More pertinent might be the gap between the two runs – vast majority of Arkle winners had race in the calendar year.

It’s one thing horses not fulfilling their potential – every trainer experiences this – but the injury scares for Henderson’s star horses, often before a big race or Cheltenham, far exceed what I can recall for Mullins or Nicholls. The Binocular farce was extraordinary. And the will he / won’t he sagas about putting a horse up in trip.
He had I Am Maximus finish fourth in the Ballymore. Switched to Mullins and 13 months later is winning an Irish National.
Henderson has horses like this and yet they fail to progress as handicap chasers. Saturday after Saturday there’s a valuable handicap chase without a Seven Barrows runner in sight.Handicap Chase winners last five years = 59

His tail goes up for a couple of flights and his stride shortens when they stack up a bit going down the back but I’d expect to see sketchy jumping if he’d done something that far back.

However.- Sir Gino is a brilliant horse over hurdles or fences and has an owner with a multitude of options for similar races, so in this specific case I can see nothing untoward that might have caused today’s horrible incident
I don’t care if Sir Gino races again but I care very much about him returning to his yard and groom. Fondmort suffered a pelvic injured which caused life threatening complications elsewhere and they saved him.
( If you’re blaming the injury on the horse being held up then you should quit the sport now )
I’m wondering if IET suffered an injury at the fence before the fall. Overreach and then didn’t look comfortable when out under pressure coming round the home turn – head went left and then he hung right and basically didn’t want to jump that last fence
Moscow Flyer fell at Leopardstown six weeks before winning the Arkle and I think I’d still have IET for the Champion Chase, provided positive news comes to light
