If anyone gets the chance, watch the replay of the Al Quoz sprint (1.15) just now in Dubai.

The commentator (don’t know his name) mentioned the princely total of two horses up to halfway, barely half a dozen in total (in a field of sixteen) and didn’t mention the winner until after they had passed the post.

    Absolutely shocking.

Serves you right for turning up the volume, Gladders – zero sympathy.

Actually, I think the coverage from Meydan, more than most, really doesn’t need sound.

Although not needed, I rather like those graphics of the changing order of the horses throughout the race which are clearly ahead of the actual pictures as they had Broome getting up on the line before he hit the front.

The Meydan coverage is rubbish because they cannot mention betting. I know it is not the be all and end all but racing coverage without betting has lost an important angle.

That is Larry Collmus, who is based in USA and called many Triple Crown races for NBC. This is his first time to call a race run on the straight.

Originally, Alistair Cohen from South Africa called all Dubai races this year. But Alistair cut his contract short due to some arguments with Emirates Racing Authority.

Thanks, Patrick. If that commentary is typical of Mr Collmus’ output, it’s a miracle he’s lasted this long.

I think this race makes Larry’s name.

Never commentated on a straight course before but he is asked to make his debut in a big field sprint on one of the most high profile international race days of the year.

By straight race, i sort of meant it weren’t a 5 furlong jobie at a local course. Where the nice touch plaudits are made.

Like the Haggis job today in Ireland..only noticed that last minute..phew..

Out of his depth. They should have sent for Simon Holt.

Collmus usually is pretty good apart from his tendency to get overly shouty when calling finishes. He calls a 20-horse field in the Kentucky Derby every year so 16 shouldn’t have been an issue. Not sure why he was so off his game with this race.

Maybe it’s because it’s a handful-of-times-a-year novelty for me, but the USA Triple Crown races and the Breeders’ Cup are the only occasions when I unmute as the stalls are about to open.

I find the USA race commentators so much more theatrical and listenable to than their UK counterparts generally.

It’s probably a bit of a Runyonesque thing.

Gladders you want to be at Newmarket on Open Day weekend when they let hapoy amateur jockeys and trainers call the horses home in the first five races. You need your best race reading skills to work out who is leading in the first 2 furlongs. Collmus would have been a godsend that day. :good: Jac
