A few years ago, I wrote on here about the quality of racing coverage in the daily papers. Results were mixed (to say the least!) but I found The Star best for midweeks and The Sun best on Saturdays. I thought I’d try The Sun (95p) again to see if it had maintained it’s standards.

The Saturday coverage comes via a 12-page pullout called ‘Favourite’. The cover was NT-D mocked up as a green Yoda (‘Mai the fourth’ etc regarding Bristol De Mai) which is utterly ridiculous but quite funny, with a short report on Dan Skelton’s thousandth winner. Pages 2-3 are entirely text with decent-length columns from Matt Chapman, Harry Skelton & Bryony Frost and a long report on Kim Bailey & Imperial Aura as the headline tip.

The rest of the pullout is mainly racecards. All big/ITV races are covered in considerable depth with single-line ‘Spotlights’, racing colours and a brief form guide. There is a well-written ‘Verdict’ at the bottom of those races that is in greater depth than the Racing Post’s. The lesser meetings and races are covered in more basic detail but with decent clarity. There are a number of ‘pointers’ for each meeting such as trainers in form, headgear first-time, wind-ops, travellers etc. At the back, there are cards for Sunday, some football betting and another tipping piece. There’s also a decent column by Jack Keane (?) with a couple of racing interest stories.

The photography is well done and colours and layout for all of this – particularly the racecards – is nigh-on perfect. I have to say that the whole thing looks and feels great.

All sports journalism, particularly in the red-tops, has been flattened in the last 20 years by the behemoth that is football, so whatever one’s opinion of these papers, I do think it’s very important for racing to have this media ‘reach’. I was very impressed by The Sun’s output here – it’s giving racing far better and higher-quality coverage than most media outputs and it’s continued support of the game is vital.

It’s good to see that they’re making such an effort… but it’s still The Sun.

Take out the racing pullout section, use the rest for bog roll. Job done!

Isn’t admitting to buying The Sun (no matter how good its racing coverage) the Top Gear equivalent of confessing to driving a Lada?

Well said Nenni. I wouldn’t even pick it up on the train, let alone pay good money for it.

I think I can back that up.
I cannot be 100% sure but
    certainly on the balance of
    probabilities..I don’t think
    Nathan has bought the Sun
    for over 20 years – it’s a
    Rip Van Winkle statement
    if ever I saw one.

They could print the names of the winners and I still wouldn’t buy it.

The Sun is class on a Saturday, and great value.  Hillsborough was 32 years ago and the people associated with the disgraceful Sun stories in those days are long gone.

Doesn’t matter how long ago Hillsborough was

we are always told to “educate” yourself on matters of history, racism, sexism, homophobia etc

I’ve told Matt Chapman he is better than working for this rag

Even when they print the truth they do it such a way to **** up peoples lives, Ben Stokes story and poor Caroline Flack two off the top of my head

Must say it is a bit like Labour and the Tories holding each other responsible for what their parties did 50 years ago.

Doubt there is a single person from the Hillsborough days still on the paper.

I don’t buy it because of Hillsborough – I don’t buy it because it’s The Sun!

Very few newsagents in Liverpool even stock “The Sun”, so widely is the paper disliked.

Although I often thought it was a little ironic to see all the satellite dishes, which meant Murdoch was making plenty of money from the same people who boycotted The Sun. I am sure Sky TV when he owned it made him far more money than The Sun ever did.
