    I think that is him.

As I said, he was a "face" at jumps meetings for years, with his flat cap.

When he turned up on RUK I couldn’t believe it.

He is a nice guy. Has he always been a journo? How come RUK dont use him anymore?

Aren’t journos and tipsters just there for the masses? Serious punters should do their own research and make decisions based on that. If you follow what a journo writes and tips up then dont you deserve everything you get?

Just an opinion, so dont curcify me!!! But I have to say I gave up reading them years ago. All that matters to me is what I see trackside with my own eyes and how I interpret that.

Based on the distance Twist Magic finished in front of stable companion Hoo La Baloo, one can argue he ran up to form.

I think the poster is right to say Twist Magic is probably overrated, and this is not the first time he has disappointed. He was talked up at Ditcheat as a horse to follow last season, and they have always thought highly of him.

Considering Twist Magic put Mansony firmly in his place, on ground Mansony would have probably preferred, I think the race has a farily solid look to it.

Tamarinbleu reminds me a little of Northern Starlight a similarly diminutive animal whom the Pipe yard improved immeasurably from a low of 80 over timber to a career high of 141, and who was at his best when given an uncontested lead.

I have just rewatched the Ascot race and Twist Magic ran right up to form with stable companion Hoo La Baloo.

Also, take Tamarinbleu out and an 11l beating of Mansony would have scribes writing Twist Magic victory speeches already.

The blinkers do seem to have brought improvement from Tamarinbleu this season. I also think the front running style suits a small horse who gets intimidated in a pack.

Often when a "talking horse" gets beat, peeple make excuses for them. Personally I think Twist Magic has it all to prove now, and with Voy Por having proved himself around Cheltenham twice, he rates as banker material unless the ground is soft/hvy – in which case Nickname and Tamarinbleu become the ones to concentrate on.

Zoso I accept I am aftertiming, as I said on my first post.

I usually find with King that when they know they have a good one at home it gets seriously backed early and goes favourite. Which I suspect is what you half expected to happen with Quizzene.

Good luck in the future with your strategy, hope you win.

    Keep us posted.

I never knew Ref Point won the same Sandown maiden as Dancing Brave.

Also, did my ears deceive me, or did Wink Gulliver finish in behind Ref Point that day? Going on in later life to finish 4th in the Mildmay of Flete in 1991?

Erm, I am a bit surprised Zoso you are justifying a losing tip?

I cant say I have seen this too many times on a forum (if at all).

Now, if you are justifying your means of deduction, then fine, you have made a number of points that may be true over time.

However on this occasion the animal you stated should be 4/6 was beaten fair and square. In your intial tip you failed to acknowledge the favourite was getting a hefty 4 year old’s allowance and this coupled with his experience over hurdles were compelling reasons to avoid Quizzene.

Also, as I previously stated, King’s fancied horses are usually backed heavily. This hrose wasn’t.

The bet you should have had was a place on the Exchanges which presumably paid about 4/5? However your e/w was a loser, however you want to dress it up.

I thought house prices in a lot of northern towns and villages had rocketed, and that this "north south divide" of the 1980s was a thing of the past?

Anyway I would put the following in:

    1) Tony Blair – because the proper authorities seem unwilling to indict him for war crimes in Iraq.
    2) Alistair Campbell – for his role in the above.
    3) Newcastle United – for being delusional (see my thread in the Lounge).
    4) The Countryside Alliance – igorant morons who give humanity a bad name.
    5) Richard Hughes – always guaranteed to get the tactics wrong on a fancied animal.

No worries Mikky – and if you go back to his arrival as a player back in 1982, average home gates were 17,276!!!

So not only are they deluding themselves that they have some sort of right to occupy a top 3 position, they are also deluding themselves that their support is as passionate as some parts of the media think.

The true test of a club’s support is when they are relegated. Man Utd passed the test it in the mid-70’s. Leeds are at present. I also feel the West Ham support are also loyal in times of lower division football.

Newcastle remind me of Chelsea. Now they have money they make out they are a "big" club with a big history. However until Mourinho joined Chelsea’s silverware gains were almost as sparse as those of Newcastle. In 1989 their average home gate in Div 2 was 15,957. In 1983 it was as low as 12,672 (the time when Ken Bates famously bought them for £1).

As a Sunderland fan I also know that my club are often put on a pedastal. This is due to their "Bank of England" tag in the 1950s, and the big home gates they attracted during the 1973 Cup run. I dont put Sunderland up as any more worthy of a Top 3 position than Newcastle. In fact both clubs need to get a grip. Sunderland should never have sacked Reid, and have been almost as adept as Newcastle in sacking managers without giving them a chance to build a long lasting player infrastructure.

    Hi Mikky,

According to my stats NUFCs average home gate the season Keegan joined as Manager 1992 was 21012!!! Still a far cry from what it is today!

    Good thread this.

I kinda think Gordon Brown/Alastair Darling know they get loads of money from the punters via the bookies. If the bookies lost all the time the government would get less and less. So the maintenance of this status quo suits Dowing Street fine.

The bookies over time have seen less and less of their profits generated from racing so they feel aggrieved that they still pay so much to the government via the levy which is then given to racing.

The owners/trainers seem to live in a cloud. They provide the spectacle, but could just as easily do so on South Shields beach as Royal Ascot. The rich state of racing in this country is provided courtesy of bookies and punter alike.

With the FTSE-100 today on a 9/11 esque dive, and all the signs a global economic recession is upon us, racing could be in for a tough time in the next few years.

beckster I take it you work for or know the Nicholl yard well.

As I just said on the Noland thread, I think the injury is the key here. Having spent time and money getting him back to racing health, they dont want to risk injury at Cheltenham this time around – better to target a QM in 2009 than an Arkle in 6 weeks, so soon after his comeback.

Aftertiming here, but the fav was getting an awful lot of weight to make up for his inexperience, and the race he ran at Lingfield was again some potentially useful types.

Also usually when flat horses with form over 1m 6f go hurdling they tend to need 2m 4f or further, and dont have the basic speed to win over 2m.

Finally I find when the King yard "expect" one it is backed off the boards.
