"We think he’s gone over the top for the season, but we’ve paid the entry fee, so he might as well run"
To hear some people talk we should all draw stumps and go and have tea when it rains rather than run important flat races.
This is the opening paragraph of an excellent article on Dingle races which appeared two years ago in Cara, the Aer Lingus in-flight magazine.
The words flow at staccato pace from Dingle Tom, the legendary voice of the Dingle Races. "Rising Tide moving well in the middle; Need For Speed will need more speed; Happy Gilmore not looking happy. They’re approaching the Wooorld Faaamous Beenbane cornerrrr!!!" The crowd responds with a roar, partially for the horses, partially for Tom.
I’ve been to a few flapping meetings over the years in Connemara, at Oughterard, Omey and Clifden. The cards will typically include a premier open race, worth about €2,000, a couple of pony races and at least one race restricted to locally owned and bred horses. Entertainment is guaranteed.
Thanks for the link, Gareth, my remarks are out of date.
Gareth, the times at The Curragh or Leopardstown are timed to hundredths of a second and are announced on course in this format. Beware, however, because the second decimal gets chopped off when the time is published on irish-racing.com and elsewhere, and without any rounding being applied.
For example, if a sprinter runs 59.11 seconds the time will be published as 59.1 seconds. No problem there, but if it had run 59.19 seconds that time also would be published as 59.1.
The Aran Concerto?
At Ascot they could turn the tunnel under the grandstand into a Monaco Grand Prix-style feature by starting and finishing races in the parade ring. This would add some spice and mystery to the racing while hardly making it any less visible than it already is.

This is the question that launched the thread. Sea Pigeon’s flat race successes are indeed irrelevant!
Move the Grand National and its fences to Chester. The public could then bet on how many runners get lapped.
It has to be Monksfield, of course. I was even named after him.
I can forgive people voting for Night Nurse but I’m scandalised that Sea Pigeon has more votes than Monksfield. The latter beat him fair and square when both horses were in their prime. Excuses about the trip and references to the Chester Cup are irrelevant.
By the way, while Monksfield was getting 6 lbs from Night Nurse in that famous race at Liverpool he was not yet in his prime. That came over the following two years.
There are one or two commentators who irritate me but that is down to personal taste. Most of them do a decent job. The very good ones help you to see things in a race you might not spot for yourself.

It was great to see a top class horse come back like that.
But I wouldn’t call it the performance of the season. Ashley Brook was a candidate to bounce, and probably did. He also showed too much fizz and set off too fast.
Well Chief also got tired near the finish, as he was entitled to do, and all going well should be able to produce more at Cheltenham.
Thanks for taking the trouble to answer a half wit, Wit.
I’ve just gone and had another look at the Totesport site. I’ve an account with them and as far as I could see they offered the same services as any other bookie. I would go in and click on the Horse Racing button and be introduced to the usual sort of screens.
Now I see they also have a totepool button as well.

Is there legislation preventing the Tote from offering pool betting on the internet?
