No Jim JTS either :(

However it’s good to see Matron and others still around.

I’m not a fan of boxing but I really like the 24/7 specials HBO produce. They convinced me to actually watch Mayweather-De La Hoya. That was non-PPV and I won’t pay for this one (I save my money for wrestling) but I do hope Hatton wins.

What really interests me is the business of the fight. The Mayweather-De La Hoya fight exceeded even the higher expectations and pulled in, if I recall accurately, over $160 million in revenue. This fight won’t do that much business but I believe it’s already made $10 million in ticket sales and, win or lose, Hatton has the biggest pay day of his life coming. Good luck to him.

Watching Up In Flame, in whom I had a share, finish third at Leicester in a seller or claimer. I forget which. That was lots of fun. Young Kenny winning the Peter Marsh, I think, at Haydock is another good one. It was gutting when he died. I really liked the Looks Like Trouble Gold Cup win as well.

As a fellow Liverpool fan, I wouldn’t mind one of these:

You could probably find a nice but inexpensive frame and you’re away.

While I generally like to question horses like this (and I’ve yet to study the Gold Cup result), Kauto Star appears to be something really special. Not sure whether it’s the horse or the jockey that has a slight lapse at the final fence in these races but, that aside, a really good performance.

Already strikes me as a better horse than Best Mate, to whom I never really took. It’ll be very interesting to see how he’s placed next season by Paul Nicholls.

Exotic Dancer is tough horse – maybe there’s better to come, too?

    Overall, good fun race!
England should be strong, strong favourites. Croatia deserve respect, although I don’t think they have the squad depth to match England. If they qualify from their awkward group in the World Cup, then they’ll look even tougher.

The issue with Russia is travelling. They still look rubbish at it – it’s not hard, surely? In Moscow, though, they are pretty tough I think. Israel were unbeaten in their WC Qualifying group if memory serves. Or lost once to France. England should take four points from them.

Andorra, Estonia and Macedonia are teams England ought to beat everytimes. Maybe they’ll drop two points in those games.

Of course, if Big/Fat Sam is appointed, my analysis might change. England would probably draw more games. Curbishley? Why? Pearce? Doesn’t want the job, he claims and McClaren? No. What if we excluded this season? No.

But with any of them I think England would come through this group. Might be a bit tight mind.
This is an interesting debate. Nick Griffin believes that, in Britain at least, people with ‘white’ skin colour are superior to people with other skin colours. And then, I think he believes, that within the ‘white race’ able-bodied people are superior to disabled people.

Basically, people similar to him are ok.

Griffin should broaden his mind. But he won’t, he’s stuck in his thinking. And his thinking is that ‘white is right.’

There is one change of thinking within the BNP – they like to wear suits now, rather than combat boots.

Griffin has a right to say most things. But he should not incite violence or hatred, for that is hugely detrimental to society.

When someone says "he should be banned from saying these things" of someone like Griffin they – barring the incitement of violence/hatred – shouldn’t have their way. If people dislike what someone says, they can verbally fight back. Not just say ‘ban it’.
Maybe the time will run on the TV screen one day – I assume it doesn’t on UK Racing, I don’t know for sure as I don’t subscribe.

I’m looking forward to this simple addition…if Channel 4 are prepared to drown out parts of the screen with Turftrax, surely they could stick the race time in one of the corners of the screen.
I find people’s voting habits fascinating and I can’t understand why people feel awkward about it (as many seem to). In America, admitting to being Liberal minded is a source of great hilarity in some areas (i’m a loony leftie on Fox News…or leftie loony…). It seems a bit off to admit being a Tory voter in some places. It’s pretty much evil in my house. No one votes Tory in this house. No one says nice things about them either!

If you vote, that’s grand – that’s what I feel. If you don’t and have a good reason – grand. If you don’t because you can’t be arsed – that’s kinda dodgy. (Incidentally, my brother attempted to sell his vote – money to charity – on Ebay earlier in the week. That’s incidental to ‘apathy’ rather than ‘not arsed’.)

    Ian,

Billy Bragg is – they said on Have I Got News For You – voting Lib Dem this time around.

Considering he’s staunch Labour, I think his vote is an example of one that is wasted. The attitude of The Mirror is to vote Labour (despite their previously strong views over the war) to ‘keep the Tories out’. This is a sell out.

Tactical voting is a means to an end right? Your seeing the bigger picture?

For me the rules are simple, vote for the party in which you believe. If there isn’t one – and there isn’t for most people – vote for the party that comes closest to your views. For me that is Liberal Democrat. By voting to keep, or get, the Tories out you’re looking to give power to another party – locally and nationally. Well don’t bitch when that party does something you don’t like. You helped get them there.

I’m not about to become a Liberal Democrat member but they at least represent some things in which I believe. And if they screw up, I’ll take some responsibility as I helped them with my vote. I hope you don’t vote tactically but you can do with your vote what you want, pretty much.

    51 – Liberal Democrats
12 – Green Party
5 – Labour (New)
4 – UKIP (WEKIP)
-30 – Conservative

Can’t believe UKIP managed to score 4. I’m tempted to vote Conservative out of sympathy…alright I’m not…

As expected for the Liberals, the mainstream party closest to my views.

Don’t panic if UKIP make your top two or three with the Greens – you’re not a walking contradiction. Just a clean living, patriotic kind of human. I guess the UKIP score is coming from a desire to be connected to Europe in the way we are and to keep the pound.

Also, the website has made judgements on the UKIP view of some of these policies. So there’s more room for inaccuracy I think.

Mesh, it’s good that racing brings raving Tories/UKIP’s and raving Liberals together.

Out of interest Mesh, do you think of yourself as having a tough choice between Conservative and UKIP?
I did really, really badly. Some stupid mistakes although the "She" and "I" question (which I got right) is pretty silly. Why do you need to go into that sort of detail when you can use the word we.

Anyway, I’m going to hanged my head in shame…

Having not followed artificial-surface racing closely in recent months, I’m finding myself struggling to pick winners.

First off, I have an unfavourable impression of Lingfield. There seem to be a large number of races (particularly middle-distance races) that have ridiculously close finishes. When the horse in 8th or 9th is beaten only two to three lengths, it must inflate beaten horses speed ratings at the track.

Are there fewer races than I think with such close finishes? (and I think there are a lot by the way!)

Also, I find a lot of races have several or more contenders and that I can’t choose between them.

Basically, I’m struggling at all three tracks to pick winners. Artificial-surface racing is my favourite code – it’s how I became interested in racing in the first place. But I can’t get a hold on it now so if you guys could help me out with some opinions I’d be very grateful.

    Rob.
