Wow, a race that really lived up to the hype and both horse gave their absolute all in a fast run race with Shiskin despite not jumping as well just stayed on the better at the finish.
A bit of a disappointing race as the two big guns for whatever reason didn’t turn up.
The best race of the day from top drawer milers with little in it and Baaeed getting 3lbs but he certainly looks worthy of the claim he’s the best miler around and on pedigree 10f looks within his scope. I’m sure PP will be sent lots of nice mares.
Dettori’s comment about McMonagle was out of order.
Nice to see Space Blues get his 7f G1 win as he had to miss the race last year and the year before. It seems they may take him to the Breeders Cup.
Heavy ground so no real surprise to see a shock winner but in the conditions on the day Torquator Tasso was the best horse while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th were no surprise. I doubt the winner would uphold that form on better ground but well done to connections.
I’d like to see HL win it and become the first St. Leger winner to do so and put that hoodoo to bed. It’s usually a strongly run race so on heavy ground stamina will come into play but it is a very strong looking field.
It ain’t perfect but I’m just glad itv racing exists and is showing the Arc today though I can understand the mute button is useful at times but that’s no different for any sports coverage with the endless waffle from pundits.
Who knows but AOB’s comments about St. Mark’s Basilica being the best he’s trained seem to be geared towards hyping his potential at stud now Galileo is gone rather than reality.
October 3, 2021 at 13:18 in reply to: 50th anniversary today of Mill Reef’s stunning win in 1971 Arc How great? #1562201It is always a matter of opinion but for me Mill Reef was a brilliant Arc winner and his Timeform rating of 141 makes him the best English trained winner of the race a pound clear of Dancing Brave.
I’ve no idea why this race is still a G1 never mind referred to as a “classic”.
The paddock chap Ken Pitterson made me smile when he said Frankel was the best looking horse he’s ever seen. While he’s arguably the best racehorse ever and certainly the highest rated having seen him in the flesh at Newbury he is by no means the best looking.
ITV racing is great for the sport but they have too many pundits, too much waffle and not enough time devoted to the stars of the sport, the horses.
Imo it is better if G1s are shared across more racecourses so I don’t agree with giving Ascot yet another one or York.
William Haggas had this to say with regard to his 7f specialist Sacred who won the Hungerford Stakes.
“Seven furlongs is the worst trip to have a good horse at – it’s a pain. There is one Group One and four Group Twos, three of which fall in the same month. So you can’t do them all – well, Jim Bolger might! There’s then the Park Stakes, and that’s it. So it is a bad distance to have a good horse at, but that’s the way it is.
He perhaps needs to check the calendar though as only two are in the same month, the Hungerford and City of York which are only a week apart and he seems to have forgotten the Challenge Stakes. He has a point though in that they’re all relatively close together.
It is early doors for this race but the one chink with Snowfall is she’s yet to take on the colts and she doesn’t get all that much weight from the 3yo boys in the autumn.
I think the stewards got it wrong and were mostly persuaded by O’ Donoghue doing a much better job of arguing his case. The initial intereference when Simple Verse barged Bondi Beach was too far out to effect the result so it is not relevant though Atzeni was guilty. The stewards allowed O’ Donoghue however to make that incident relevant.
The second incident and the only relevant one was caused by Bondi Beach leaning on Simple Verse and O’ Donoghue kept his whip in his right hand and made no effort to straighten Bondi Beach so the fact Simple Verse then leant into him is no surprise at all so I don’t see how she is the guilty one. The other factor is Bondi Beach still had time to get back up if he was good enough but he wasn’t. Simple Verse’s connections are appealing and I hope they are successful as the best horse was first past the post.
The Juddmonte can throw up a surprise winner. Golden Horn beat The Grey Gatsby by the same distance as in the Eclipse so it looks like he isn’t as good as many thought he was. Arabian Queen ran out of her skin and although headed briefly stayed on and won well and obviously hadn’t read the script.
Not sure what Gosden will do with GH now as he seems to be saying he is ground dependent and the autumn isn’t usually the best time of the year for a fast ground horse, similar comments apply to Gleneagles.
An amazing achievement and he must be an exceptional horse, but then he does have Brigadier Gerard in his sire’s pedigree.

Amazingly Secretariat still holds the track record for all 3 legs of the US Triple Crown.
The last horse that could and should have won the English Triple Crown was Sea The Stars.
