“You’re already rich, Ben, your postings exude a perpetual wealth of happiness and positivity, sir.
Last night was a Eurovision forum blast, IMO.”
Why thankyou Ian, you too yourself!
Similar to CAS I hadn’t watched the eurovision in years but had good fun watching it last night, maybe it adds to the enjoyment when you don’t have to sit through it all on a yearly basis.
Agree with most that Norton is hilarious, sadly no Terry Wogan but don’t think you could ask for anyone better as a replacement, those interactions between the hosts were so cringeworthy it was painful though.
May 15, 2022 at 14:48 #1598189I ended up with a loss
did make a profit on UK top 10 when they were a bigger prices but should have ignored my son in his underestimating the jury vote for Ukraine, he did say they would win the other vote and even without the jury vote the other vote was probably high enough to win it anywayGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
May 15, 2022 at 15:08 #1598201I know marginally less than F all about music.
Fortunately for me I do know that Eurovision voting is seldom purely about the music and often about politics, especially in extreme political world scenarios.
So I was with Ukraine.
I feel for the purists, the true music aficionados, but in this life we need to bet with our head, not our heart, on what logically is likely to happen, not what we want to happen in a utopian world.
That said, I nearly fainted when France gave the UK “douze points” – I never saw THAT coming!
It was like cantering into the lead at the second last – and almost falling!

May 15, 2022 at 15:21 #1598207Just spoke with my sister-in-law down in Wellesbourne (near
Stratford), she’s taken in a lady from Ukraine who will be staying
with her. Absolutely brilliant, I’m very proud of her taking this on
at 74 years and with many problems of he own. She, Svetlana, wanted to
go to the local church and the minister asked my SIL to introduce her.
The whole congregation stood up and applauded. Some things just make you
feel good.May 15, 2022 at 15:25 #1598209‘Agree with most that Norton is hilarious, sadly no Terry Wogan but don’t think you could ask for anyone better as a replacement’
He’s more than capable of coming out with a few witty lines (missed the hand gesture one, brilliant as well) and does the gentle mocking and sarcasm at the political voting well. You can tell he genuinely loves the contest though. Seemed like he was speaking from the heart about Sam Ryder’s performance at the end too.
May 15, 2022 at 15:53 #1598211I prefer Graham Norton to Terry Wogan because he actually loves Eurovision. I think one of the reasons we did well last night was that, for once we actually embraced what Eurovision was all about because of Ukraine. I just don’t get the popularity of the Spanish song though, which epitomised everything I dislike about the contest. The Moldova vote was interesting in that it went blue across the board on oddschecker so someone somewhere must have known which way the peoples vote was going. Pity it didn’t place first 4 though. None of the songs I liked did anything.
May 15, 2022 at 17:14 #1598227Is Sam likely to be in the top ten tonight ….I hope so

May 15, 2022 at 18:18 #1598233I don’t think they update the chart until Friday HDLG, he’s at no 78
at the moment. Hopefully by Friday he should make a move.May 15, 2022 at 18:24 #1598234HDLG, the UK singles chart has been published on Fridays since 2015, so there will be a bit of a wait to find out.
I suspect TikTok views or some other thing I don’t understand is more important nowadays!
May 16, 2022 at 08:35 #1598256DAZzling early prediction by the Davies phenomenon on this one !
“GOOD CALL ( in a Fluff Freeman voice ) and Greetings Euro pop pickers you’ll need big shades like me
for this upcoming Spanish entry zig-a-zag – Must be Moulin, Rio, and the back streets of Cuba all rolled into one and FLASHY -just tie the women in the house down – and what a package : nothing like Daz – All right and stay bright !I took the air for 45 minutes after my one meal of the day so missed the British entry. Nice songems this year though and Norton attracts the yoof element – I gave myself a treat at the end : a Jacob cracker with a sparse smear of butter and a cup of herbal. Turned in at 1230 and amazingly slept a full 12 hours ( one toilet break at whatever time – I never look )
May 16, 2022 at 15:21 #1598288Don’t know how some can under-estimate how political Eurovision is.
Not sure if there is anywhere that gives points from the public vote of all countries, but they did give how the public here in the UK voted who are as political as anywhere else:
12 points Ukraine
10 Poland
8 Moldova…The three most involved in the fight against Russia.
For sure the UK were second overall, but that had a lot to do with the Jury vote. The people of Europe’s votes did not have the UK as second or anywhere near.

Full results breakdown here. UK fifth overall in the public vote, got points from 34 of the 39 countries. Entering a decent song in a song contest gets you votes, who knew?

May 16, 2022 at 19:10 #1598305Of those of you who think the political aspect is so important, can you give a previous example of where the winner was a “political” winner, and who would have been a more deserving winner that year?
I still think this year was exceptional in this regard.
May 16, 2022 at 19:13 #1598306Some on this island like to think that the rest of Europe is crying into its pilsner and pinot grigio over Brexit and stuff. The reality is that most people couldn’t give a flying foxtrot. 3 of the 5 countries who gave us zero aren’t even in the EU. We’ve been doing badly for years regardless.
It was widely considered our best song in a couple of decades and it went on to deliver our best result in a couple of decades. Funny that.
As I understand it, he also did a lot of work promoting the song and getting word out there. I suspect the big fans of the show appreciate that. For a long time we’ve treated it with contempt.
May 16, 2022 at 19:20 #1598307I would like to think I didn’t aftertime as I made my strong view clear in advance of the event.
As I already stated, politics has always played its part in Eurovision – reciprocal 12pts arrangements have gone on for years as both the late Terry Wogan and Graham Norton have pointed out – but never more so than in an extreme global political scenario like this year (a point I also already made to be fair).
In short, a good song will definitely get you more votes.
But being invaded by a global superpower with a malign leader and bravely resisting will get you a whole lot more – a winning result, in fact.
