The loss of Grand Champetre has devestated both myself and MrsCs

He was one of our favourite horses and, quite honestly, I can’t get my head round making any selections for today.
I might well sit out the rest of the meeting

Can someone enlghten me as to where Hold On Juilio was from 2008 until 2011.
The RP shows it ran twice in 2008 and started at 200/1 and 300/1 respectively being pulled up in both.
It then reappears in 2011 wins a maiden hunter chase at Kelso then turns up later on that year wins off 117 for Alan King and is now off 145 and is favourite for a big handicap.
This must be one of the most improved horses in training if not the most.
But where was HOJ for 3 years?

Was bought from Ireland by Vicky Simpson. Backward with some problems. There is winning PTP form prior to Kelso which is not shown on the Racing Post site.

It’s much to her credit that the horse is now enjoying a successful chasing career. Patience and TLC.

MarkTT is spot on, it’s all down to Vicky Simpson, Alan King bought a ready made horse, I heard him on Channel 4 saying he was the real deal the day he arrived in yard.
Bigger surprise is that Quotico Des Poyans didn’t turn out to be just as good, Alan King has wrecked that horse by using hold up tactics, the horse hates to be led, it makes him sulk and he can’t jump with horses in front of him.
Quotica cost £75000, Julio £28000 at the same sale, there wasn’t much between the pair when they left Scotland but Quotica has attitude while Julio is a real Gent.

I like how you put in the 30 pence for good measure on your treble !

Odd money in that account, (£19.30) It does look odd though!

Thanks for the good wishes Darren

Lets hope we all come out of here with our pockets intact at least

    SORTED!!!

At the weights GARDE CHAMPETRE has the beating of the three horses that are shorter in the betting. (Explained earlier in this thread just incase anyone quotes the November race)
Against this is his age which in most disciplines would rule him out but this is Cross Country where normal rules don’t apply

What swung me was the participation of Arabella Boy in The Leincster National yesterday where he ran a blinder to finish second to Paddy Pub
Enda Bolger treats the festival Cross Country as his Gold Cup.
Arabella Boy’s run yesterday would have won this easily off his allotted weight of 10 stone. This surely can’t be disputed.
For Enda not to have run both tomorrow he must be very confident that Garde Champretre has been showing all his usual sparkle at home.
With Nina back on board they’ll be cutting every corner and with the old boy having his favourite jockey on board it seems impossible to visualise him being out of the frame.

Thanks Benny and a great ride by Tom Weston, jockeys mean so much in these races.

8/1 winner to a nice EW that’s paid for all my NRNB for The Festival and some

Watch these "free bets" they rarely allow both introuduction an free bet on the same horse, also beware time limits, rules.

Mrs CS spent an hour online last night on a helpline getting her free bet reinstated after it was declared "out of time" by one of the big four

Any Long Run supporters watching Sam "Wally" Cohen on Refic Des Thaix in the Hunter Chase yesterday must be very concerned about his ability after the shocking ride he gave the horse, totally misjudging the early pace.
Suckered into a "p*ssing contest" with the early leader who had obviously gone off too fast, in fact it looked for a moment, as they came past the winning post for the first time, as if he’d lost count of the number of circuits.
His mount predicably ran out of steam on the second circuit and was pulled up.
If he rides Long Run like that and goes head to head with Midnight Chase on Friday he’ll either hit the deck or run out of steam

Whitewash yesterday with both selections pulled up.

Fingers crossed for better horsemanship by the Tom Weston on ICE COOL BENNY in the 4.40 at Stratford who makes more appeal than the two market leaders who met last time out with Findlay’s Find again unseating his (experienced) rider and handing the race to Triffolet. Either could win this but Findlay’s Find who went off the 1-4 favourite that day has a 7lb claimer up today while he’s usually ridden by very experienced jockeys, a fact that combined with his jumping doesn’t instill confidence at a short price. Triffolet on the other hand beat nothing one Finday’s departed last time out and, while likely to get a place, and maybe win, is short enough in the betting for her form.
Ice Cool Benny on the other hand looks very good EW value at 8/1. Although he does have his own ideas about the game he’s proved his ability on plenty of occasions, he’s still only an 8-Y-Old and he’s got a top pilot on board.

We shouldn’t forget that Hold On Julio is a Scottish horse who, like many of us before him, went down to Englandshire to work

If he runs I givr Magnanimity a big squeak in this. Ground and trip should suit – his jumping is clearly the achilles heel but well worth an ew point at 20-1.

I expect much more from him this season than he delivered. I fancied him as an ew squeak in The Gold Cup before his last two races. Somethings wrong, that’s not the same horse he was last year

Mrs CS who is usually quite shrewd had £25 EW AP @ 100/1 for The Gold Cup before The Lexus, there was a free £50 bet (new a/c) involved in the offer (Hills) so she hasn’t really lost anything :D

The Horse that I am really keen on here is Hold On Julio. The only thing that stops me short of thinking he might be the best bet of the meeting, is that his jumping looks sketchy at times. Admittedly he has never looked like he was going to come down, but he definitely clouts the occasional fence and at times I think he jumps flat.

He is very unexposed, and for a 9year old he has done very little racing, point to point aside. He was put up another 11lbs for his recent win at Sandown (7th Jan) but I still think the handicapper has not anywhere near caught up on him.

As I said, in the Sandown race he chested through 2 fences in the early part of the race, and went through the 4th last too, albeit he didn’t look like coming down. After the last, the way he absolutely pulled clear of the field was so impressive.

In his previous race, also at Sandown (5th Nov 2011) he did the same, jumped not too bad, but certainly not inspiring, however it was again after the last that he again, in a few strides, completely destroyed the field. Both races were wide margin victories (9 lengths & 11 lengths), which is impressive considering he was level jumping the last in both. The last race in particular was a very decent race, and he ran away from some very good horses.

Obviously it’s a worry with a large field and the Cheltenham fences. However, if he takes to them, and I’m sure Alan King will have been doing a lot of work on his jumping, he is a very good bet at 13-2 with Corals (6-1 general). I think he is worth the risk and he gets my money.

From memory it was the first railway fence that he got wrong, after that it’s hard to get on an even stride till they leave the back straight. (I haven’t re-run these yet)
I’ve no worries about his jumping, he’s got neat feet and a great sense of balance, he looked a hell of horse in points up here and went up the stiff hill at Kelso at a real lick so we know he goes on undulating left hand tracks, we also know from there and Sandown that the Cheltenham hill will hold no fears.
I doubt if the handicapper is remotely close to catching up with him, this time next year the current price could well look like stealing sweeties from a pram.

Rubi Light twice the horse he was last season – only beat about 3 lengths then, bet of the week at the odds for me.

That’s what I’ve been thinking for several weeks but after watching a few re-runs of his races I’m worried by his jumping.
The way he gets his front legs over a fence doesn’t have the look of natural fencer to me but more of a worry is he way his head goes down as he lands over a fence. he wouldn’t want to do this too often at Cheltenham.
I’d be interested in any other opinions on his fencing as I’m loathe to write him off just yet

grey dolphin…..Agreed re Chapoturgeon and for a different reason (although I agree re distance) and I’d put a line straight through Cloudy Lane on form, not good enought but also as their jockeys just aren’t experienced enough to win a race like this, ditto Monkerty Tunkerty although he looks a decent recruit.

I feel Salsify might suffer for the same reason although he’s also too inconsistent for my liking and I don’t think his fencing will hold up for 26 furlongs.
Also those riders with an allowance can’t claim it in The Foxhunters

This years race is going to be run at a breakneck pace which will suit the top riders with a built in clock, Mark Wall, JT, Robbie Mac, Nina, Katie Walsh et al
