Someone who was watching near where Celebre D’Allen collapsed said to me it seemed to take a long time to get water to him so maybe a number of water stations around the course is something that could be looked at. At least that would be proactive without affecting the race itself.
January 16, 2025 at 21:01 in reply to: Ludlow abandons 30 Minutes after Scheduled First Race #1718110I was at Ludlow today and it was extremely frustrating. They probably should have called it off earlier as the jockeys were adamant that it wasn’t safe, particularly on the bends, but they hung on hoping things would improve.
The annoying thing was that, just 30 minutes from the course, the temperature was 9 degrees which would have made it perfectly raceable but that warmer air just never made it to the track.
I was at the Cumberland Farmers point to point when A Kinsman won the second division of the Maiden. The first division had been won by Earls Brig who went on to be placed in the King George and the Gold Cup!
June 14, 2023 at 14:13 in reply to: Evening meetings at Goodwood and Fontwell Park on Friday #1651459We may not be happy about the prices CAS but, apparently, Aintree is sold out on Friday night. Difficult to argue with the economics if it sells out at those prices.
Can’t go wrong on the hill at Bangor. £12 per head and picnics welcome.
The explanation is quite simple. The BHA said they wanted suggestions to get more people to go racing. A rich owner said the answer was to give more money to rich owners. The BHA said that was a great idea and went with it.
Ok so you are an occasional or new racegoer fancying a Saturday afternoon at the races. So where are you going to go – your local track or a Premier meeting with all the best horses 100 miles away? Well you don’t know one horse from another so why drive all those extra miles. The local track it is then. But wait. Their meeting now starts too early or the last race is too late for the kid’s bedtime.
Off to the pub beer garden it is then.
Tomorrow I am meeting my mate for lunch, we are going to Walton Vale for a few pints and then, instead of going to the course, we are watching it on the tele. Never used to miss a meeting at Aintree. Now I refuse to pay the prices they want for the summer jumping meetings in May and June.
At the risk of aftertiming, that is why I didn’t want him to take a break before Wedndesday!
Rumours online that Run Wild Fred is out for the season so might be worth checking.
Hopefully he doesn’t take a break before Wednesday.
Don’t know about any plans but Billy is a great lad and I am delighted things are going well for him.
June 9, 2022 at 23:00 in reply to: Are delayed Uttoxeter trying to squeeze one more race in to trigger the…. #160143390% of the Uttoxeter crowd will have been there tonight for the after-race DJ so as long as that went ahead and the bars stayed open they wouldn’t care about the abandoned races.
Big crowd at Bangor today.
Though there is a bigger crowd on the Friday they nearly all go down to the bottom end where the music and bars are so it is actually quieter around the paddock on Friday than it is on Thursday when there is more of a racing crowd in attendance.
No its simply betraying the memory of the 97.
On Racing TV website today :
Injury meant Elegant Escape spent last season on the sidelines but the Grade Two winning chaser is ready to return to the track this season where an outing in the Randox Grand National at Aintree is the primary aim.
He said: “We missed him last season as he had a leg injury so it is nice to have him back in training as he has taken us to some big days.
“His main target is the Grand National and we are going to run him in the Becher Chase in December. We might give him a spin over hurdles in the middle of November before the Becher Chase, where we will see if he takes to the fences.
“He is a Welsh Grand National winner and has been sixth in a Gold Cup and has been placed in the Ladbrokes Trophy twice so he is a fair horse.”
The definitive history of Aintree is Aintree : the History of the Racecouse by John Pinfold. All the various configurations of the GN course are described in detail.
