Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!May 3, 2021 at 16:08 #1539632I thought he rode a shocker in the Leger. Not so much at the weekend.

May 6, 2021 at 14:42 #1539847Pyledriver’s big frame certainly suggests he should be a better four year old, however it is also possible temperament is going to hold him back.
Do think Dwyer rode a poor race – or rather a “poor straight” – in the St Leger. Pyledriver can pull and did the correct thing early, getting him settled the best he could hope for by finding a hold up position on the rail. But the horse was/is known to wander both ways and particularly left handed. Therefore, although Pyledriver’s frame probably gives him a long stride usually best in the clear rather than in behind horses – imo should have gone for a posi’ in the centre of the pack. Keeping on the edge of the field was admittedly made worse by Jim Crowley on Hukum pushing Dwyer out still further – even more out on his own. When putting Pyledriver under pressure there was nothing to his left and yet Dwyer probably made things worse by using the whip in his right hand. Yes, the horse has been known to wander towards the whip but that is not his usual way. Subsequently wandering badly, Dwyer also using the whip longer in that hand than he should’ve done. Pretty much isolated, Pyledriver then appeared to “stay on”, although that was probably more to do with yet another one of Frankie’s tenderly handled 4th placed efforts on a fancied racehorse. At least Dwyer got placed for Pyledriver’s each way backers!
In the Jockey Club Cup Pyledriver came out of the stalls first, much faster than Dwyer wanted – in all probability not the jockey’s fault. Again rightly allowed Sir John to go passed, getting the best early position he could (for this horse) on the rail with something in front and… For a horse that mostly drifts left – good having another horse on his left. Only thing I can criticise Dwyer for is his first use of the whip being with the right hand. Pyledriver most likely to wander away from his rivals and away from the whip. The horse just doing what was expected.
Is Martin Dwyer much more adept with the whip in his right hand?

Pricker may well be a better idea than changing jockey. Or… A few horses go better without the whip.

Value Is EverythingJune 4, 2021 at 15:28 #1543507Excellent ride, crucial point today was getting the big fella settled better than previously – those at home in Lambourn deserve a great deal of credit for that. Then with a horse that often hangs badly both ways (but particularly left) pushed ahead when the pace slowed in order to get the rail (important to his chance) knowing he’d be challenged alongside and the horse having nowhere to go (right or left) when put under pressure… other than forward. Ironic for the name of this thread, one of the best rides you’ll see all season.
Value Is EverythingJune 4, 2021 at 15:32 #1543510Aye, Dwyer has shut me up. Well done to him, connections, and to Pyledriver himself. Well deserved Group 1.

June 5, 2021 at 11:36 #1543790Think the ride won the race, great tactics. Getting the lead and staying to the far rail was crucial, if someone else had been leading, it’s quite possible they would have come over to the stands side and took the field with them. Doubt very much Pyledriver would have won under those circumstances.
Don’t think there was much wrong with the discussion earlier in the thread, Dwyer mentioned a change of jockey himself and stated he had considered giving up, a number of times over the years. That’s hardly the thoughts of a man riding at the top of his form and the rides mentioned earlier were open to question.
Although I think Pyledriver was flattered yesterday and will struggle to win another G1, that may not matter with one already in the bag.November 13, 2021 at 15:47 #1567423Dwyer still riding and whipping 100 yards after the line at Lingfield.. (laughing emoji)

November 13, 2021 at 15:58 #1567426I suspect that riding after the line is some sort of schooling at racecourse given that the main target is Hong Kong Vase next month.
November 13, 2021 at 16:01 #1567427That was my take on it too Patrick.

November 14, 2021 at 06:58 #1567484“Though there is plenty of middle-distance influence on the dam’s side of his pedigree, Pyledriver is a son of Harbour Watch and IMO it’s a minor miracle his optimum trip seems to be 1m4f.”
If ever a horse was suited by a drop to 1m2f, it was this horse yesterday.
