the times in Ireland can be desperately unreliable
——————————————————————————–
Really? I reckon they’re pretty good (at the major tracks, anyway) – http://www.irish-racing.com now even carry times for all finishers so you don’t have to rely on the beaten distances.
Thanks for that, Gareth.
Things must have changed recently, because I’m sure that sort of accuracy did not exist only two or three years back. At the major tracks anyway.
May 29, 2007 at 23:20 #62246Thanks for the link, Gareth, my remarks are out of date.
May 30, 2007 at 07:42 #62247Gareth, do they have Standard Times on that site?
May 30, 2007 at 08:59 #62248Fraid not Maurice.
May 30, 2007 at 10:09 #62249Gareth – can you confirm that all Irish courses now use electronic timing, because this was not always the case, as this article here states
May 30, 2007 at 11:49 #62250I can’t – although I might know someone who can find out. I’ll let you know.
May 30, 2007 at 14:55 #62251I have been involved with irish racing since 1950 as a punter and later as an owner and I can categorically state that I have never heard a trainer or an owner talk about timing. Jockeys get instructions to race in a certain manner unlike the US where they are instructed to ride to certain fractions or quarter times. Most of the tracks are up hill and down dale where timing is not relevant. To focus on times instead of toilets is to do the punter a disservice!
May 30, 2007 at 15:08 #62252I’m told that, currently, all races started from stalls are electrically timed.
andyod – it’s surely not that difficult or even expensive to provide decent toilets and accurate race times!
May 30, 2007 at 15:18 #62253Gareth
Next time you are at Gowran Park try getting the official going. They don’t have any!
Going has a serious effect on timing. If there is no official going how can there be official timing?
May 30, 2007 at 15:33 #62254earning the third big speed rating from me in three weeks.
Mmmm
May 30, 2007 at 18:59 #62255I LOL-ed at that, TDK, and was just about to post congratulating you on an excellent piece of satire when it occurred to me that it could be true. And it is. :o
