I don’t actually disagree with any of that Ian. The Ukraine sympathy vote was always likely to prevail this year.
It’s more the assertion that politics is normally so influential in determining the winner that I disagree with.
My only prediction posted beforehand was that I thought the UK would do considerably better than usual, which was based on my view that the political angle is overstated. I know it seems contradictory when there has just been the biggest political winner ever, but I stand by this view!
May 16, 2022 at 19:59 #1598316Fair enough and – as already stated – I had a massive “WTF??!!” moment when France gave the UK 12 points!
They displaced Ukraine as favourites briefly and it was something like 5/4 UK and 11/8 Ukraine for a few minutes.
I wasn’t feeling quite so cocky at that moment!

You were well in before the event Ian…
I aftertime myself a fair bit so my post to ginge is a bit hypocritical but I also post when I get it wrong like I did with Ukraine so feel justified to point out to ginge his after speechGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

Exactly. There’s a political element to some of the voting, of course there is, but nothing much has changed in the UK over the last few years. If everyone hated the UK before, little has happened in the last year to make that change.
May 17, 2022 at 00:50 #1598343I’d have to disagree with that Richard, I think that the UK’s very visable
assistance to the Ukraiane would have brought a good few round. It’s
obviously the biggest story on the go over the past year, so I think
that’s a substantial change. The UK and US have probably given the
greatest assistance to Ukraine and I think that made a difference.Last year’s song, Embers by James Newman wasn’t the best song there,
but nil points?. I don’t think there was too much European love.May 17, 2022 at 06:46 #1598348I’d imagine the average (if there is such a thing) European attitude to Britain is this: “Arrogant lot, still think they’re a cut above the rest of us because of WWII, conveniently forgetting they’re an island, don’t even want to be part of us any more, but, remembering 1939-45 and fast forwarding to today, they’re still leading the way in not having it when a dictator goes too far so I guess they’re a good crew to have on your side at times like this. Give them 12pts in Eurovision – but nothing else!”

The songs from second to about sixth or seventh were mostly decent efforts. Serbia’s was nuts but they aren’t near the top for their humanitarian efforts so people must have liked it. Spain perhaps* helped by prominent display of the singer’s arse.
I come back to ‘it helps but it’s not everything’.
*almost certainly
May 17, 2022 at 10:19 #1598352Plenty of fair comment IMO on both sides of this argument….to be fair!

Have you read page 1 of this thread, Nathan?
Or any previous Eurovision thread come to that?
If you’d like to check, I’ve said about Eurovision being a political popularity contest both this time around and for many years now.
Hardly aftertiming.

May 17, 2022 at 19:26 #1598398What’s clear is that, while aftertiming is the most heinous crime of all, ancient beforetiming isn’t much better as everyone forgets what you predicted so you can choose to only remind everyone after the event if you got it right.
The optimum prediction time window is, of course, when I did it.
So I get all the kudos for tipping an, err, 8/11 winner which didn’t even hose up in cold blood (big douze points for the UK scare along the way).
I’m still best, though, and basically Eurovision 2022 was won by ME.
