Good luck to the great Michael Dickinson on his mission to get US racing switched to a safer surface.
He’s made an impact already and maybe the Eight Belles/George Washington/Barbaro fatalities will put the seal on it.
May 17, 2008 at 22:27 #164107Is this the best horse ive seen?
May 17, 2008 at 22:36 #164108Great song ‘Kentucky is my Home’…it’s the same tune as ‘The Working Class can Kiss my Ar*e I’ve got the Foremans Job at Last’
Was it really 5 lengths in 5 seconds!!!
May 17, 2008 at 22:38 #164109He was 1 sec outside track record…..and they were saving him
WTF?
May 17, 2008 at 23:01 #164112Big Brown was immense! If this horse doesn’t win the Belmont then i’ll be shocked.
BTW, who is the babe in the designer sunglasses that is always standing with Dutrow? Damn!
May 18, 2008 at 00:27 #164117I would want to hand time the race to believe he was only one second outside the track record given the (sensible) opening fractions of 23.8 and 46.4, and the fact that he was being eased a furlong out.
There’s no doubting that he’s a class apart in the States at the moment, and that both his Triple Crown victories have looked monsterous, but there always seems to be a real stand out at this time of year – Smarty Jones was similarly impressive, with superlative after superlative being thrown at him, but he was ultimately undone.
It’s from this point that Big Brown will make his name and we can only hope that he lives up to expectation.
May 18, 2008 at 00:54 #164119The locals are already beating their drums about Casino Drive sweeping past Big Brown with a furlong out at Belmont Park a la Birdstone.
Birdstone is no Casino Drive. I don’t think there is a better prepared horse on paper for the Belmont Stakes than the horse who wins the Peter Pan on course in a canter, with blood of two recent former Belmont Stakes winners, going fresh and aimed for the one-stop kill against the big hype.
Does it mean evens or close to it for Big Brown? I certainly hope so!
May 18, 2008 at 08:10 #164128Spectacular Bid, Pleasant Colony, Alysheba, Sunday Silence, Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Charismatic, War Emblem, Funny Cide, Smarty Jones.
Is Big Brown next in the list? Because that was the worst Preakness in many years.

I think that is his teenage daughter. She was given some attention in the build up to the race as it’s quite a sad story because her mother was murdered in a drug-related shooting when the daughter was only months old.

Saw the horse for the first time last night and he was mightily impressive.
Would agree with the doubters though; any horse that has the speed to win 2 out as he did is no laydown to get the extra two and a bit furlongs of the Belmont.May 18, 2008 at 10:22 #164144Myles, I’m opening my first spread betting account to buy the number of lengths Big Brown thrashes Casino Drive by. I’ll be pitching at ten.
I’ve only seen that turn of foot maybe three or four times in my life; (the Brave in the Arc and Peintre Celebre in the same race are two). I was dumbstruck for a good five minutes after and it’s a horse like this which reminds you why you started playing this game in the first place.

That was a sensational turn of foot he showed there- the commentator seemed to think the early sectionals were run at a "sensible" pace as well! He isn’t bred to get the 12f in the Belmont, but given that acceleration if I were Ken Desormeaux I would be quite confident of putting him to sleep further back in the pack and conserving enough energy to ensure he gets the trip.
(BTW Scribbles, Molly Dutrow is apparently just 13 years old!)
May 18, 2008 at 11:13 #164153Like a lot of people i was very impressed and it reminded me of Denman in the way that he took the lead and just left his rivals toiling and the fact he found a turn of foot on a dirt surface which is something you very rarely see in US racing.
As for the 1m4f at Belmont which is very much a more European type racecourse in its size and formation but BB won with so much in hand you have to say that he could get the Triple Crown easily but all to often we have seen good horses get turned over.
Be good to see if any of ours go over to take him on in the Breeders Cup Classic though

I don’t know about any Europeans (can’t think of any to beat him over 10f TBH), but my first thought is that the emergence of Big Brown may well effect the decision on where Curlin’s autumn target lies, with the BC and the Arc less than 3 weeks apart this year. Personally, I’d think it’s almost definitely lowered the probability of him turning up at Longchamp.
May 18, 2008 at 13:45 #164184I dont think Curlin was ever going to come for the Arc personally. They wouldnt want to risk his reputation. Would love to see Big Brown vs Curlin in the breeders mind!
May 18, 2008 at 17:15 #164216Jockey, Kent Desormeaux aboard BIG BROWN…

He absolutely dominated in the Kentucky Derby & Preakness Stakes,

2008 ??? ?????May 18, 2008 at 18:05 #164223I read that he was named "Big Brown" after a firm of couriers . If so, I expect it was also intended as a pun on "Big Red", the nickname given to Secretariat by the woman who owned him, as that sounds to me the more likely reason for his name. Not that he or any other horse would be or have been quite in Secretariat’s class.
