October 9, 2021 at 23:39 #1562892We had a poster here (can’t remember their name) who thought that Elegant Escape was the second coming of Arkle.
The weight of expectation must’ve finally got to the poor beast.
October 9, 2021 at 23:40 #1562893Glad that man would be potato ….I think he’s had his chips now and moved on to another forum

October 9, 2021 at 23:42 #1562894Ah yes, Potato. What an odd fellow.
Thanks, HDLG! 👍
October 9, 2021 at 23:50 #1562896I’ve wondered similarly vf. The Tizzard stable don’t always seem to be the most communicative about their big names e.g. I don’t recall Fox Norton’s retirement being announced (though he has a non-racing agreement), or any further news about Sizing Tennessee after he picked up a leg injury after beating Elegant Escape in the Ladbrokes Trophy.
We’re getting to the time of year where lots of “Stable Tour” articles get published, so hopefully there might be some news on Elegant Escape soon.
October 10, 2021 at 12:59 #1562941On Racing TV website today :
Injury meant Elegant Escape spent last season on the sidelines but the Grade Two winning chaser is ready to return to the track this season where an outing in the Randox Grand National at Aintree is the primary aim.
He said: “We missed him last season as he had a leg injury so it is nice to have him back in training as he has taken us to some big days.
“His main target is the Grand National and we are going to run him in the Becher Chase in December. We might give him a spin over hurdles in the middle of November before the Becher Chase, where we will see if he takes to the fences.
“He is a Welsh Grand National winner and has been sixth in a Gold Cup and has been placed in the Ladbrokes Trophy twice so he is a fair horse.”
October 10, 2021 at 13:07 #1562943Native River was one of the best jumpers in the country and didn’t get a run in the Grand National. Now, one of the worst jumpers in the yard is to run in both Becher and Grand National.
Value Is EverythingOctober 10, 2021 at 13:10 #1562944Potato has / had a reincarnation as Captain Robbo in TRF’s General Sports section.
Value Is EverythingOctober 10, 2021 at 15:43 #1562960Thanks Nenni, that is good to hear he will be back. Some great timing by Racing TV there too

Gingertipster, calling Elegant Escape one of the worst jumpers in the yard seems very harsh to me! He’s never fallen or unseated.

The owners forbade it, I think.
I thought potato had kidnapped EE to keep in a golden stable being fed sugarlumps and having his hooves kissed every day.
October 10, 2021 at 16:41 #1562968You don’t need to be the best of jumpers to win the National these days never mind just run in it.
October 10, 2021 at 16:44 #1562969Thanks for the update nenni

Yes greenasgrass the owners of native river do not like the grand national

Love it. I do rather miss potato’s crazed ramblings though I must admit
October 10, 2021 at 18:49 #1562982I’ve mentioned numerous times the sadness at never seeing Native in the National , at 12 he,s going to struggle in graded races , I wonder if they,ll go for the Welsh ?, to be honest I’d much rather the old boy was going for retirement , the only horse I’ve never lost a penny on though it’s been more e.w over the last couple of years

Depends how you judge a poor jumper, Marlingford.
Hardly a race went by without Elegant Escape making serious errors (and mistakes prevent winning opportunities). So – for me – it is just as bad as falling. When assessing a race, I’d much rather see a bold jumping horse who might occasionally fall but otherwise its jumping is an asset that usually helps get winning opportunities… Rather than one that makes a lot of mistakes that lessen winning opportunities.
Value Is EverythingOctober 12, 2021 at 20:45 #1563141I don’t disagree with the principle of what you’ve said Ginger, though I’m sure there will be a general correlation between lack of jumping ability and the number of falls/unseats.
Looking at the Racing Post comments on Elegant Escape’s races, some do indeed describe jumping errors, but others don’t. He’s got round incident-free and performed well in big, competitive fields. Clearly he is not the best jumper ever, but I’m not convinced poor jumping ability has particularly held him back. Also jumping ability seems to have less bearing at Aintree nowadays as others have said.
So I guess I’m saying I still think you are being harsh, but thank you for replying. Of course I have probably now doomed him to a first fence fall in the Becher!
October 12, 2021 at 22:08 #1563146I think he,s ground dependent and really likes getting his hoof in , he’s won a Welsh and I suspect that may well be the plan again this season
