I think Francesca got the job due to her popularity in Australia, especially presenting for Melbourne Cup. She mainly took the role of paddock presenter, like role taken by Sally Ann Grassick in paddock today.
Maybe she is not right person for jump racing. But it is quite amusing to find out how different opinions it could be in different places.
I think this race makes Larry’s name.
That is Larry Collmus, who is based in USA and called many Triple Crown races for NBC. This is his first time to call a race run on the straight.
Originally, Alistair Cohen from South Africa called all Dubai races this year. But Alistair cut his contract short due to some arguments with Emirates Racing Authority.
https://www.thoroughbredracing.com/articles/5809/rancour-mic-dubai-race-caller-heads-home-saying-larry-collmus-lined-world-cup/Below is the interview with HK Cable TV back in Sep 2022. It mentioned SDS could not come to HK in early 2022.
According to some reports, SDS would like to move to HK in early 2022. But the Covid protocol was too strict to get him on board.
In terms of money, he gained more than in UK but interestingly he just found himself in trouble in stewards’ room.
Last Sunday, he got himself banned for 3 HK racedays and fined HKD$60k. It is 7th (!!) time he got suspension. Today, he lodged appeal on this suspension (https://racingnews.hkjc.com/english/2023/03/21/appeal-jockey-s-de-sousa/).
I believe his main problem is that he cannot keep his mounts running straight. Also, there were some misjudged rides from him. One example is Sixth Generation. SDS won on him in Feb with a nice run (replay in https://racing.hkjc.com/racing/information/English/Racing/LocalResults.aspx?RaceDate=2023/02/05&Racecourse=ST&RaceNo=4) but next time out, SDS changed tactics and ran too fast in early stage (replay in https://racing.hkjc.com/racing/information/English/Racing/LocalResults.aspx?RaceDate=2023/03/01&Racecourse=HV&RaceNo=2). Sixth Generation will run again on Wed (Race 6) but SDS obviously lost the ride.
He still needs some improvement.
Racing TV put Irish Racing live again on Youtube:
Don’t forget that he spent a decade in a racing jurisdiction without 2 mile races.
In fact, only 3 1.5 miles races over there in a season.
“What is trip?”
“2 miles.”
“What?”Probably the conversations in stewards’ room.
I think this is another Tommo’s classic:
Thanks for explanation.
Ignored her OR.
According to JRA website (all in Japanese), The race was run on Turf then Dirt.
(芝→ダート)
芝 is turf in Japanese while ダート is dirt (derived from English pronunciation).
For the jump races in Japan, they are run in the inside track with obstacles and then turn into home straight on turf or dirt (depending on the racecourse).
In JRA’s website, there is a page on their 10 JRA racecourses (https://www.jra.go.jp/facilities/). Below is the course description of Hanshin Racecourse where the race in the video was run:
https://www.jra.go.jp/facilities/race/hanshin/course/index.htmlI suspect that riding after the line is some sort of schooling at racecourse given that the main target is Hong Kong Vase next month.
Racing Post had a report last week stating the prize money issue in UK:
https://www.racingpost.com/news/insight/prize-money-how-do-other-nations-fund-such-bigger-pots-than-britain/491643This has comparison among major racing jurisdictions.
Good for them to make it free to view.
The Queen Mother Memorial Cup (Group 3 Handicap) over 2,400m (one of the 3 2,400m races in HK season) will be run tomorrow. Racecard: https://racing.hkjc.com/racing/information/English/racing/RaceCard.aspx?RaceDate=2021/05/02&Racecourse=ST&RaceNo=7
Only Russian Emperor will run in this race.
Berlin Tango showed some promise in his last start over 1,800m at Happy Valley while Arthur’s Kingdom finished last over 1,600m last Sunday.
Berlin Tango:
https://racing.hkjc.com/racing/information/english/Horse/Horse.aspx?HorseId=HK_2020_E120Arthur’s Kingdom
https://racing.hkjc.com/racing/information/english/Horse/Horse.aspx?HorseId=HK_2020_E194They were bought for HK derby (2,000m or 10 furlongs) which is restricted to 4yos only and worth over 20m hkd (around 2m pounds). Obviously neither of them can handle the fast ground in HK.
Races over 10f+ are limited in HK. So I think they will end HK career without any victory.
Steeplechasing,
In HK racing papers, the runners with big body weight changes (+/- 15 pounds) are marked in different colours for indication. General punters will take note on this and try to find out the reason, like first run after a long rest or missing trackwork for some days after last run.
I believe releasing body weights data actually benefits the punters using data models. I believe body weight data is one of the data used in those statistical models.
You may refer to the rules of naming a horse in the link below:
https://member.hkjc.com/member/english/horse-owner/ownership-journey/owning-your-horse.aspx
HKJC would not accept “Names appearing in the Stud Book of the horse’s country of origin”.
HKJC states that they will check the new name with Weatherbys for Gold Mount’s case. However, It does not state if such horse can revert to original name.
Anyway, I think the owner of Gold Mount would not have the old name back. He just likes naming his horses with “Gold”!
