“Two years ago I bought a couple of beanie hats with lights, one for me and one for Mike.”
Has Mike cashed his in yet? 🤔

April 20, 2026 at 13:34 #1764348I first came into flat caps when coming up with a uniform for a morris dancing side I had recently helped form. The person who suggested it was a big peaky blinders fan and I imagine that swayed his judgement. I’d never worn one before, but once I’d got one I found that I quite liked it and crucially so did my (now) wife. I have a ridiculously big head (with lots of hollow space) so for a hat to suit me and for my wife to agree was a bit of a miracle.
My dad bought me another one a couple months later as “an alternative by way of change”… I don’t think he was keen on my original choice.
I’ve worn it to the races ever since.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.-------------------------------------------------------

April 21, 2026 at 16:54 #1764461I have seen Peaky Blinders. It was pretty good in the earlier days but lost its way towards the end. I have no desire to see the recently released film.
One of the earlier episodes was set at the Derby but I don’t know if the Peaky Blinders inspired flat cap at the races trend was already in full swing or if that started it off.
Never worn one myself, I prefer the practical warmth of the beanie although admittedly it is far from stylish.

I have an aversion to large horses
They take up far too much of the bedMay 2, 2026 at 20:56 #1765763Personally, I think the general decline of Britain is overwhelmingly due to the failure of gentlemen to wear hats. As mother always said, “if you want to get ahead, get a hat ”
May 2, 2026 at 21:09 #1765764Apologies to your mother, but she was wrong: if you want to precipitate hair loss, and look a twat in the process, get a hat.
😜
May 3, 2026 at 07:56 #1765803No need to apologise – but as she would have told you, she was never wrong :) But I can see you are clearly not a fan of headgear

That was the (very good) advertising slogan of hatters Dunn & Co
What about sunhats?
With the British summer becoming increasingly mediterranean these are really a necessity rather than a sartorial statement.
I’ve a rather frayed Panama bought many years ago from Snooks of Bridport which I wear when gardening or out walking when the sun is beating down. Surprisingly effective at keeping you cool and for preventing sunburn.
Also helps prevent cataracts for those like me who find that sunglasses detract from enjoyment of the big, bright, beautiful natural world.
June 2, 2026 at 04:37 #1767737I very much liked horses as a boy but liked chickens better. They were chirpy as chips and ran just as fast and I remember one very brown chicken with a very red hanging thing, or was it stuck on its head ? Anyway,I liked it better than all the rest of the funny footed gang I got to know on the farm in that extremely hot summer of 48 that reached a 100 degrees That bird had a certain cluckety cluckety cluck sort of cleverness about it that put it in a different class to all the other lazy dumb fookers on benefits – the egg layers.
They told me I was a late developer but I don’t use that as an excuse, and it’s’s a great disappointment to me personally, and my dear feathered friends, that I have spent the vast majority of my adult life eating them, often on a day of rest.
I will endeavour to make amends for my sinning ways, to spend the remainder of my adult years contrite and in penance – just eating boiled.

August 29, 2026 at 16:01 #1774581Eve Johnson Houghton was interviewed today after Zavateri’s win. She wore a flat cap. It didn’t suit her. Magically, in a Gandalf kind of way, it made her look like Sir Ian McKellen.
August 29, 2026 at 16:08 #1774583“It didn’t suit her.”
Does it suit anyone? 🤔
August 29, 2026 at 17:02 #1774585Maybe a very beautiful woman but then … erm … err … DOH!
