after renewing a contract with delivery giant UPS, who are known as the ‘Big Brown’ in the States.

Apparently Big Brown’s jockey was sponsored by UPS yesterday, sporting branded ‘pants’ and wearing a rather prevalent branded cap in all post-race interviews.

That was a sensational turn of foot he showed there- the commentator seemed to think the early sectionals were run at a "sensible" pace as well! He isn’t bred to get the 12f in the Belmont, but given that acceleration if I were Ken Desormeaux I would be quite confident of putting him to sleep further back in the pack and conserving enough energy to ensure he gets the trip.

(BTW Scribbles, Molly Dutrow is apparently just 13 years old!)

13?? I’ll have to buy a pair of those sunglasses too then lol I thought she was 21ish.
It was the turn of foot that impressed me too. If Big Brown is allowed to simply lay up near the pace at cruising speed in NY, he’ll blow away any horse that dares to come near him IMO Dancing Brave is the only horse I can recall that had that kind of instant acceleration.

    ——————————————————————————–

I read that he was named “Big Brown” after a firm of couriers . If so, I expect it was also intended as a pun on “Big Red”, the nickname given to Secretariat by the woman who owned him, as that sounds to me the more likely reason for his name. Not that he or any other horse would be or have been quite in Secretariat’s class.

“Big Red” was also Man O’War – thus the nickname of the two best (perhaps arguably) American horses of the 20th century. Can only hope at this point that BB can be just as big.

I think the triple crown is at his mercy. I will be very surprised if Big Brown gets beat in the Belmont.

He could quite possibly be the best since Secretariat – or am I going overboard again ?

Mint Lane and Icabad Crane were heads apart in the Tesio. Casino Drive bts Mint Lane by 6 in the Peter Pan, Big Brown bts Icabad Crane 6 in the Preakness. Both unextended. Casino Drive bts Golden Spikes 10 in the Peter Pan, Big Brown has 16 on Golden Spikes on a line thro Recaturetheglory. These lines show the Japanese horse with the Belmont breeding is right in the ball park and as yet unextended, like no one save Big Brown. For me, this is no stroll, he’ll have to put out this time.

Kent Desormeaux is the key, having ridden Casino Drive in the Peter Pan, and as things stand I’m firmly in the camp of the Japanese raider – the fact that he’s a half-brother to the last two Belmont winners is a huge bonus.

What would be a better story, Big Brown winning the Triple Crown or Casino Drive becoming the third consecutive foal out of Better Than Honour to win the Belmont. Personally I’d like to see Casino Drive emulate her siblings Jazil and Rags to Riches.

What will the market open up as?

    Big Brown 2-5, Casino Drive 5-1 … then 4-1 … then 3-1?

We have been fooled too many times by the Triple Crown winner before they stroll into New York. Smarty Jones was a lock for the trio was my opinion back then.

You’ve got the rarest of races of 1 1/2 miles on dirt, a colt built for ridiculous speed who has completed 2/3rds of the job and another colt with the pedigree of a Belmont Stakes, the conformation and stride of a Belmont Stakes and the hacking up winner of the Belmont Stakes trial. And … he’ll be freshly challenging the race whilst Big Brown is in his final career start.

It’s not me hoping for something closer to evens about Big Brown, it’s me hoping for 6s or 7s about Casino Drive.

I watched Hughie Morrison being interviewed on ATR yesterday, and he was less than complimentary regarding the merit’s of Big Brown’s victories.

Though, I suspect it was American racing in general that was getting it in the neck.

He questioned the validity of Big Brown’s performances because the horse was running on …er, shall we say, artificial enhancements.

It’s no secret that Big Brown is trained on steroids. Morrison also made similar allegations about Takeover Target.

Interesting listening to the Michael Dickinson interview with Matt Chapman on ATR yesterday evening.

Dickinson believes that Casino Drive will prove the only stumbling block to Big Brown winning the triple crown. The rest of the field, he said, have no chance.

We should bear in mind that MD also said Denman had no chance of defeating Kauto Star.

If I was the chief bookie at the Nugget sportsbook, Myles, I’d go 1-4 BB and 7/1 the Jap challenger. You could name your stake. I’m no jolly backer but if I was, I’d hammer your 2/5 until you started to weep.

Have you ever seen Secretariat’s Belmont back in 73? A performance which defied the physics of traditional dirt racing and, alongside Sea Bird’s Derby, perhaps the most jaw dropping thoroughbred triumph of the last fifty years.

I think Dutrow is setting BB up for something similar. Don’t say you weren’t warned. :D

    Secretariat was a freak.

This boy may be something similar but I think the 3yo’s he’s up against are not that good. Imo Curlin will turn him over if they meet in the classic.

just watched Secretariats Belmont on utube; I assume he’d scared all the opposition away as there were only @ 5 horses in the race…will it be the same this year?

Thirty years is thirty years. Been a long time between drinks. And rest assured, it’s no fluke that the Triple Crown has been left to gather up dust year after year. It truly is a tough, tough ask for any horse these days.

The prizemoney these days – why not a field of 10 or more? Why not race for second or third and earn a few hundred thousand quid?

Casino Drive and one generation of Triple Crowns gone begging = I would be generous. 1-2 and if you rub me the right way, 3-5. Too young to be sitting on a curb drinking from a brown paper bag so stop waving your crispies at me.

Many great horses have been found out at the Belmont. Northern Dancer and Curling probably the most famous. Dermot took Go and Go over to win that classic. Why not have a go with Casual Conquest and surprise the yankees? One is coming over from Japan after only two runs to take on Goliath.
