Nixer,
If you regard me as a sour graps Azertyuiop fan, you’re wrong. I am a Well Chief fan!
Just because I don’t agree that it is conclusive that Moscow Flyer is the best horse of the two doesn’t mean I have sour grapes.
Firstly, if you think Azertyuiop is at his very best at Sandown I think you are wrong. It’s not as if he can’t run at the place, just that I think he’s better elsewhere.
Secondly, criticising Ruby Walsh is mistaken, I agree. I assume he was riding to his orders. But I think there’s a valid case for leading earlier with him – not to make Moscow Flyer fall, just to utilise Azertyuiop’s ability to travel. Azertyuiop is not that good on the run-in, he doesn’t have the strength of finish that Moscow Flyer has. So I think they would be better off making Moscow Flyer chase them on the run-in rather than the other way around (or rather than getting into a straight battle).
And the ratings, ah the ratings. Moscow Flyer has raced Azertyuiop three times and got a higher rating twice, obviously falling the other time. So you can use that argument if you want. Or you can say that (RPR ratings here) Azertyuiop has twice beaten Moscow Flyer’s highest ever rating.
But both times were in handicaps, in level weights races Moscow Flyer and Azertyuiop have both run to a 176 – making them equal in that respect.
They are not a long way apart and I don’t believe it is certain that Moscow Flyer will beat Azertyuiop in the Champion chase.
Nor do I think it is certain that either of them will beat Well Chief, although that very much depends on how Well Chief runs in between.
Hmm…I haven’t heard of some of these bands…i’m out of touch…i’m only 19!
Ratings are part of the excitment for me. I get enjoyment from looking at the form almost as much as from watching the race. That is how I feel and, as this is a public forum on horse racing, I’m going to post about it.
Be critical all you want, I don’t just want the drama of the race, I want something afterwards as well.
Rob.
Ratings are part of the fun for me. They aren’t wholly reliable and can also be misleading but I enjoy it as part of horse racing.
Today’s race doesn’t confirm that Moscow Flyer is a better horse than Azertyuiop to me. It confirms he’s better at Sandown but it doesn’t make him unbeatable against Azertyuiop.
I think tracking Moscow Flyer and trying to pass him 2 or 3 out is leaving it a bit late. Moscow Flyer has the stamina to keep going and is strong on any run-in it seems. Azertyuiop could do with going past him earlier in the race and making it tactical. Even then Moscow Flyer will have the stamina to make ground on the run-in but I think it would give Azertyuiop a better chance.
Well Chief has run really well and, like I said, I’m not sure Sandown is as comfortable for him as Cheltenham.
I don’t agree that putting Azertyuiop ahead of Moscow Flyer on their overall career ratings is nonsense. But that doesn’t mean that, when they meet, Azertyuiop is a better horse – just means he’s gained a higher rating against other opposition (in handicaps in this case and those ratings don’t neccessarily transfer to level weights races).
Rob.
Not convinced by the form yet, although I’ve not looked at it thoroghly. Firstly, the Racing Post Rating shouldn’t be any higher than 176. If the RP handicapper comes up with a higher rating, he needs to consider – is this really the best race Moscow Flyer has ever run?
Moscow Flyer has run well and his stamina was impressive. Certainly stronger than Azertyuiop who didn’t look particularly comfortable to me from some way out. When Azertyuiop wins, over fences, he does it clearly. No messing with a half-length here or there, the shortest he’s won by is 5-lengths (at Exeter this season).
If Moscow Flyer is fit at Cheltenham, I would favour him over Azertyuiop on the run-in. Makes me wonder whether they should go for the lead earlier in the race, try to beat the others before the run-in.
Well Chief ran a good race but I don’t know by how much he improved. I’m not convinced Sandown is the ideal track for him but he’s run very closely to two Champion Chase winners. Martin Pipe will probably want to win with him before the Champion Chase and I think he’d have a good chance in March.
Stamina was important today I think with Moscow Flyer having more of it than Azertyuiop. Well Chief could probably win over further but I think lacked a bit of experience today.
I’m not certain what ratings I would give yet but a 174 for Moscow Flyer might be right.
Hi Artemis,
This is a really interesting thread with information on tissues and ratings – one of my favourite threads.
Thank you for putting the time in to keep it going.

Hunting with dogs was the ban in Scotland, hunting wasn’t banned altogether. Apparently hounds are allowed to be used to push foxes towards people with guns – it is illegal for the dogs to kill the foxes but the foxes can be shot (although not by the dogs…).
The Burns Report didn’t give an opinion on whether hunting should be banned because it wasn’t designed to. Its aim was to look at the arguments, not judge them.
I think the legal argument is something to do with privacy. If hunting is regarded as a private pastime then banning it might infringe on human rights but it seems doubtful.
Mozzie? Mo’? ‘scowie? etc. etc.
It has to be said, Azertyuiop shouldn’t be hard to type but when you’re in full flow it can be irritating…

I guess that answers the question, Azertyuiop won’t win the Champion chase because he’ll get whooped by Moscow Flyer in the Tingle Creek.
Whooped might be a bit strong but if he does get beaten, that doesn’t mean he can’t win in March. Tuesday’s performance was quite strong in terms of form and a good one but I’m not convinced it was Azertyuiop’s best performance so far. Nor am I convinced that we have seen his best performance.
Just on the Edredon Bleu age argument, I know he was resurgent last season but he hasn’t actually won over 2 miles since he was 9. Now he can last 3 miles whereas in 2000 he struggled. He’s lost speed and the Moscow Flyer age argument is ‘how much speed does he still have?’ or thereabouts. ÂÂÂ
There’s no reason to assume that Moscow Flyer has suddenly slowed down but the argument is valid.
Acned? Student? Frittering? Whilst I do have a few spots I would hardly call it ance. I burst them before they get out of control. As for being a student, that is a cruel allegation that is not strictly true (although it will be in about a week). As for frittering, well, yes, I do fritter a bit.
You will not get away with you partially true allegations Turtle. I am tempted to turn you upside down on a sunny day but that kind of action is rather cruel. So instead I’ll just call you big nose. Big nose.
Normality was left on the doorstep when the question Is Zorro married to a Turtle? arose in my mind. Normality was the like the one that wasn’t carried – the final answer didn’t add up. Turtle married to Zorro? I believed it too and my excuse is being in a daze from the postings on this thread. The effects of reading the words written here are perhaps similar to playing dizzy dragon’s…was that its name? The game where you put your arms out, spin around, stop and try to stand still. Slight to severe nausea, maybe actual vomiting, and a strong desire to do it again. ÂÂÂ
I agree with Ian, this was Gamble at his best. Gamble’s work ought to be forwarded to BBC4 where an in-depth analytical documentry could follow.
Gamble has created a new form of escapism.
In answer to the question should Persian Punch be retired? I remember saying yes and giving a couple of reasons why. That was before last season. I was proven thoroughly wrong.
The Goodwood Cup stands out as an image. Persian Punch was so strong that day. It was good to be wrong!
